Bibi Valentin. 1859. Etching and drypoint. Kennedy catalog 50 state ii; Glasgow catalog 34 state ii. 6 x 8 7/8 (sheet 8 11/16 x 10 11/16). Glasgow records 44 known impressions. A rich impression with burr, printed on watermarked laid paper with full margins. Signed and dated in the plate. Housed in a 20 x 16-inch archival mat
A young girl, sits facing the viewer, leaning on her left elbow, legs extended to left. She wears a high-necked smock and buttoned boots, and rou nd her short fair hair she has a ribbon, which falls down onto her shoulder at right.
SITTER
The daughter of Valentin (fl. 1859), she posed for Whistler in Paris. This is one of two children's portraits done in 1859, with Bibi Lalouette. In 1892 Mme. Valentin wrote to Whistler:
'Je vais vous paraître bien indiscrète en vous demandant une de vos belles Eaux-fortes. celà me ferait un bien grand plaisir car nous n'avions de vous que le portrait de ma fille, que vous aviez fait rue des Sts. Pères, et qu'elle m'a repris depuis son mariage.'
(Translated: 'You will think me very indiscreet in asking you for one of your beautiful Etchings. it would give me great pleasure because the only work we have of yours is the portrait of my daughter, which you had done in the Rue des Sts. Pères, and which she took when she married.'

James Abbott McNeill Whistler
James Abbott McNeill Whistler was an American artist active during the American Gilded Age and based primarily in the United Kingdom. Whistler was born on July 11, 1834, in Lowell. During his formative years in Paris in the 1850s, Whistler was influenced by the injunctions of the poet and theorist Charles Baudelaire that artists should take subjects from modern life and seek a new beauty in the teeming cities. Whistler's first major suite of prints, his French Set brought critical acclaim but disappointing sales. Seeking more generous patrons, he moved to London in 1859. Initially, under the influence of his brother-in-law Francis Seymour Haden, a pioneer of the etching revival, he began a series of superbly observed and finely detailed views of the River Thames with its shipping, thriving wharves and picturesque characters. In his Thames Set etchings, Whistler often introduced the figures of workmen, boatmen or loungers in the foregrounds. Whistler died on July 17, 1903, in London.
