About the Item
A sculpture made using Bronze in a bold and significant way.
With a background in architecture, interior and furniture design I am a self-taught sculptor and specialise in sandcasting to make pieces which engage the quality of bronze as a noble material in its own right.
Sculptures are intimate in scale and intended for the interiors of home, office or hotel.
Casting in sand moulds is a simple and ancient method far removed from the sophisticated lost wax operation used by most art foundries. The sand-casting process is relentless and unforgiving – the foundry is no place for a delicate original. It denies a complexity of form that imposes a disciplinary and enriching simplicity.
I cut, carve, grind or weld the cast bronze to create unique forms before invariably exposing the natural bronze or oxidising to produce the unique surface finishes that have always been an essential dimension of my work.
Bronze is eternal - yet malleable. I love the stuff. In its natural state the tone and depth of colour is sublimely beautiful, yet the surface is endlessly receptive to the transformative effects of oxidisation.

Philip Hearsey
Philip Hearsey is a British sculptor born in 1946 who lives and works in Longtown, Herefordshire, UK.
Philip has exhibited his work throughout the UK. He specializes in sand casting to make sculptures that engage the quality of bronze as a noble material in its own right. Casting in sand molds is a simple and ancient method far removed from the sophisticated lost wax operation used by most art foundries.
The sand-casting process is relentless and unforgiving — the foundry is no place for a delicate original. It denies a complexity of form that imposes a disciplinary and enriching simplicity. Color is achieved in many ways. The most common and widely used method is to oxidize or patinate the bronze by employing the same chemical reaction that occurs in nature, but using a combination of mild heat and stronger solutions to achieve a faster result. Patination can be enhanced by the application of a transparent colorwash that maintains the inimitable variegated effects that are possible with oxidization, while producing a more vivid finish. The most usual colorwash is acrylic, but oil-bound washes or colored waxes are sometimes used. Coloring can also be achieved by painting alone and often this technique is utilized on part of a sculpture in combination with patination. Painting allows a greater range of colors than patination alone. All coloring is finished and protected by a marine grade lacquer and/or wax.

Pisapia's "Expedition Series," inspired by sea voyages, is about meeting life’s challenges with courage and purpose. It connects to the idea expressed by J.W. Goethe: “Character is formed in the stormy billows of the world.” Taking up life’s tasks can require one to go against the wind. The feeling of determination to achieve and continue steering through obstacles is poured into the pure forms; a dynamic balancing of the straight and curve on different axes. "With a rounded starting point," Pisapia explains, "I add on a variety of disparate angles, diverse curves, and twisting planes. I carve and smooth the surfaces, bringing out particular tensions and transitions."
Flavius Valone Pisapia is an Italian-Romanian artist born in Bucharest in 1981. He completed his higher education in the UK, with an MA in Transpersonal Arts & Therapy, 2014; a Diploma in Transformative Arts, 2011; and a BA (Hons) in Film and Video, 2005. Pisapia studied sculpture throughout his higher education and appreciated several sculptor mentors in the UK. Since 2016, he has resided in India, where he is currently an artist in residence at Studio Sukriti in Jaipur. He has had several solo exhibitions in India and his artwork is found in private collections worldwide.

Through an immersive process the essence, beauty and the pure form of an idea are gradually revealed to me. The emerging awareness flows into my artwork imbuing it with a higher reality.
