Contemporary Art

CONTEMPORARY STYLE

Used to refer to a time rather than an aesthetic, Contemporary art generally describes pieces created after 1970 or being made by living artists anywhere in the world. This immediacy means it encompasses art responding to the present moment through diverse subjects, media and themes. Contemporary painting, sculpture, photography, performance, digital art, video and more frequently includes work that is attempting to reshape current ideas about what art can be, from Felix Gonzalez-Torres’s use of candy to memorialize a lover he lost to AIDS-related complications to Jenny Holzer’s ongoing “Truisms,” a Conceptual series that sees provocative messages printed on billboards, T-shirts, benches and other public places that exist outside of formal exhibitions and the conventional “white cube” of galleries.

Contemporary art has been pushing the boundaries of creative expression for years. Its disruption of the traditional concepts of art are often aiming to engage viewers in complex questions about identity, society and culture. In the latter part of the 20th century, contemporary movements included Land art, in which artists like Robert Smithson and Michael Heizer create large-scale, site-specific sculptures, installations and other works in soil and bodies of water; Sound art, with artists such as Christian Marclay and Susan Philipsz centering art on sonic experiences; and New Media art, in which mass media and digital culture inform the work of artists such as Nam June Paik and Rafaël Rozendaal.

The first decades of the 21st century have seen the growth of Contemporary African art, the revival of figurative painting, the emergence of street art and the rise of NFTs, unique digital artworks that are powered by blockchain technology.

Major Contemporary artists practicing now include Ai Weiwei, Cecily Brown, David Hockney, Yayoi Kusama, Jeff Koons, Takashi Murakami and Kara Walker.

"The Circle (Aka Dupont Circle)" Mixed Media on Canvas
Located in West Hollywood, CA
Zeal Harris is known for creating seductive, caricaturesque, political, urban-vernacular, story paintings, with a blunt mix of high-brow/low-brow elements. Her micro-narratives offer socio-political commentary about a range of larger issues that often have to do with the layered experiences of race, class, gender, and sexuality. Almost always, the work is based on contemporary real life stories or events in daily life. She is a Los Angeles based visual artist who graduated from UCLA School of Film & Television and later with a MFA in Studio Art from Otis College of Art & Design. She has been in recent exhibitions at the Port Au Prince Haiti Ghetto Biennale, the California African-American Museum, and the Caribbean Cultural Center of the African Diaspora in New York. "Something And/Or Nothing? - Triangle" - Landscape Photography - Goldsworthy
Located in Atlanta, GA
"Something And/Or Nothing? - Triangle" is an abstract photograph with hues of green, yellow, and black. Born in Philadelphia, Andrew Herzog is a multi-disciplinary artist and designer currently working in New York City. Herzog creates a variety of works that explore the relationship between the viewer and the artist with themes of accessibility and prioritized sight, often taking the form of photographs, books, films, site-specific sculptures and interactive performances, objects and drawings. Herzog defines “prioritized sight” as how we choose, consciously or unconsciously, the things we see; what we engage or empathize with; and what we understand or misinterpret, with varying degrees of implication. Herzog received an MA in Graphic Design from the Savannah College of Art and Design. He was the co-founder and partner at the design and technology studio HAWRAF, and led projects at the Google Creative Lab focusing on AI, creative tools and accessibility. Also, Herzog is adjunct professor at the School of Visual Arts in New York. Herzog has lectured and exhibited works at the A4 Art Museum, Chengdu, Sichuan, China; The Franklin Institute, Philadelphia, PA; Q21 MuseumsQuartier Wien, Vienna, Austria; and The National Museum of Art of Romania; among others. Andrew Herzog is inspired by the work of Andy Goldsworthy, Olafur Eliason, and Francis Alÿs...

The abstract composition in aqua and white of a decaying wall captures the texture of the surface of the ruin, with a strong geometric split and organic texture of plants and ivy vines. The collaborative artist team of Sasha Bezzubov and Jessica Sucher worked on this project, "The Searchers" and captured this stunning photograph prior to the location being reopened to the public.
