Fiona Carver More Prints
Fiona Carver is a painter and printmaker from the Rutland and Leicestershire border. She trained at Edinburgh College of Art graduating with a BA Hons in 1999 and now creates contemporary oil paintings and linocuts of the land and sea. Carver is interested in capturing an impression of a place, the atmosphere, colors and emotion experienced at that time. Her paintings are completed mostly en plein air meaning they are painted outdoors, usually in one sitting. That way Carver can capture the light and weather, getting the brush marks down before it changes. The challenges of painting in wind or rain, with moving subjects and changing views add to the exhilaration of finishing a painting, stepping back, stretching and absorbing what is on the canvas. The process of creating a linocut makes a nice contrast for Carver with it’s slow, methodical planning. She cuts multiple blocks for each print, one for each color and layers them to build up the image. She usually has a good idea of what the finished piece will look like but this can change as the image progresses and Carver will often adapt it as she goes along. She is interested in the process of etched lino and experiments with this to create texture and energy in her practice. She has exhibited around the country and her linocuts have appeared on the cover of Country Living Magazine.

Artists Statement
Since starting to paint in 1981 my mainly plein aire landscapes have used a mechanical, rather than lyrical or painterly, approach. This probably puts my observational paint – by – numbers pictures at a creative and expressive disadvantage. But it doers prove conducive to a structural or compositional kind of drawing over which are applied layers of oil paint to deliver idiosyncratic textural and atmospheric effects. Furthermore, a Ben Nicholson – inspired dichotomy between foreground rooftops or architecture and a naturalistic marine or landscape background makes a chosen plastic and temperamental approach apt.
So when in 2004 I was inspired by the much loved master relief printmaker John Liddell 1925-2005) to try my hand at linocut I found a process ideally suited to my mechanical bent it has been a love affair ever since. The workshop he founded in 1991 Poole Printmakers is a safe haven, an intimate co-operative near Poole Quay, and some of the most scenic terrain in Britain. It is also an area where my art career started in 1978 and inspired my early book Art in Poole and Dorset, published by Poole Historical Trust, 1987.
