Jean Michel Folon Abstract Prints
Belgian, 1934-2005
Jean-Michel Folon was a Belgian artist, illustrator, painter, and sculptor.
He was born on 1 March 1934 in Uccle, Brussels, Belgium in 1934. He studied architecture at the Institut Saint-Luc.
Jean-Michel Folon became internationally known in the 1960s for his illustrations of works by famous artists such as Franz Kafka and Boris Vian, and for his poster and advertisement designs. Among other things, the Olivetti (typewriter) advertising campaigns of the 1950s and 1960s are marked by his signature and have been included in numerous poster collections. In addition, he sketched a wide variety of newspaper and magazine articles (including Time magazine) with his illustrations accompanying the topics, which were often used as covers. His pictures are often laid out in a light and subtle as well as surrealistic-melancholic watercolour and pen technique.
Folon's works, watercolours, sculptures and paintings have been exhibited in all the world's renowned museums.(Biography provided by Le Coin des Arts)

Giclée print on Archival Cotton Paper. Acid and Lignin-free.
The painting is a limited edition Giclée print, created using high-quality archival cotton paper, ensuring its longevity and preserving the intricate details of the artwork. The central image of the composition features a butterfly, but instead of traditional organic patterns, it is formed by a captivating arrangement of geometric figures.
The butterfly serves as the focal point of the painting, capturing the viewer's attention with its bold and vibrant colors. Shades of fuchsia, blue, orange, green, white, black, yellow, and light blue interplay harmoniously, creating a visually striking and energetic composition.
Upon closer inspection, one can discern that the butterfly's wings are constructed using a meticulous arrangement of various geometric shapes.
As the viewer's gaze explores the painting, they may notice that within the composition, there are additional elements arranged in the form of eyes. These eyes, composed of circles of varying sizes and triangles, lend an intriguing depth and surreal quality to the artwork. They evoke a sense of introspection and invite contemplation about the interplay of perception and reality.

By Yutaka Takayanagi.
Medium - Relief and lithographic print
Edition - 5/20
Signed - Yes
Size - 510mm x 660mm
Date - 1978
Condition - Excellent. 10 out of 10.
Born in Tokyo in 1941, Takayanagi's artistic journey began when he enrolled at Tokyo University of the Arts in 1960, studying under the renowned oil painter Kaoru Yamaguchi. His talent was quickly recognized when he received an Honorable Mention at the 8th Shell Arts Award Exhibition in the same year.
During his time at university, Takayanagi took an intensive course in copper plate printing under Tetsuro Komai, receiving his degree from the graduate school in 1966. Fascinated by the simultaneous color print method, he started creating copperplate prints and soon gained recognition for his unique metallic reliefs, which he produced using collages of English newspapers.
Takayanagi's passion for experimentation led him to create metallic emboss reliefs using his own photographs, and in the latter half of the 1980s, he moved on to silkscreen prints. He continued to push the boundaries of his art, constantly exploring new techniques and mediums.
In 1978 and the following year, Takayanagi was appointed as an arts researcher for the Ministry of Culture and traveled to the United States, France, and the UK. These experiences enriched his artistic perspective and further cemented his reputation as a highly regarded artist.
Takayanagi was part of the influential printmaking group Sosaku Hanga, which emerged in the early 20th century in Japan. This movement emphasized the artist's involvement in every stage of the printmaking process, from designing the image to carving and printing the blocks.
Takayanagi's work often incorporates elements of nature and landscape, with an emphasis on texture and pattern. He also experimented with collage, incorporating found materials like newspaper clippings and photographs into his prints.
Takayanagi's work has been exhibited extensively in Japan and internationally, including at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo. He has also received numerous awards for his contributions to printmaking, including the Japan Print Association Award and the Purple Ribbon Medal...

Biography:
Jean-Michel Folon (1 March 1934–20 October 2005) was a Belgian artist, illustrator, painter, and sculptor. Folon was born in Uccle, Brussels, Belgium in 1934 where he studied architecture at the Institut Saint-Luc. In 1955 he settled in a gardener’s house in the outskirts of Paris. Over a period of five years he drew morning, noon and night. In 1985 he moved to Monaco where he worked in a large workshop surrounded by numerous artists.
The first exhibition of his watercolors was in New York in 1969 in the Lefebre Gallery. One year later he exhibited in Tokyo and in the Il Milione gallery in Milan. He also participated in the XXVth Venice Biennale. In 1973 he joined the selection of Belgian artists in the XXVth São Paulo Biennale, where he was granted the Grand Prize in Painting. Over the years his work concentrated on different techniques, including watercolor, etching, silkscreen, illustrations, mosaics, and stained glass, which showed the diversity of his art. He also designed numerous posters, often for humanitarian causes. Around 1988 he created his first sculptures made out of wood. He then moved on to creating sculptures in clay, plaster, bronze and marble, while continuing to paint.
Several museums dedicated exhibitions to him, among them the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris in 1971, the Boymans van Beuningen in Rotterdam in 1976, the Institute of Contemporary Art in London in 1977, the Musée Picasso in Antibes...
