Femme Fleur

1980

About the Item

Femme Fleur / Woman Flower Femme Fleur is a powerful depiction of love in its awakening, cast in bronze with a black patina in an edition of only 8 (this edition: 3/8) by the prestigious Fonderie de Coubertin. Conceived in 1980. Signed “Gudmar” with foundry stamp “FdC.” Certificate of authenticity issued by the sculptor’s family estate. After three decades of exploring classical features and poses with a distinct modern look, Gudmar Olovson experiments further in the spirit of Degas and Rodin. In the very early 1980s, after a loving and stormy marriage, he meets younger Parisian socialite Monique, of a hotel-owning family, and the romance lasts over 10 years. It is passionate and pushes the sculptor forward on his creative path. This beautiful small bronze symbolizes spring, hope, and the renaissance of love. Gudmar Olovson drew inspiration from Rodin’s “Iris Messenger of the Gods” and Degas’s “Dancers” while creating a fully new plastic interpretation. About Gudmar Olovson One of Europe’s most prominent “free” figurative sculptors of the late 20th century, Gudmar Olovson (1936-2017) studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in Stockholm and worked in Paris from 1959, inspired mainly by Rodin, Maillol, Carpeaux, and Degas. He is known for his sculpted portraits of numerous celebrities (Ingrid Bergman, HRH King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, Pope John Paul II, French presidents Charles de Gaulle & Georges Pompidou, HRH Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, Philippe de Rothschild, and many industry grandees). His main achievements were nevertheless his odes to love and the human body through small and monumental bronzes today visible in numerous private collections and sculpture parks. In 2008, a museum honoring Gudmar Olovson’s work was opened in Falsterbo, Sweden (Falsterbonäsets Open Air Museum, Höllviken, with 5 monumental bronzes). The “Jardin de l’Amour / Garden of Love” featuring 6 monumental bronzes celebrating love, beauty and family, was inaugurated posthumously at the 17th-century Château de Cheverny in the French Loire Valley in 2019.
