Rare Silver Pocket Sundial and Compass by Michael Butterfield, Paris, circa 1700
By Butterfield Paris
Located in Oxfordshire, United Kingdom
A beautiful, rare solid silver Anglo-French octagonal pocket sundial with compass by Michael Butterfield, circa 1700.
The sundial is made for a latitude of 44° and could be used in places in the south of France such as Avignon and elsewhere along this parallel. The elaborately engraved base plate has a Roman chapter ring on which the gnomon (a triangular flap) casts its shadow. It is signed by the maker in the following manner: Butterfield A Paris. On one side is a glazed recessed compass with a blued steel hand to position the instrument in such a way that the time can be read. The hinged triangular gnomon is richly engraved and in the shape of a bird’s head. The folding gnomon and cut corners enable the dial to be carried in the pocket.
The underside shows the latitudes of various Southern-French places in the relevant areas
Its maker Michael Butterfield was an English instrument maker who based himself in 'Le Quay de l'Horloge' of Paris from circa 1685. These types of dials, often replicated by other makers, became known as Butterfield Dials...

Small 18th Century George I Period Table Clock by Gamaliel Voyce, c.1725
Located in Oxfordshire, United Kingdom
An extremely attractive early 18th century George I period table clock of small proportions by Gamaliel Voyce, c.1725.
The proportions of the petite clock (measuring only 14 inches (36cm) with the handle up) are such that is difficult not to fall in love with it. The timepiece has a five knopped and finely finned pillar gut-fusee movement with verge escapement and a short knife-edge suspended pendulum. It has a pull quarter repeat on two vertically positioned bells indicating the hours on the larger bell followed by the quarter hours sounding a ting-tang strike on both bells. The profusely engraved backplate and verge cock apron depict symmetrical floral and scrolling leaf and vine patterns around a prominent signature cartouche: Gam Voyce London.
The break-arch brass dial has a silvered chapter ring, a circular signature plaque to the arch, date aperture right under the middle and a false pendulum aperture under the XII. The chapter ring has Roman numerals within a minute ring and an outer Arabic five-minute track. The dial centre is finely matted and the gilt-brass corner spandrels are of the crown and sceptre design, while the arch spandrels depict putti looking outwards. The time is indicated by a fine pair of pierced blued steel hands.
The ebonised fruitwood veneered oak case has an inverted bell top surmounted by a brass swinging carrying handle, well-formed and returned top moulding and door edge moulding. All sides are glazed so that the fine movement is almost entirely visible. The arched side panels are surmounted by smaller shaped windows. Both doors have fretted quadrants backed with red silk and well-formed elaborated concave mouldings.
The clock is in excellent fully restored condition and keeping good time.
The maker, Gamaliel Voyce, perhaps originally of French family origin, was born in England around 1673. Voyce became the patriarch of a large family of 18th-century clockmakers who eventually settled in Gloucestershire. However, Gamaliel himself worked in London and was apprenticed to Sarah Payne from 1687 to 1694.2 Sarah, widow of Nicholas Payne, was one of a small group of female horologists of the time. A record in the Clockmakers Company minutes notes:
"14th day of January 1694...Gamaliel Voyce, who was the Apprentice of Sarah Payne was admitted and sworne a Free clockmaker &c vide his subscription in ffol 216 of the large Parchment Book."
Witnesses that day were notables such as William Clement, Joseph Windmills, Joseph Knibb...

Fine Brass Pocket Sundial and Compass by Michael Butterfield Paris, circa 1700
By Butterfield Paris
Located in Oxfordshire, United Kingdom
A fine brass Anglo-French octagonal pocket sundial with compass by Michael Butterfield, circa 1700.
The sundial can be used anywhere between latitudes of 40° and 60° covering Southern Spain and Italy north to Scandinavia. The elaborately engraved base plate has various Roman chapter rings with subdivisions on which the folding hinged gnomon (a triangular flap) casts its shadow. It is signed by the maker in the following manner: Butterfield A Paris. On one side is a glazed recessed compass, with a blued steel hand, to position the instrument in such a way that the time can be read. The triangular gnomon is richly engraved and can be set for a particular latitude by sliding the gnomon up or down, the latitude being indicated by the beak of a figured engraved bird. The folding gnomon and cut corners enable the dial to be carried in the pocket.
The underside shows the latitudes of various European places, including London and Rome.
Its maker Michael Butterfield (b.1635, d.1724) was an English instrument maker who based himself in Paris for a time. These types of dials, often replicated by other makers, became known as Butterfield Dials...

19th Century Repeating Gilt-Brass Carriage Clock by the Famous Drocourt
Located in Oxfordshire, United Kingdom
A superb repeating carriage clock with a gilt-brass gorge case by the famous maker Drocourt, circa 1870.
A lovely eight-day striking and repeating carriage clock signed and numbered by the retailer on the enamel dial, GROHÉ PENNINGTON & TYPKE SUCCESSORS 4022 WIGMORE STREET LONDON, circa 1870.
The superb gilt-brass gorge case has facetted glass panels to all sides so that the movement is almost entirely visible. The top has an oval window through which the original gilt brass platform escapement can be seen. At the back, there is a glazed door giving access to the winding and setting arbors. The clock is surmounted by a typically shaped carrying handle.
The circular enamel dial is set in a fine elaborately engraved gilt-brass mask and has a Roman chapter ring with an outer minute track with Arabic five-minute markers. The time is indicated by a fine pair of blued-steel Breguet hands. The retailer has marked the dial in the following manner GROHÉ PENNINGTON & TYPKE SUCCESSORS 4022 WIGMORE STREET LONDON.
The spring-driven eight-day movement of this wonderful carriage clock is constructed between plates. The inside of the backplate is marked Drocourt in an oval. The going train has a high-quality English lever escapement on a gilt platform with hairspring balance and regulation. It can be adjusted by a regulator pin which can be seen through the window in the top and is accessible through the back door. The striking indicates the hour fully and the half hours with a single stroke on a gong. In addition, it has a repeat button at the top, with which the last hour struck can be repeated at will. The backplate is stamped with the Drocourt mark and the word HANDS and an arrow to indicate the function of the arbor and the direction in which to turn.
Note on the makers
Pierre & Alfred Drocourt were one of the top makers of carriage clocks in the mid to late Victorian period, having a factory at Saint-Nicolas-d’Ailermont in France, which was the most important town for carriage clock manufacture at the time. They also had premises in Paris at Rue Debelleyme 28 and Rue de Limoges. They produced superb carriage clocks that were often decorative and were awarded numerous awards at exhibitions, such as the Bronze Medal at Paris 1867, the Silver at Paris 1878 and the gold at Paris in 1889. The son, Alfred Drocourt, succeeded his father Pierre Drocourt sometime in the 1870s. Clocks by this maker have become very sought after by collectors.
Note on the retailer
James Grohé was a clockmaker and dealer established in Wigmore Street in the period 1832-1880. The company later moved to Cavendish Square and subsequently to Wimpole Street. As James died in 1872, his business was continued by his successors. Several clocks are known by his hand and always of the best quality and sometimes retailed by others, e.g. T. Martin and Co...
