Carrington & Co Case Pieces and Storage Cabinets

British

If dishing up exquisite silverware was Carrington & Co.’s bread and butter, trophy cups and royal jewels were the main course. Among the illustrious names that commissioned brooches, tableware, cufflinks and more across its rich history were Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, Edward VII, George V and the Russian Tsars.

Founded in 1873 by John Bodman Carrington, Carrington & Co. came out of a manufacturing business tied to G.R. Collis & Co. It began producing silver plates for restaurants, hotels and ships in 1880, and after nearly 10 years, Carrington & Co. expanded into dealing precious stones and jewelry. Partners William Carrington Smith and George Bruford later joined Carrington, who retired in 1906.

Its silverware matched popular eras of taste, including the ornate and well-decorated Late Victorian style and the light eclecticism that defined Edwardian style. Its trophies, which included the 1921 Prince of Wales Cup, reflected the company’s talent in serveware and further developed its design reach. In the 1920s, Carrington added another royal favorite — natural pearls — to its repertoire with gentlemen’s watches and ladies’ wristlet watches.

Of its numerous royal commissions, the Dorset Bow Royal brooch, Cullinan III brooch and Cullinan IV brooch have achieved the most prestige. The Dorset Bow’s design was said to be drawn from an 1855 piece made for Empress Eugénie. Queen Mary wore the brooch on several occasions before giving it to Princess Elizabeth as a wedding gift.

The Cullinan III and IV brooches were cut from the Cullinan Diamond, the largest gem-quality rough diamond ever found. Queen Mary commissioned them in 1911 as a pair, which were originally set into the band of her crown. They are considered to be the most valuable brooches in the world.

The Carrington & Co. firm was acquired by Collingwood in 1922.

After graduating in 1946 Sobota apprenticed with his namesake and uncle, a furniture designer as well, Karl Schmidt, who designed for Berkey and Gay Furniture Company. He apprenticed for seven years leading to his designing for Grand Rapids Bookcase and Chair Co., the Mt. Airy Furniture Co., Hekman Furniture and finally Century Furniture for whom he designed from 1952 until 1995. He designed all the company’s wood furniture during that time in total, over 150 collections. The most notable being Citation, Chin Hua, Claridge, and the Henry Ford Museum and the British National Trust collections. Sobota is credited for helping make Century Furniture the industry leader it is today. Century Furniture Company, one of the world’s largest privately owned upper-end residential furniture manufacturers, was founded in 1947 by Harley Ferguson Shuford, Sr. When first formed Century Furniture was a selling agent for local upholstery lines. But as soon as a year later Shuford had built a case goods plant in Hickory, North Carolina and that started it all. Harley Shuford along with his siblings and children acquired company after company expanding into upholstered furniture, chair manufacturing, and even a leather division. Century has made it through feast and famine in the furniture business and today retains their long-standing role as a leading force in the American home furnishings market. Tiffany & Co. is so famous due to its rich heritage. A young Franklin Delano Roosevelt proposed to his future wife, Eleanor, with a Tiffany ring in 1904. Vanderbilts, Whitneys, Astors and members of the Russian imperial family all wore Tiffany & Co. jewels. And Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis preferred Tiffany china for state dinners at the White House. In addition, Tiffany & Co. helped put diamonds on the map in 1886 by introducing the American marketplace to the solitaire diamond design, which is still among the most popular engagement ring styles. The legendary American luxury house Tiffany & Co. is currently owned by Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton (LVMH), which completed the acquisition of the company in January, 2021. The firm started out modestly — Charles Lewis Tiffany and John B. Young founded it in Connecticut as a “stationery and fancy goods emporium” in 1837, at a time when European imports still dominated the nascent American luxury market. Upon Charles’ death in 1902, his son Louis Comfort Tiffany took over artistic direction for the brand. On 1stDibs, find authentic Tiffany & Co. pieces from some of the world's top sellers.

Jacob & Co. is considered expensive for a few reasons. For one thing, the watch collectors of the world know the watchmaker for its multicolored-gemstone designs as well as its oversized and innovative complications. There are substantial costs related to the design, assembly and premium materials associated with Jacob & Co.’s luxury watches, which are painstakingly crafted in Switzerland and sold all over the world. The price tag reflects the brand’s use of meticulously sourced round brilliant cut diamonds and metals such as 18-karat gold. Additionally, only a limited number of timepieces leave the watchmaker's workshops each year, so demand usually far exceeds supply. Find Jacob & Co. watches for sale on 1stDibs.
