Founders Furniture Company

American

Founders Furniture Company was a short-lived 20th-century American brand that produced enduring mid-century modern designs. The company's streamlined dressers, lounge chairs and coffee tables feature solid wood construction and simple but elegant designs.

The history of Founders Furniture Company began in 1946 when it was established as a subsidiary of Knoll Inc., an esteemed manufacturer known mainly at the time for its pioneering workplace furniture — largely owing to the work of visionary designer Florence Knoll — so it launched Founders as its residential division.

During its years of operation, Founders hired celebrated American modernist designers like Milo Baughman and David Parmelee, who created sleek commodes and sideboards in mahogany and rosewood for the brand. Michigan native Jack Cartwright, a designer at Heritage during the 1950s, also worked at Founders as head designer before moving on to start his eponymous furniture company in 1963.

Founders continued operations until 1965 when Thomasville Furniture acquired it. Established in 1904 in North Carolina — home to other iconic mid-century brands such as Drexel and Broyhill — Thomasville expanded significantly during the 1960s and purchased several other American furniture manufacturers.

Today, the timeless styles and exceptional craftsmanship associated with Founders Furniture Company pieces continue to render them desirable even for today’s interiors.

2 MCM Founders Furn Side Tables Black Brass Sabots Coronado Group Luther Draper
By Founders Furniture Company
Located in Topeka, KS
Wonderful pair of vintage mid-century modern side tables or end tables. One straight table and one step table from the Coronado Group by Luther Draper for Founders Furniture comprised of hardwood, brass sabots, and black satin painted finish. Beautiful vintage condition. Both tables have been completely restored; however, may still retain small insignificant signs of their vintage patina. Please see photos and zoom in for details. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa 1955. NOTE- We have listed here as well, if they are still available, an additional pair of corner step tables in this same style but with a satin finish. Although their sheens are different, they would be very complimentary to each other. These tables are much like “that little black dress,” they just go with anything, and they look stunning!! One side table and one step table designed by Luther Draper in 1955 as part of the Coronado Group for Founders Furniture. Aren’t they FABULOUS? Their straight legs and simple design are classic mid-century modern but versatile enough to go with many other design styles. Both are rectangle and comprised of luscious hardwood with time-honored back beveled edges. The step table’s primary surface is a bit shorter than the side table’s surface, but the upper tiered step is at the same height, so when combined they complement each other nicely. The legs are long, square, and straight with cross stretchers and gorgeous brass sabots on all the feet. The original black finish has been beautifully refreshed, and they have a silky satin finish. They will add the perfect mid-century modern touch to any room in which you wish to place them. We truly love these wonderful tables, and they are sure to be your new favorites too. Founders Furniture was started in 1947 as a subsidiary of the esteemed Knoll International for their residential line and then merged with Thomasville Furniture in 1965. It is said that Luther Draper designed for the whose-who of high caliber furniture companies in the mid-century. He designed The Coronado Group collection for Founders Furniture in 1955. MCM 3 Walnut Cube Stools Black Upholstered Tops Jack Cartwright for Founders
By Jack Cartwright, Founders Furniture Company
Located in Topeka, KS
Amazing Mid-Century Modern trio of square walnut cube stools number 42102-01 with black faux leather upholstered tops by Jack Cartwright for Founders Furniture’s Patterns 7 line. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that these are vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear. One seat cushion has a repair to its underside, one stool has a scratch to one side, and another stool has a repair to one corner. Please see photos and zoom in for details. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, Mid-20th Century. Propriotor’s note: Although these stools are not marked with a maker’s name, they are stamped inside with the number 42102-01. My 30-year experience in the vintage furniture business lead me to believe they were Founder’s Furniture and with the help of a great FB Group I was able to find this number, without the -01, in one of their catalogs for Patterns 7 designed by Jack Cartwright. It is the number for a fabulous Founder’s Furniture cube side table which looks exactly like these stools apart from the padded removable seats and the measurements are the same. My feeling, as well as some of the experts, that these were a factory special order or undocumented offering using the existing side table as the base and adding the cushion. However, I cannot document that thought. They could have been something someone did themselves, but I do not think that as they are too factory-made in my opinion. What a terriffic trio!!!! Triple your pleasure with this outstanding trio of square walnut cube stools designed by Jack Cartwright for Founders Furniture Patterns 7 line!! They are FABUOLUS!! The tops are comprised of black faux leather and the back of the tops have silver snaps that snap on and off of the top of the cube, it’s nice for cleaning purposes. Also, you can see in the photos that the underneath of the tops is a bit different… one has full faux leather upholstery, and a small repair has been made. The other two have fabric backs. It’s the way we obtained them, and you can’t see that when the tops are snapped on. They are hollow in the center and would obviously make handy foot stools however, we are more inclined to see them used as extra seating. You could use all 3 together as a bench or fireside stools...

Mod MCM Table by Milo Baughman & TC & 2 Chairs by Founders Furniture Red & White
By Thayer Coggin, Milo Baughman, Founders Furniture Company
Located in Topeka, KS
Fabulous mod style MCM (mid-century modern) 1967 dining or game table from the New Design Idiom line by Milo Baughman for Thayer Coggin comprised of red vinyl base and white laminate top table, and 2 slipper chairs by Founders Furniture. Chairs have been reupholstered in a neoprene bonded sponge waterproof wet suit fabric by Big Z Fabric. Wonderful vintage condition. The laminate top has been cleaned and polished but two small rust spots remain. The vinyl is in beautiful shape and the chairs have been reupholstered. Please see photos. We try to show flaws. Circa, 1967-1971. NOTE: Due to photography/studio lighting color accuracy between the red vinyl on the chairs compared to the table base may be slightly different. The chairs are a bit lighter red than the table base. Does it really get any cooler than Mod style slipper chairs with RED wet suit fabric??? WELL… YES! Especially when you pair them with a FANTASTIC 1967 New Design Idiom table by Milo Baughman for Thayer Coggin!!! We are in LOVE with this awesome mid-century modern table and chairs set. First, these scoop style chairs are beautifully reupholstered in a neoprene bonded sponge waterproof wet suit fabric from Big Z Fabric…AND it’s 3 MM thick with buttons! SO COOL… The scoop design allows for a deep sitting experience that is comfortable and oh-so-full-of-style! And that’s not all!! This table!! WOW, it has a round white laminate top, and the base is pedestal or barrel style, and it is covered in its original fabulous smooth red vinyl fabric! When eclectic partnerships such as Milo Baughman and Thayer Coggin come together and create, it results in furniture with style and presence that is simply unmatchable and highly sought after. And, Founders Furniture had been a division of Thomasville Furniture since 1965. This table and chairs set would be perfect in a sitting room or lounge area or even a breakfast nook! Want to add a little something groovy to your home? You just found it!! One of the most remarkable partnerships in the mid-century modern to modern design world was the phenomenal furniture making duo of Milo Baughman and Thayer Coggin. Milo Baughman, a 20th Century genius of design, was born in Western Kansas in 1923 but was moved a year later by his family to Long Beach, California. He created Milo Baughman Design Inc. in 1947 and began designing interiors and furniture. Thayer Coggin was born in 1922 in Denton, North Carolina. Twelve years later his family moved 25 miles north to High Point where he grew up surrounded by furniture manufacturing. Thayer’s first love was furniture and Milo’s was design. So, together in 1953, after the two met, history was made in American furniture making by one of the greatest collaborations in the industry. During his career and before his death in 2003, Milo did design for several other companies as well as his own, but it is his collaboration with Thayer Coggin that is most impressive and sought-after today. Thayer Coggin, Inc. is still in business today even after its namesake’s death and is still offering classic selections from the late Baughman’s designs. Founders Furniture began as an independent company in 1947. The president was Edward Thrower. They merged with Thomasville Furniture in 1965 and were sold after to the Armstrong Group. Founders Furniture Company pieces are highly sought after today. High quality, classic style, and iconic manufacturers! This set including the 1967 New Design Idiom Table by Milo Baughman for Thayer Coggin AND two red slipper chairs...

Founders Furniture Burled Wood and Smoke Glass Wall Unit Display Cabinet Lighted
By Milo Baughman, Thomasville, Founders Furniture Company
Located in Topeka, KS
Handsome wall unit lighted display cabinet in a light burled wood veneer and smoked glass doors with brass trim and handles by Founders Furniture. This piece is in good vintage condition. It does have some dings and small flaws as you would expect with age but nothing major, circa 1979. This is an incredibly beautiful cabinet circa 1979! Made of a light colored burlwood with some bird’s-eye effect. We thought at first it was maple but could be ash. Regardless of which, it is gorgeous. The cabinet is comprised of two sections, an upper and a lower. The lower third consists of three equal sized burl veneer drawers in the center flanked by two full smoked glass doors with brass hinges and finger pulls. There is a brass-tone one-inch trim piece on the face bordering the doors and drawers. The upper two thirds consist of four equal sized vertical doors. The two in the center are burled wood which are flanked by two full smoked glass doors with brass hinges and small finger pulls. The burlwood doors...

Questions About Founders Furniture Company
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 27, 2024
The difference between mid-century and mid-century modern comes down to specificity. When it comes to furniture and architecture, for example, mid-century refers to works that emerged during the middle of the 20th century, usually between 1950 and 1970. The more specific descriptor, mid-century modern, is used to refer to a particular style of design that emphasizes simplicity, organic forms and clean lines. Mid-century modern furniture designers generally drew on the architectural work of Frank Lloyd Wright, Bauhaus design, Scandinavian modernism and more. Any piece of furniture produced during the 1950s and ’60s can be referred to as mid-century, but only those with specific characteristics are mid-century modern. That said, when enthusiasts of furniture and architecture use the shorter of the two phrases, they may indeed be referring to modernist works created during that period in history. On 1stDibs, find a wide variety of mid-century modern furniture.

What happened to the Drexel Heritage furniture company was that the brand went out of business. In 2014, the last plant operated by Drexel Heritage — known to mid-century modern furniture collectors as Drexel Furniture — closed its doors. The North Carolina company rebranded as Drexel in 2017. Then, in 2018, the Heritage Home Group, which was formed years earlier by an equity investor called KPS Capital Partners when it acquired Drexel Heritage and other manufacturers such as Lane and Broyhill, filed for bankruptcy and ceased operations. Production of Drexel furniture never resumed.
