Hyunmee Lee Art

Korean, b. 1961

Hyunmee Lee was born in Seoul, Korea, where she grew up practising Western Modern art with experience in Eastern painting and calligraphy. Her art practice crosses three continents over two decades. Lee graduated from the Hongik University majoring in painting. At the end of that year, she moved to Australia. She stayed there for six years and achieved two post-graduate degrees and exhibited in her first commercial gallery, Bonython-Meodemore Gallery, Sydney. At the same time, her work was exposed through a contemporary art book Art Four.

"Inland Island #59" Yellow Gestural Abstract Acrylic on Canvas Painting
By Hyunmee Lee
Located in Baltimore, MD
This piece by Hyunmee Lee is framed. The price reflects the framed piece. Unframed dimensions: 60 x 60 inches. "My art practice crosses three continents over two decades. The works consider the images and ideas that mark my journey into the spiritual and cultural dimensions of painting as a creative activity. During a period when I have carried adventurous journeys across several different social and geographic divides, I began to search deeper for an understanding of who I am, and where I am. My paintings started to explore the idea of self as the most fundamental element of human nature; I tried to seek my identity as I examined human nature." Hyunmee Lee was born in Seoul Korea, where she grew up practicing Western Modern art with experience in Eastern painting...

Inland Crossing 35
By Hyunmee Lee
Located in Salt Lake City, UT
The gestural paintings of Hyunmee Lee are sumptuously minimal. Rich forms advance from buttery canvases like an abstract garden. Gauzy veils of paint hover like soft air against the ebony weight of matter. Light peeks through translucent shapes like sunlight illuminating soft mist. Texture swirls and echoes across the canvas as if carved by waves or eroded by the wind. The viewer, invited into a realm of contemplation and meditation, is surprised to look away and see the physical world existing in only three dimensions. But perhaps that is precisely the experience the artist would like the viewer to have. In her current exhibition, Touch, on display at the Phillips Gallery...
