Located in San Francisco, CA
Utilizing both Ottoman and European aesthetics and modes, this Besserabian flat-weave was woven in the Northeast of the country by the Black Sea either very close to or in the area now that is Moldova. Mid 19th Century Outstanding Floral Bessarabian Kilim with Light Green Border
Located in San Francisco, CA
Pile carpets and flat-weaves known in the market as 'Bessarabian' were woven mostly in the 19th century in what are now the countries of Romania, Moldova, and Ukraine—along the northwestern coastal areas of the Black Sea (in eastern Europe). Both pile and Kilim types use floral subject matter and a distinct coloration, with a dominant dark ground and accents in rose reds. This older Bessarabian flat-weave uses a red derived from imported cochineal and adds a pleasing complimentary contrasting light green border, a feature lost in later examples. Planted flower pots...

Caucasian Seichour Kuba rug
Located in San Francisco, CA
Kuba rugs designated as Seichor, are known for their distinctive vibrant palette, with prominent medium blues, scarlet reds and accents in pink and gold. Stylistically, these pieces often reflect the European and particularly French taste of the late nineteenth century and this can be seen in the almost Rococo articulation of the lattice and palmettes drawn in this rug. This piece, however, is well grounded within the weaving traditions of the Caucasus. Ultimately, it is a small, highly stylized rendition of the classical Caucasian “Dragon Carpets...

Early 20th Century Light Chinese Khotan Carpet
Located in San Francisco, CA
Khotan, an oasis city in the Xinjiang autonomous region of Western China, is situated much closer to the republics of Central Asia than Beijing. Cultural and historic ties to Central Asia give the weaving of this region its own distinct flavor, mixed with later infusions from China. This Khotan carpet from the turn of the century draws an all-over pattern reminiscent of Ming textiles of the 16th and 17th centuries. The repeat rosette ornament is a local form replacing the more typical lotus blossoms found in stricter Chinese variations, but the layout of design, including the fret pattern framing each rosette and the interlocking designs of the border, are quintessentially Chinese. Khotan weaving...

Three large and boldly articulated medallions in the style of early Kazak weavings from the Caucasus dominate the vibrant madder-red field of this historically important and masterfully executed example from eastern Anatolia. The treatment of this iconic central medallion as repeat ornament is innovative and highly successful. While exceedingly true to the spirit of drawing and its execution, the distinctive construction of this piece reveals it as the work of a particularity skillful Anatolian weaver.
