About the Item

Artist Commentary: The tree sculptures in this series are limited by the 4’ x 8’ size of the plywood and by the simple notched connection that joins each piece. They are made from plywood, a material that is somewhere between natural object and artificial product. The sculpture is both an image of a tree, and an obviously constructed form. The design is based on “knock down” furniture that is sold disassembled and packed flat to be assembled by the buyer. I have used this same idea in order to make large objects that can be disassembled for storage and transportation. This series also functions like a kit, or traveling theater set; the pieces can travel anywhere and, once assembled, transform the site around them. Keywords: nature, material, gestural, silhouette Piece Details: Hand-made, original sculpture. Created in California, USA. Tung-oil finish. Artist Biography: I make sculptural installations, paintings and works on paper that explore my sense of awe in the natural world, and my fear and sadness about its destruction. I’m interested in reminding viewers of the emotional and psychological impact of encountering something bigger than ourselves. This feels especially important as more of our encounters with the world are experienced through a screen, and as the effects of climate change become more of a reality. In many of my works I attempt to imitate the perfection and overwhelming qualities of nature, while I’m also acknowledging how absurd that imitation is. I’m obsessive about learning different materials and techniques from art and craft, as well as other fields like theater, and furniture design, and each new project has required me to learn something new. I think that this level of obsession comes through in the work and adds to the feeling of awe that I’m working towards.
