This Charred white oak mushroom acts as a stool or end table.
“There’s no color in my work,” says Shlafer, “I either burn it, bleach it, or leave it alone.” Shlafer’s sculptures are designed with rudimentary material such as pine, oak, and spruce salvaged as driftwood on the Eastern end of Long Island. The artist started this body of work during the pandemic after he stumbled upon the charming discoveries while traveling on foot by the coastline. Always a wayfarer at heart, he drew inspiration from his youth of traveling on a motorcycle through Southern Africa and seeing indigenous art made from ordinary earth objects within local villages.
“Wishbone 1” a 5 Foot sculpture, charred white oak with a tinted aqua resin base that reflects an omen of resilience and hardiness in light of the hardships of the past pandemic year, In another “Tune” a bleached spruce fence post narrowed into a tuning fork shape with a slate base. It welcomes a ceremonial vibe. “At the end of the day, that’s the energy we all crave,” says Shlafer, “who doesn’t respond to that?”

Anne Andersson was born in Gothenburg, Sweden, with a great desire to explore Nature and a Passion for Art. She received a degree in science in 1981 from Kjällbergska University in Gothenburg and a degree in Art from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. She now works from her studio in St. Petersburg, Florida as a Sculptor, illustrator and painter. Her work calls to mind the animalia artworks of Henri Maik and Gustavo Novoa.
Anne Andersson's artwork serves as an homage to our planet’s charismatic and rare wild animals. Inspired by the majesty and beauty of exotic wildlife, and motivated by an urge to preserve them, Anne’s astonishingly realistic life-size sculptures capture the experience of seeing these animals up close without exploiting them. Her sculpted work using natural materials and clay, provides a humane alternative to big game trophy hunting and taxidermy.
She combines her talents in painting, tapestry weaving and illustration with an intuitive attention to the smallest detail to truly bring her sculptures to life. She has created lions, tigers, leopards, jaguars, cheetahs, bobcats, lynxes, pumas, panthers, elephants, rhinos, bears, water buffalo, bison, moose, wolves, coyotes and more—but she feels closest to the big cats. Parcel gilt and patinated bronze figural statue of a Water carrier with a pitcher on her shoulder. The contrast between the deep bronze and bright gilding is incredibly striking. The woman drips in gold jewelry and drapery, wearing arm bangles, a large necklace and outrageous earrings. Beautifully casted, the piece's details are crisp and well defined, with beautiful even patinas and gilding. She stands atop an exquisitely carved, two toned, wooden base made of three sections. A fluted column with a small garland nestled within each flute makes up the main body, while a bellied band carved to mimic tufted cushions or upholstery is sandwiched between the column and a black hexagonal ped.
Attributed to the Graux-Marly Foundry. Based at 8 rue du Parc-Royal in Paris in 1860, started by Jules Graux-Marly and continued by his sons into the later 19th Century. The firm exhibited at the 1878 Paris Exhibition and was well-respected for both their figurative sculptures and decorative ornaments.
