Dior is best known for his legendary fashion house and New Look collection.

When Christian Dior launched his haute couture house, in 1946, he wanted nothing less than to make “an elegant woman more beautiful and a beautiful woman more elegant.” He succeeded, and in doing so the visionary designer altered the landscape of 20th century fashion. Vintage Dior bags, shoes, evening dresses, shirts and other garments and accessories are known today for their feminine and sophisticated sensibility.

Two years after the end of World War II, the fashion crowd and the moribund haute couture industry were yearning for security and prosperity, desperate to discard the drab, sexless, utilitarian garb imposed by wartime deprivation. Dior’s New Look collection definitively declared that opulence, luxury and femininity were in.

Dior skirts could have 40-meter-circumference hems, and outfits could weigh up to 60 pounds. They were cut and shaped like architecture, on strong foundations that molded women and “freed them from nature,” Dior said. Rather than rationing, his ladies wanted reams of fabric and 19-inch waists enforced by wire corsets, and the fashion world concurred. The debut got a standing ovation.

In the subsequent decade, Paris ruled as the undisputed fashion capital of the world, and Christian Dior reigned as its king. Find vintage Dior dresses, skirts and other clothing and accessories on 1stDibs.

Which gold is best for earrings depends on your personal preferences. In terms of color, yellow gold will bring a warm glow to earrings, while white gold provides a sleek, cool appearance. Rose gold adds a touch of pinkish color that many people love. Alloy types have their own benefits as well. Generally, 18-karat gold will show off a richer color, while 14-karat gold tends to be stronger and more scratch-resistant because it contains more base metal. Generally, artisans don't often use pure 24-karat gold for earrings because the metal is malleable and more prone to wear and tear as a result. Shop a large selection of gold earrings on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 21, 2023
There is no single best type of earring that does not tarnish. Precious metals like platinum, gold and titanium aren't especially prone to tarnishing, and surgical and stainless steel earrings resist tarnishing as well. Keep in mind that how you care for your earrings will also impact their appearance. Taking your earrings off before you swim or shower and cleaning them according to the maker's instructions will help them continue to look like new for longer. On 1stDibs, shop a wide range of earrings.
  • 1stDibs ExpertJanuary 23, 2024
The rings that are best for an engagement are the ones that appeal to you and suit your budget. There are no rules when it comes to engagement rings, so really, any ring can be worn as one. The key is to find a ring that reflects your taste. You can choose from solitaires with single gemstones, halos that feature a large stone surrounded by a ring of smaller ones, trilogy rings with one large stone set between two smaller accent stones and many other styles. Engagement rings also don't have to feature gemstones. A domed or flat band ring in a precious metal like platinum or yellow gold can also represent your promise to marry that special someone. On 1stDibs, explore a large collection of engagement rings.

The best jewelry for men is a matter of preference. Men can choose from a variety of jewelry such as necklaces, rings, studs, cufflinks, earrings, bracelets, and more. Jewelry has indeed been universal for eons — Ancient Egyptians were often hard at work designing jewelry and adorning themselves with an array of necklaces, rings and other items, and nearly every Egyptian, rich or poor, was buried with some kind of jewelry. Shop a collection of antique and vintage men’s jewelry from some of the world’s top jewelers on 1stDibs.
