Divided Column Sculpture of Birch by Robert Adams, 1952

Sculpted in the year of the 'Geometry of Fear' exhibition at the Venice Biennale's British Pavilion. The Tate's 1950s sketchbook shows ideas that resemble the form, Adams' creativity in full flow after a year of travelling to Paris, Dublin and St Ives. Adams was likely living with his new wife at Primrose House, Roehampton when he sculpted this.
This was one of three Divided Columns in Adams' solo exhibition at Gimpel Fils in spring 1953, the other two sculptures carved from holly (Grieve 143; exhibited XXXI Venice Biennale, 1962) and an African wood (G 144; exhibited 'Nine Abstract Artists', Redfern, 1955). All refer back to the two 1951 sculptures in oak and lignum-vitae, both Divided Column, 2 Parts (G 125 and 126). In each, a tall cylinder is vertically split and pierced by a hole, perhaps a residual eye or mouth, the upper part being on a round base with a thin collar at the core. The sculptures can be read as a head and neck, though from 1949 Adams had reduced the representational links in his work.
Alongside London gallery exhibitions, Adams also participated in a number of privately organised shows at the studio of artist Adrian Heath. In 1953, Heath held three exhibitions of Constructivist abstract art, in which Adams was the only sculptor showing alongside the core group of painters, Victor Pasmore, Kenneth and Mary Martin, and Heath. Other artists who exhibited included William Scott, Terry Frost, Eduardo Paolozzi, Ben Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth.
Robert Adams was an English sculptor and painter, associated with the 'Geometry of Fear' group.
During the Second World War, Adams worked for the Civil Defence and took evening classes in sculpture at the Northampton School of Art, where he was born and had studied since the early 30s. After the War, he spent two years teaching himself to sculpt in wood and, though he also produced abstract paintings, Adams soon began to concentrate his efforts on sculpting. The forms he produced were abstracted yet inspired by natural objects and were created from simple materials such as wood, plaster and stone.
Towards the end of the 1940s, Adams began to work with metal. He learned how to weld while teaching at the Central School of Art and Design, London, and began to produce constructions from sheet and rod elements in 1955. The welded steel artworks became the focus of his work in the '60s, after critical praise on the pieces he exhibited at the 26th Venice Biennale.
Adams met Victor Pasmore in the late 40s and was quickly brought into his close circle of artist-friends, including Adrian Heath, Anthony Hill, Kenneth Martin and Mary Martin. Adams exhibited alongside this group from 1951 to 1956, at the Redfern Gallery, Gimpel Fils (where his first solo show was held in 1947) and other spaces London, during which time they acted as the main forum for Constructivist ideas in Britain. The group specifically aimed to build a closer relationship between art and architecture and a reflection of Adams' sympathy for the cause can be seen in his vast mural reliefs of the 50s, such as those covering the reinforced concrete facades of the Municipal Theatre at Gelsenkirchen, Germany (1959).
Adams found international reknown and exhibited with Galerie Jeanne Bucher, Paris, in 1949 and the Passedoit Gallery, New York, in 1950. He was also awarded with the Rockerfeller Award in 1950 along with commissions by the Arts Council for the Festival Year, artworks which were later loaned to the Tate. Adams also won a prize for his lithography at the Sao Paulo Biennale, Brazil, in 1951. In the 50s he also taught at the Central School of Arts and Crafts.
From the 1970s until his death in 1984, Adams moved his focus on to bronze casting. His large-scale public works from this period include the large steel sculpture for Kingswell, Hampstead (1973), designed as a simple, Minimalist monolith.
Adams' work is in many public and corporate collections including Deutsche Bank.

Vintage Jerusalem Sculpture Wall Plaque 1930's Palestine Israeli Bezalel School
Located in Surfside, FL

Jerusalem's Bezalel School
The Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, was founded in 1906 by Boris Schatz. In 1903, Schatz met Theodore Herzl and became an ardent Zionist. At the Zionist Congress of 1905, he proposed the idea of an art school in the Yishuv (early Jewish settlements), and in 1906 he moved to Israel and founded the Bezalel School of Art in Jerusalem. Bezalel, which was a school for crafts as well as for graphic art, became successful very rapidly. Schatz’s vision was to develop useful arts and crafts among Palestinian Jews, thereby decreasing the dependence on charity. At the same time, he sought to inspire his students to create a Jewish national style of the arts, in order to promote the Zionist endeavor. The inhabitants of 19th-century Palestine, both Jewish and non-Jewish, had produced mostly folk art, ritual objects and olive-wood and shell-work souvenirs, as well as oil painting, sculpture, tapestry and mosaics. So the founding of Bezalel provided a professional and ideological framework for the arts and crafts in Jerusalem. The school employed workers and students, of whom there were 450 in 1913, in manufacturing, chiefly for export, decorative articles ranging from cane furniture, inlaid frames and ivory and wood carvings, to damascene and silver filigree and repousse work.
A major part of Schatz’s school was the workshops, which, starting with rug-making and silversmithing, eventually offered 30 different crafts. Workshops included the "Menorah" workshop where they designed relief and souvenirs made of terra-Cotta, and the Sharar, Stanetsky and Alfred Salzmann workshops where Menorah lamps...
