Kai Kristiansen Furniture

Danish, b. 1929

With a passion for math and engineering, Kai Kristiansen has created high-quality wood furniture for decades. Beginning in the 1950s, his chairs, modular shelving and other furnishings were made in the style that would become internationally renowned as Danish modern and boasted clean lines, perfected functionality and exacting craftsmanship.

Born in Denmark, Kristiansen trained in cabinetmaking before studying with Kaare Klint, often cited as the “father of modern Danish design,” at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. At just 26 years old, Kristiansen opened his own studio.

Kristiansen had his mid-century breakthrough in 1956 with the Chair #42, which he made with Schou Andersen. Unlike most other chairs at the time, Chair #42’s armrests, with their wealth of radical angles, were connected to the back rather than the front legs. This unconventional flourish makes the backrest appear as though it is floating in midair above the seat.

Kristiansen’s next innovation was a modular wall system in 1957 — three years ahead of Dieter Rams’s more famous 606 Universal Shelving System. Called the Reolsystem Wall Unit, produced by SB Feldballes Møbelfabrik, it’s also known as the FM Wall Unit as FM/Fornem Møbelkunst began producing it in the 1960s.

Kristiansen would go on to work with other leading Danish furniture manufacturers such as Magnus Olesen, Fritz Hansen and Vildbjerg Møbelfabrik, designing everything from chairs and desks to sideboards and cabinets, frequently in rosewood and teak. (The latter was a sought-after wood by Scandinavian modern designers.)

While many of Kristiansen’s timeless designs remain in production, such as his Paper Knife sofa, which was reintroduced by Miyazaki Chair Factory in 2008, and his 1950s Entré collection, which was relaunched with Great Dane Furniture in 2016, others are prized as vintage mid-century pieces.

Today, Kristiansen is still at work on new furniture with an expert eye to thoughtfully functional designs that are made to last.

Rosewood and Aluminum Desk by Kai Kristiansen for Feldballes Møbelfabrik, 1960s
By Kai Kristiansen, Feldballes Møbelfabrik
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This gorgeous Rosewood and Aluminum desk by Kai Kristiansen for Feldballes Møbelfabrik was designed and produced in the 1960s, Denmark, and features incredible Brazilian Rosewood with vivid exotic grain which was beautifully refinished in a French Polish lacquer, the most expensive and laborious process which achieves the most luxurious results. French Polish requires many hand applied coats which provides a strong and hard protective surface suitable for regular daily use while giving a clear and thick glass-like surface that accentuates and exemplifies the exotic wood grain. This freestanding desk floats on top of two structural legs finished with aluminum capped feet which also match the drawer handles on the six pull out drawers. On the backside of the desk are three cubby spaces with ample room to store your favorite books, picture frames or family kick-knacks and tchotchkes. This exotic 1960s Rosewood desk by Kai Kristiansen produced by Feldballes Mobelfabrik, which design has also been attributed to Ejgil Petersen...

Mirror "No. 146" by Kai Kristiansen for Aksel Kjersgaard Odder, Denmark, 1960s
By Aksel Kjersgaard, Kai Kristiansen
Located in Utrecht, NL
This mirror is from the famed “Hallmöbel” (Hall furniture) series by Danish designer Kai Kristiansen. With an overall look and details that represent mid-century Danish Modernism, this “No. 146” mirror is rooted in tradition. As it can be expected from Kai Kristiansen, this mirror reflects the Danish traditions of timelessness and quality. This sizeable model follows the understated yet well-though out design principles of Kristiansen with simple lines and visible joinery. The rectangular frame and the beautiful wood grain provide simple elegance, making this mirror perfect to bring some understated modernism to any space. The mirror is numbered with ‘146’ as well as with the manufacturer’s stamp. Aksel Kjersgaard has been well known for their continuing manufacturing of modern furniture designed by leading Danish architects in the best carpentry design. The furniture factory was founded in 1952 by master carpenter Aksel Kjersgaard and in 1955, the production of entrance furniture and small furniture began. In the case of this pair, the wood was selected with great care and consideration and was sorted so that colour and structure match together in the individual pieces. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Some marks and scratches on the wood. Dimensions: 21.85 in W x 1.18 in D x 40.94 in H 55.5 cm W x 3 cm D x 104 cm H About the designer: Designer Kai Kristiansen was born in 1929 in Denmark. He apprenticed in cabinetmaking before he in 1948 enrolled in the prestigious Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen under the highly influential designer Kaare Klint. At the age of only 26, Kristiansen opened his own studio and began to create furniture in what would soon become known as the Danish modern style. His designs would be produced by well-known Danish manufacturers, such as Feldballes Møbelfabrik, Fornem Møbelkunst, Fritz Hansen, Vildbjerg Møbelfabrik and Magnus Olesen. Best known for his smooth and geometric Mid-Century Modern cabinets, tables, and dining chairs. Working in oak, teak, and rosewood, the designer produced popular, pioneering pieces including the cabinets, chairs and diverse furniture for halls. The designer opened his own office in Copenhagen in 1955, a space he shared with his contemporary Illum Wikkelsø in the 1970s. Thanks to the FM system...
