American
Alan Feltus was born in Washington, D.C. in 1943 and grew up in Manhattan. Feltus studied for one year at the Tyler School of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, and then received a BFA from Cooper Union in New York, and an MFA from Yale University. Since 1987, he has lived and worked in Italy. In his paintings, while working intuitively, he choreographs figures in enigmatic relationships, without referring to live models or preconceived concepts and compositional ideas. He creates a silence in his paintings and avoids specific meanings, believing that paintings “which are difficult or seemingly impossible to fully comprehend” are the most interesting.
Feltus has received many awards for his work that include the Rome Prize Fellowship, a National Endowment for the Arts Individual Grant in Painting, a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Grant in Painting, two Pollock Krasner Foundation Grants in Painting, the Augustus Saint-Gaudens Award from Cooper Union, and the Raymond P.R. Neilson Prize from the National Academy of Design. His work has been featured in exhibitions around the country and he’s had solo museum exhibitions at the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, The Huntington Museum of Art in WV, and the Wichita Art Museum. His work is in public collections that include the Arkansas Art Center, the Bayly Art Museum in Charlottesville, VA, The Corcoran Gallery of art, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, and Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., the Huntington Museum of Art in WV, the National Academy of Design in New York, the Oklahoma City Art Museum, and the Wichita Art Museum. The print and mat are in good condition. The frame is in fair to good condition with normal wear. The Plexiglas has some faint scratches.

'Scratchin' High' — early American rodeo

'Scratchin' High', etching, edition not stated, c. 1919. Signed in pencil. A fine, rich impression, in warm black ink, on cream wove paper, with margins (11/16 to 2 1/8 inches). Two small spots of toning in the bottom right margin, away from the image; barely visible printing creases in the top left margin and the middle right background, otherwise in very good condition. Matted to museum standards, unframed.
ABOUT THIS WORK
The cowboy's work of breaking wild horses into riding horses evolved into the competitive sport of professional rodeo in the 1880s. In 1919 at the Calgary Stampede in Alberta, Canada, Borein sketched a rider on the famous bucking horse named 'I-See-U'. He later made this etching of the dramatic scene, entitling it 'Scratchin' High'. ''Scratching'' refers to the rider's technique of maintaining balance on a bucking horse by a continuous movement of the feet in a kicking motion.
Impressions of this work are in the permanent collections of the Buffalo Bill Center of the West (online), and the Whitney Western Art Museum.

Moses Soyer (December 25, 1899 – September 3, 1974) was an American social realist painter. Soyer was born in Borisoglebsk, Russian Empire, in 1899. His father was a Hebrew scholar, writer and teacher. His family emigrated to the United States in 1912. Two of Soyer's brothers, Raphael (his identical twin) and Isaac were also painters. Soyer's wife, Ida, was a dancer, and dancers are a recurring subject in his paintings. Soyer studied art in New York, first at Cooper Union and later at the Ferrer Art School, where he studied under the Ashcan painters Robert Henri and George Bellows. He had his first solo exhibition in 1926 and began teaching art the following year at the Contemporary Art School and The New School. He died in the Chelsea Hotel in New York while painting dancer and choreographer Phoebe Neville.
