A beautiful Queen Anne walnut secretaire chest / escritoire, circa 1710 in date.
The upper section features a moulded cornice above a secret bulge front frieze drawer, this is above a hinged fall front clad in burr walnut-figured book veneers framed in broad cross-banded borders edged with feather-banding.
The interior housing three pairs of pigeon holes concealing secret compartments above a central cupboard flanked by three side drawers on each side with six further drawers below, all clad in burr figured veneers edged with feather banding and fitted with brass pendant handles. The rear of the central cupboard is a concealed panel that sildes away to reveal four further secret drawers.
The base of the chest comprises two half-width drawers above two full width drawers, all fitted with pendant shaped brass drop handles, The cabinet is raised on bracket feet.
The walnut secretaire is outlined throughout with decorative herringbone stringing.
Complete with working locks and original keys.
Condition:
In excellent condition having been beautifully cleaned polished and waxed in our workshops, please see photos for confirmation.

The arched top with scrolled corners and centered by a laurel wreath and crossed acanthus branches, above a central large door at top by a lyre on drapery-covered plinth, flanked by scrolling acanthus, with a smaller door to each side hung with floral swags and with central oval plate, the divides cast with a slender flower-filled vase, the interior with adjustable shelves and drawers to the bottom, on shaped foliate-cast plinth and acanthus-capped tapering feet.
Inscribed F. Linke to the top right bronze mount and stamped “C LINKE” on the back of the locks.
Linke was born in Pankraz in Bohemia and was celebrated by the French as one of the greatest ébénistes of meubles de style at the turn of the century. He began his apprenticeship with a Bohemian master at the age of thirteen. Four years later, he toured Austria, settling and working in Vienna for two years. Linke arrived in Paris in 1875, and by 1881 he had established his own small workshop at 170 rue du Faubourg St. Antoine. Taking 18th century styles as his starting point and adapting earlier styles to contemporary taste, Linke produced fine quality furniture, steadily expanding his business during the next 20 years. He firmly established his reputation after receiving a gold medal at the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1900 for his extraordinary Grand Bureau. He continued to use international fairs as a means of exploring new markets, exhibiting at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, the Liege in Belgium and the 1908 Franco-British exhibition in London. Linke’s highly original designs sprang from the Régence and Rococo styles but were imbued with something quite new – Rococo curves were laden with gilt-bronze sculptural mounts in the tradition of A.-C. Boulle (1642-1732) or Charles Cressent (1685-1758). Stylistically, the new designs still adhered to the Rococo; the novelty, however, was Linke’s fusion of the Rococo with the liveliness and the fluidity of the ‘art nouveau’. A nice combined Victorian billiards and life pool scoreboard made of light oak. The billiard scorer sits upon a lockable ball cabinet that can house 32 balls, which then sits upon a cupboard. The cupboard comprises of two drawers, a pair of panelled doors enclosing a shelf, the cupboard raised on a plinth base. The scorer comprises of two blue rollers with gilt painted numbers, 0 to 20 / 20 to 40 / 40 to 60 / 60 to 80 / 80 to 100, with two ebony slides to mark your score, one spot and one plain. The Life Pool board consists of 12 slides with coloured discs, each colour representing the player's cue ball and the order of play. The colours of the discs being blue, brown, green, white, red, yellow, black, pink, spot orange, spot white, spot red and spot yellow. When each slide is pulled back 3 boxwood discs are revealed, one for each life of the player. There are also "stars" hiding, and these are used as extra lives. In the middle of the scoreboard there is a slate board for keeping scores etc.

Pictured on Page 493 and Daybook Entry on Page 477 in “François Linke 1855-1946 The Belle Epoque of French Furniture” By Christopher Payne.
Designed in 1900, this model commode was conceived en suite with a dressing table, index number 600, and a double bed, number 601. Although clearly started in 1899, a note in the Blue Daybook shows that the ciseleur enriched the chasing on the bronzes much later, in September 1902, and with a fleur de pêcher marble top costing 110 francs. Whereas two of the matching beds and dressing tables were made, Linke made five versions of this commode between 1899 and 1910, with one example made for the compagnie nationale de Buenos-Aires in 1908.

A very rare Regency period ebonised, brass inlaid and ormolu-mounted cabinet, with mirrored doors and Calacatta viola marble top, in the manner of James Newton. English, c. 1815. An outstanding opportunity to own a piece of history that will beautifully fit in both classical and modern interiors.
Why we like it
One of the most elegant designs from the early 19th century, inspired by the ancient Egyptian motifs. The brass ball-feet and ormolu mounted columns are rare and unusual features, and the beautifully oxidised mirror plates and antique marble tops add to their timeless elegance.
Attribution
Designed in the early 19th century ‘antique’ manner, popularised by Percier and Fontaine and relate to patterns for 'Chiffoniers' and 'Drawing Room' pier tables published in George Smith's Collection of Designs for Household Furniture, 1808, pls. 114 and 122. Ebonised in the Egyptian taste and with the stylised palm-flowered pillars, relating to those of tripod torcheres in Thomas Hope's Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807, pl. 22.
Identical columns and ball-feet are seen on a group of pier cabinets, including a pair, sold Sotheby’s London, 29 June 2005, Lot 125, which is traditionally associated with the output of the London firm of James Newton. He labelled a suite of very similar chiffoniers sold from the collection of Maureen, Marchioness of Dufferin and Ava, Christie's, London, 25 March 1999, lots 320-321. While stylistically these cabinets relate to the pieces ascribed to James Newton, their constructional features, such as the use of cedar linings for the secretaire fittings, is relevant to the practice of another highly esteemed London firm of the Regency period, John McLean and Son.

Upholder and cabinet maker, trained in the celebrated workshops of Lawrence Fell and William Turton - business rivals of the great Thomas Chippendale - and, in the tradition of ambitious men, married the daughter of the latter, which in part accounts for his meteoric rise to prominence; executing commissions, inter alia, for Matthew Boulton at Soho House, the Earl of Jersey at Osterley, and Sir Gilbert Heathcote; familiar with the fashions of the Regency period, he is listed as a subscriber to Thomas Sheraton’s 1803 ‘Cabinet Dictionary’; a pair of chairs with close concordances to a design of Thomas Hope’s Household Furniture’ (plate 22), and bearing his label may be viewed at the Royal Pavilion Brighton...
