French, 1828-1894

Alfred Dubucand, Born in Paris on November 25th of 1828. Dubucand studied under Justin Marie Lequien (French, 1796–1881) and later under Antoine-Louis Barye. He worked almost exclusively as an animal sculptor or "Animalier", though he was very familiar with capturing the human element in his Equestrian and portrait groups; some of his most successful works were his studies of French-occupied North Africa and his Eastern nomadic subjects, these often hunt scenes with horse and rider, sometimes accompanied by domestic dogs. His bronzes are always exceptionally well-detailed with special attention shown to the patina, a skillset he learned from Barye; his early works are often characterized by more complex and varied chemical patination. In 1867, his wax model of Dead Pheasant was exhibited for his debut at the Paris Salon. Dubucand continued to exhibit his juried works at Salon every year through 1883, these often exhibited as wax models and sometimes plaster that subsequently were cast in bronze. His exhibitions must have been rather well received, as much of his work first presented in wax was in later years again exhibited at Salon cast in bronze.

His works were often entered into the annual Salon art exhibition in Paris where he contributed works over the course of his career. He was one of the prize pupils of Antoine-Louis Barye. Dubucand made his debut at the 1867 Salon with a wax model of a dead pheasant, a rather inauspicious start when considering the higher quality sculptures he would submit later in his career. He modelled mainly animal groups, producing a number of deer, dog, and horse sculptures. His better casts feature a warm, mid-brown patination, sometimes coming in even lighter shades bordering on a very light yellow, being nearly the colour of the bronze metal itself. He frequently experimented with chemical patinas, learning the patination process from his teacher and mentor Barye who stretched the boundary with his now famous dark green patinas. A rarely found model of Dubucand's Arab Hunter on Horseback, this is the smaller "cabinet bronze" size that features particularly well on desks and small tables. It is a delightful sand-cast example with a reddish-brown overall patina and features a seated Arab horseman looking out into the distance having spotted something important from his mount. His pair of greyhound hunting dogs are at ease, though one lifts its head having perhaps caught the scent of prey.
