Berthe Morisot Art

French, 1841-1895
Berthe Morisot was born at Bourges, France on January 14, 1841. She grew up in a bourgeois family which, in a break from usual practice, encouraged Berthe and her sister, Edme, in their painting. She first studied with Guichard, a follower of Ingres, but in 1862 she made the acquaintance of Corot, and went over to his disciple Oudinot. Her next great influence was Manet, and it was under his guidance that she took up figure-painting as well as landscapes, exhibiting both kinds of work at the Salons from 1870 on. As a young woman, she joined the avant-garde and showed works at the impressionist exhibits that challenged the official Salon; her earlier paintings are lovely examples of what might be called mainstream impressionism. In 1874 Morisot married Manet's brother Eugene, about whom very little is known. They had a daughter, Julie. Morisot began to paint remarkably challenging pictures, and her fellow artists began to admire her more and more. Unfortunately she was not thought by everyone to be a painter of the first rank. At first she had more reputation as a hostess than an artist, entertaining such men of talent as Degas, Renoir, Pissaro, Manet and the poet, Mallarme. She often posed for Manet, being his model for some of his well-known works. She died in March of 1895. Written and submitted by Jean Ershler Schatz, artist and researcher from Laguna Woods, California. Les Aloès, Cimiez By Berthe Morisot
Located in New Orleans, LA
Berthe Morisot 1841-1895 French Les Aloès, Cimiez Oil on canvas This masterpiece was painted by the renowned Impressionist artist, Berthe Morisot. Entitled Les Aloès, Cimiez, the captivating painting serves as an ode to the enchanting landscapes of the Mediterranean and tells a timeless tale of familial warmth. Celebrated for her ability to capture the essence of a moment, Morisot takes the viewer to the sun-kissed hills of Cimiez, the upscale hilltop neighborhood overlooking the azure beauty of Nice. In the aftermath of the Impressionist Exhibition of 1888, Morisot, accompanied by her husband Eugène Manet and their daughter Julie, sought refuge in the picturesque villa Ratti. The sojourn to the South of France offered the artist a bounty of beauty and countryside quietude to continue her painting. Under Morisot's delicate brush, the aloes of the garden come alive, seemingly dancing in a gentle breeze. Her palette of pastel blues, yellows and greens belie the tranquility of the setting. Beyond the swirling leaves in the foreground, a slender feminine figure graces the threshold of the villa – perhaps the artist's daughter, Julie Manet...

In 1864, Morisot exhibited for the first time in the highly esteemed Salon de Paris. Sponsored by the government and judged by Academicians, the Salon was the official, annual exhibition of the Académie des beaux-arts in Paris. Her work was selected for exhibition in six subsequent Salons until, in 1874, she joined the "rejected" Impressionists in the first of their own exhibitions, which included Paul Cézanne, Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Alfred Sisley. It was held at the studio of the photographer Nadar. Morisot went on to participate in all but one of the following eight impressionist exhibitions, between 1874 and 1886. Morisot was married to Eugène Manet, the brother of her friend and colleague Édouard Manet. She was described by art critic Gustave Geffroy in 1894 as one of "les trois grandes dames" (The three great ladies) of Impressionism alongside Marie Bracquemond...
