About the Item
"Deviation" Gyöngy Laky, apple, acrylic paint, screws, 30" x 60" x 2.5" (installed), 2020.
This contemporary mixed media wall sculpture was done by San Francisco-based artist, Gyöngy Laky (b. 1944, Hungary). Laky is known for her sculptural vessels, typographical wall sculptures, and site-specific outdoor works composed of materials harvested from nature. Laky explains the origins of "Deviation":
"With letters functioning like diacritical marks, the name could be 'Oh, Why?' I Intended to make the universally understood, affirmative and responsive OK. As the O progressed in my studio, where I listen often to news, I kept hearing that things are not OK in a number of alarming ways. 'OY' lurked in the back of my ,mind. This diaspora tic word conveys a myriad of subtle emotions and responses whether whispered or shouted. It functions somewhat like a symbol or sign. Its visual form is a quick read and its sound is instantly understood. The symbolic life force of letters, and the words that they make, can have multiple and varied meanings depending on their role in any given situation. OY’s physicality and meaning gives voice to my current concerns. 'If we can turn OY around, we’ve got YO, which stands for good luck (it is 11 on a craps table, and the only number that always wins),' Alan Davis, an art collector, commented during a visit to my studio. 'Let’s see if 2020 is the year we help turn OY to YO.' " - Gyöngy Laky
