Atang Tshikare Furniture

South African, b. 1980

Atang Tshikare is a multidisciplinary creative based in Cape Town, who has specialized in sculptural furniture since 2016. Born in Bloemfontein in 1980, he has been drawing for as long as he can remember, on any surface, he could get his hands on. A self-taught artist in a wide range of media, he was influenced by the visual storytelling and graphic style of his father, an anti-apartheid activist, who illustrated for various pan African publications and art magazines. Tshikare began a full-time art career in 2010 with his company Zabalaza Design, collaborating with local artists and working on commissions with brands such as Adidas Originals, Puma, BMW and MTV Base. He began exhibiting limited-edition work with Southern Guild in 2012, applying his architectural line-based artwork to furniture and telling personal narratives using urban-inspired forms.

Atang Tshikare, Mollo Oa Leifo (Mme), chair made in South Africa,
By Atang Tshikare
Located in Cape Town, WC
Mollo Oa Leifo – Mme (“fire in the hearth – Mother”), pays homage to the African mothers who give knowledge. The Litema pattern on the frame, beadwork on the seat and weaving on the backrest of the chairs are all adornments of Bantu cultural symbols that were used in ancient times by our foremothers to record information, express feelings and exchange messages. This Afrofuturistic dining chair has a backrest made with handwoven grass from Lesotho and stained with a natural dye. The glass bead detail is woven along the seat, and fastened along a hand carved wooden frame. It has a symbol of fire in the middle to symbolize the hearth. The bronze Bantu pictograms detail is based on that symbolize cast and engraved into the wood whilst the beadwork is handsewn onto the fabric. This Louis VXI medallion chair is one of a set that is part of an Afrofuturist Period Room...

Walnut and Corian Gallery Bench Mid-Century Modern inspired Minimal Handmade
By Le Corbusier, Maarten van Severen, George Nakashima, Figure Ground
Located in Brooklyn, NY
This bench is composed of a Corian top floating on an elegantly detailed walnut frame. It is large enough for one's imagination or a group conversation. Spanning 7' long, it commands environments while subtly disappearing like its double miter joints that waterfall into the walnut grain. The bench is sawn from long hand-selected boards, carefully milled with a miter joint detail that cascades or 'waterfalls' a continuous grain from the seat down through the legs. To further accentuate the bench's slender span, we chose a double miter cut on the edge profile that almost makes the Bench's thickness at first glance disappear. The white-to-walnut bench refines the moment of repose. Its minimalism is as seductive as its touch to the senses. This bench is versatile and can just as easily define a vestibule or gallery window as it will sit aside a matching dining table. Finished in Tung oil it maintains a natural look and feel for the locally sourced black walnut. This item is available in custom sizes or finishes upon request. Due to natural materials used, the object received will be unique in material figuring and coloration. No item assembly or installation is necessary. Care for the object is minimal and can be conditioned every 2 years to maintain the original finish. All of our pieces are originally designed and handmade in the Brooklyn, NY based Figure+Ground studio; we don't believe in the separation of design and fabrication. Each item is handcrafted, serialized, and shipped with a “Certificate of Authenticity”, documenting its place in history. Own an original Figure+Ground Piece...
