Dale Chihuly Art

American, b. 1941

With his sculptural works that fuse naturalistic forms with vibrant colors, Dale Chihuly has established himself as one of the world’s preeminent contemporary makers of art glass. The Tacoma, Washington, native’s experimental techniques — manifest in large-scale glass sculptures, installations and environmental artworks alongside smaller table-top pieces — combine fine art, design, architecture and craft.

Chihuly’s inspired creative energy has brought glass blowing to a place at the forefront of the arts in the United States. His prolific body of work is coupled with a dedication to artistic instruction, education and community. Trained in interior design at the University of Washington, he pursued graduate work with Harvey Littleton, who built the first academic art glass program in the U.S. at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. After further studies at the Rhode Island School of Design, Chihuly was awarded a 1968 Fulbright Fellowship to study glass blowing at the Venini glass factory on the island of Murano in Venice, where he was first introduced to group collaboration in glass making. Not only has Chihuly been committed to his own improvement as an artist, but he has also devoted much of his career to sharing his knowledge. He returned to RISD as an instructor, and after working there for more than a decade and he cofounded the Pilchuck Glass School in Washington State in 1971. An automobile accident in 1976 left Chihuly blind in one eye; a subsequent injury while bodysurfing weakened one shoulder, leaving him reliant on assistant glassblowers to execute his designs.

Chihuly’s skills and technical innovations have allowed him to make pieces in an astonishing array of patterns, textures and hues — yet his work can be recognized immediately. He has created several notable extended series of artworks. These include his “Seaforms,” which evoke shells, starfish and other marine animals; “Blankets,” which are composed of cylindrical units in patterns suggested by Native American textiles; and, most famously, his grand chandeliers made up of scores of curling, curving, pepper-shaped elements. Whether large or small, as you will see on 1stDibs, the works of Dale Chihuly blend practical flair and bravura artistry. They are a highlight of any contemporary art and design collection.

This elegant work, produced with the highest quality lithography by Frank Stella at Tyler Graphics, was created in a limited quantity solely for VIP collectors at that one day's event as it was a true one-off creation. Not too many of them have survived a quarter century on, and rarely in such good condition. Not too many people you know can boast that they possess a Frank Stella shopping bag. BASKET DRAWING Signed Lithograph Free-form Abstract Drawing Graphite Pearl Blue

Located in Union City, NJ
BASKET DRAWING, by Dale Chihuly(American b.1941) renowned glass sculpture artist depicts one of his signature abstract basket forms. This limited edition lithograph was printed in 8 colors on archival printmaking paper 100% rag. BASKET DRAWING is expressed as a free form abstract depiction of baskets using intricate interwoven dark graphite gray and black lines accented with pearlized drops, pearlescent blue rims, and a small circle of rose red near the signature. Dale Chihuly is recognized as the leader of a worldwide renaissance in glassblowing as a fine art. He is also considered the movement’s greatest innovator, pushing the limitations of the medium and constantly pursuing new forms and techniques. His work as a teacher and team director has helped to inspire a new generation of artists. Print size - 30 ¼ x 22 inches, unframed, mint condition, pencil signed by Dale Chihuly Edition Size - 150, plus proofs Year Published - 1996 Printer - JK Fine Art Editions Co. ABOUT THE ARTIST- Dale Chihuly, (born September 20, 1941, Tacoma, Washington, U.S.), American artist whose glass sculptures—often presented in complex and dynamic public projects—led to a resurgence of interest in that medium. Chihuly studied interior design at the University of Washington in Seattle (B.A., 1965) and received an M.S. in sculpture from the University of Wisconsin, where he studied glassblowing under Harvey Littleton. In 1968 he received an M.F.A. in ceramics from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). That same year he traveled to Italy on a Fulbright scholarship and a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation grant and worked at Venini Fabrica, the renowned glassblowing workshop in Murano, an island in the Venice Lagoon. Returning to the United States in 1969, he established the RISD glassblowing program and founded (1971) the influential Pilchuck Glass School north of Seattle. There he created the first of a number of environmental installations—a group of clear glass bulbs floating on Pilchuck Pond. He continued to teach at RISD until 1980. In 1976 an automobile accident left Chihuly blind in one eye, and thereafter he was dependent on assistant gaffers (glassblowers) to execute his distinctive designs. Chihuly’s works in glass both echo and extend glass’s historical relationship with functionality. Vase, basket, bowl, and other vessel forms dominated many of his individual pieces, though enlivened with rhythmic tempos and curvaceous motifs far removed from domestic use. In 1996 he completed Chihuly over Venice, a collaborative international undertaking involving glassblowers from Finland, Ireland, and Mexico. That project included Chandeliers (an enduring theme), which were installed around the city and lit by natural light, and numerous other glass forms that were released to float freely along the Venetian canals. In 2002 his Chihuly Bridge of Glass accompanied the opening of the Museum of Glass in his native Tacoma, Washington. Chihuly’s vibrantly colored organic glass creations were immediately recognizable. His technical innovations enabled the production of a tremendous range of patterns, colors, and textures. Among his several extended series were Blankets, for which he used cylindrical forms covered with patterns derived from Native American blankets...

Jerusalem Series

Located in Missouri, MO
Jerusalem Series, 1999 By. Dale Chihuly (American, b. 1941) 22.5" x 14.5 Signed and Dated Top/Front More than one million visitors saw Chihuly in the Light of Jerusalem 2000. "The Jerusalem project started with lunch at my kitchen table with Izzika and Yaffa Gaon. They had visited Venice when I hung Chandeliers over the canals, and we all thought an installation project would be great for Israel. We discussed locations and the Citadel Tower of David presented itself as an extraordinary location for such a project. When Izzika died shortly after, I flew to Jerusalem for his memorial service, and met Shosh Yaniv the museum director, and she gave me a tour of the Citadel. I was overwhelmed with the Citadel and Jerusalem, which I had visited once before in 1962. Shosh and I were determined to find a way to do this project in Izzika's memory." --Chihuly With large, jagged glass crystals fused onto cylinders, the Jerusalem Cylinders series presents a difficult challenge to produce, requiring careful choreography within the hotshop. These bold, chunky forms are inspired by the massive walls of the Citadel in Jerusalem, commemorating the Chihuly in the Light of Jerusalem 2000 exhibition. Born in Tacoma, Washington, Dale Chihuly became the most famous ornate glass maker of the late 20th century in America. He received a B.A. degree from the University of Washington at Seattle and an M.F.A. in 1968 from the Rhode Island School of Design. From 1967 to 1980, he was Chairman there of the Department of Glassblowing. In 1971, he was a co-founder of the Pilchuck Glass Center in Stanwood, Washington near Seattle. His colorful, abstract blown glass has made him nationally famous, and one of his biggest projects has likely been the thirty-five foot high, 550 foot long pedestrian bridge in Tacoma, Washington. It has five tall glass pavilions with eight- million dollars worth of Chihuly glass...
