This Italian trumeau mirror, hand-carved circa 1780, features a 20 ½” H x 38” W mirror set beneath a maritime oil painting. The giltwood frame has angular protrusions in the upper corner, each filled with a small, raised floret. An egg-and-dart border graces the edges of the frame, interrupted by stepped-out plinths at the bottom corners. Both the mirror pane and the painting are surrounded by bead and reel motifs.
The wonderfully executed painting depicts a bustling harbor filled with vessels from three different countries. A majority of the crafts feature English flags, while there is one from the Netherlands, with the third representation being a flag from the nation of Catalonia, which would later become an autonomous state in Spain. The blue sky, filled with white fluffy clouds, provides good weather for the numerous boats and ships navigating the choppy waters. Very mountainous terrain can be seen in the background, with a white lighthouse and a blue roof on the shore. In front of the highlands is tall Romanesque architecture comprised of several niches, transoms, and bricked columns topped with flowing greenery. An exceptional carved and painted Trumeau mirror, circa 1800, France. The antique mirror features a large carved and gilt wreath that is situated in the larger shaped panel above the glass. It consists of carved and blossoming roses on one side, with a laurel branch on the other, meeting in the middle at a carved knotted ribbon with tassels. Below this wonderful work of art is the Trumeau mirror. The mirror is nearly square, measuring 17” H x 18-½” W, and is framed by carved and gilt trim, worked into twisted ribbon and beaded pearl motifs. Trumeau mirrors, also known as pier glass, emerged in 18th-century France. The original trumeau mirrors were set in large, rectangular wood paneling, or boiserie, that frequently incorporated carvings or paintings. The trumeau mirror was especially popular with the upper middle class in the 1700s who had disposable income to decorate their homes like the wood-paneled estates of the elite.
As mirrors became more widely available to the general public, the trumeau gained prominence in fashionable home decor. While trumeau initially referred to a mirror set in a wall lodged between two doors or windows, it gradually shifted to describing a mirror positioned above a mantel.
Though trumeau mirrors come in a variety of styles, they generally fall into one of two categories: those that incorporate painted art and those that feature carved motifs. The decorative elements are typically above the mirror on the top half of the wooden panel.
