Romantic Art
ROMANTIC STYLE
In emphasizing emotion and imagination, romantic art shifted away from the restraint of classicism and neoclassicism that had dominated art in Europe since the Renaissance. Romanticism achieved its greatest popularity in art, literature, music and philosophy between 1780 and 1830, although its expression of individual experiences ranging from awe to passion informed culture in the decades after.
Landscape painting was especially popular during the romantic period, as were nature studies of wild animals and fantasies of exotic lands. Romanticism varied across Europe as it reacted to the rise of industrialization, a more personal relationship with faith that was distanced from the church and the rationalist thinking of the Enlightenment.
British painters such as John Constable and J.M.W. Turner responded dramatically to the light and atmosphere of the natural world, while William Blake conveyed humanity’s connection to the divine in his visionary art. In Germany, the late-18th-century Sturm und Drang, or Storm and Drive, movement, with its probing of the unconscious, inspired a sense of mystery in work by romantic artists such as Caspar David Friedrich and Philipp Otto Runge. In France, where the French Revolution had turned tradition upside down, Théodore Géricault and Eugène Delacroix used lush brushwork to paint monumental canvases with tumultuous scenes of nature and history.
The romantic movement and its subject matter were a significant influence on the Pre-Raphaelites, Symbolists and the American painters of the Hudson River School, as well as on other cultural movements in the 19th and 20th centuries that saw artists build on this perspective in which art was guided by emotion rather than reason.

The two canvases mounted on wooden supports are clearly attributable to Eugenio Agneni (Sutri, 1816 - Rome, 1879), a paradigmatic figure of an Italian painter of the Risorgimento years who combined a successful and continuous international artistic activity with an intense political and military activity, starting from the Roman effervescence following the election of Pius IX to the Mentana expedition and then in the early years of Rome as capital city, a period in which he held various administrative posts. The clarity of attribution of the works derives not only from the large central inscription inserted in the elaborate neo-Gothic scenic layout that encloses the two works in a diptych, but also from the direct kinship that links them to the cycle of frescoes painted between 1865 and 1868 for Marquis Antonio Maria Corsi Salviati in the reception hall of the family villa in Sesto Fiorentino. Agneni resided more or less permanently in the Florentine area between 1863 and 1871 after a phase of European-wide wanderings that began at the end of the Roman republican experience of 1849, in which he was involved to the point of having to hide for some time from July of that year at the home of Marquis Salviati, whom he therefore already knew before his subsequent move to Florence. The need to stay away from Italy, as well as his connections with Mazzinian exiles and evidently also a proven ability to reinvent himself in different cultural spheres allowed Agneni to profitably frequent the artistic scenes of London and Paris, cities in which he lived and worked, obtaining commissions of absolute importance (he decorated several rooms at Buckingham Palace, the Covent Garden Opera and the Louvre), and presenting his works at the Royal Academy in London. About the artist:
Pati Bannister was born in Highgate, England, overlooking London in 1929. Growing up, both of her parents were artists. Her mother painted watercolor landscapes, while her father painted portraits. To help further her natural talents, she took art lessons as a young girl and ultimately went to work for J. Arthur Rank, the movie maker, as an animator.
At 22 years old, she came to the United States as a governess for a family in Connecticut. Later she became a flight attendant in Florida where she met her future husband, Glynn. Little did she know, he would become the strongest influence in her life as he inspired her to pursue and share her artistic abilities with the public.
In 1958, Pati and Glynn moved to New Orleans and she started painting portraits in Jackson Square. Eventually, she opened two art galleries located in the French Quarter. In the late 1960's, they moved to the Mississippi Gulf Coast...

Much like his contemporary, John Atkinson Grimshaw, Boot appears to have been influenced by the Pether family who were renowned painters of nocturnes. He was a book illustrator as well as a renowned oil and watercolour artist, producing engravings for the London Illustrated News and Art Journal. He wrote 'Trees and How to Paint Them' in 1883.
Boot was born in Manchester. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1874 to 1884, showing mainly English and Continental landscapes. He is known to have travelled extensively in Germany, France and North Africa.
Boot was a member of the Royal Society of British Artists and of the Arts Club, who listed him as a "painter and writer on Gothic architecture". Boot also painted domestic genre and interior scenes but tended to concentrate on landscapes.
Boot lived and married in London. He is buried with his wife in Hampstead.
The subject of this painting, Kirkstall Abbey in Yorkshire, was a place Boot often visited. Three figures to the right gaze admiringly at the view, with the moonlight reflected on the path they stand on.
