As a painter, he created intricate abstractions that suggested depth and dimensionality using a variety of optical illusions, with surfaces seeming to bulge out of the canvas. His works present color, form, and pattern as a single interconnected element—a concept that was critical to the foundation of the Op Art movement and the focus of his mature works. Vasarely initially studied medicine at the Budapest University in his early 20s, only to abandon his medical studies to attend to the Muhely Academy, the center of the Bauhaus movement in Budapest. While there, he was profoundly influenced by the work of color theorist and artist Josef Albers, as well as the Constructivist methods promoted by artists such as Wassily Kandinsky. While Vasarely’s earlier work was concerned more with color theory, during the 1950s and 1960s his work became more focused on the optical potential of the two-dimensional surface. He began to use complex and colorful patterns to actively engage the viewer’s eye, and to convey a sense of kinetic energy across the two-dimensional surface. Over the course of her prolific and radical career, Nancy Graves became a master of translating the primary data of soft science disciplines such as archaeology and anthropology into empirically informed, expressive works, such as "Canopic Prestidigitation." A large-scale, 23-color lithograph, Canopic Prestidigitation is as technically masterful as it is conceptually layered. Graves combines the Egyptian visual lexicon of the afterlife and allusions to European Renaissance masterworks to catalyze heuristic understandings of cross-cultural communication—Figures rendered in the hybridized profile-portrait style of Egyptian hieroglyphs float through a swirling and subtle maze of neo-classical architectural suggestions, while a disembodied hand reminiscent of Michelangelo’s "The Creation of Adam" reaches out through a frothing red portal. Richard Anuszkiewicz (American, 1930-2020) Red with Green, 1990 Silkscreen on paper Signed and dated lower right, numbered 8/20 lower left 13.75 x 14.25 inches 23.75 x 24 inches, framed Richard Anuszkiewicz was born in Erie, Pennsylvania to Polish immigrants. While at the Cleveland Institute of Art, he studied plein-air painting with Henry Hensche. After winning a Pulitzer Traveling Fellowship in 1953, Anuszkiewicz attended Yale University where he studied under Josef Albers. While at Yale he studied alongside fellow Cleveland Op artist Julian Stanczak. After receiving his M.F.A. at Yale, Anuszkiewicz went on to Kent State University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education. At just age 23, his work was exhibited at the May Show at the Cleveland Institute of Art. He was given his first solo show in March 1960 in New York. Because of his early success, Anuszkiewicz had the freedom to pursue his ideas creatively. Anuszkiewicz was one of the leading artists of the Op Art movement during the 1960s and 1970s.
