Luigi Montanarini Abstract Prints

Italian, 1906-1998

Luigi Montanarini’s artistic career started a little by chance when, in 1925, during one of his frequent visits to the Uffizi, he met the painter Maurice Denis and in the same year he made his first stay in France. In 1927, Montanarini attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence and began the artistic and emotional bond with Felice Carena, his teacher of painting. He immediately showed great passion and love for the classics and the masters of the 19th century, from Courbet to Paul Cézanne and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. After graduating from the academy, Montanarini made his second trip to Europe. He visited the Netherlands twice and renewed his interest in Rubens, Van Gogh and Rembrandt. Later, he visited Zurich and returned to Paris, where he met Gino Severini and attended Alberto Magnelli, Picasso and had fertile intellectual exchanges with Jacques Villon and Alfred Manessier. Montanarini adheres to the Roman School (Novecento) together with which he exhibits at the La Cometa Gallery in Rome. The following year, at the end of the war, he founded together with Pericle Fazzini, Enrico Prampolini, Joseph Jarema and Virgilio Guzzi, the Art Club based in Via Margutta. Montanarini met and attended Lionello Venturi, returned to Italy after the exile of the Fascist period. The year 1956 marks the beginning of its informal period and in 1965, Montanarini became director of the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome and a member of UNESCO, which he held until 1976.

Among the 300 albums[3] are the covers of Magical Mystery Tour by the Beatles, Crown of Creation by Jefferson Airplane, Exile on Main Street by the Rolling Stones, and Hotter Than Hell by Kiss. His first major assignment, in 1963, was designing the poster for the surf film The Endless Summer, after which he served as Capitol Records' head of design from 1965 to 1968. During that time, he worked on the artwork for albums by Capitol artists such as the Beatles and the Beach Boys.[5] He also oversaw the design of the psychedelic posters for the Pinnacle Shrine exposition.[6] The Endless Summer The Endless Summer (John Van Hamersveld illustration) In 1963, Van Hamersveld was hired by director and filmmaker Bruce Brown to design the iconic Endless Summer movie poster using a photograph taken by Bob Bagley, general manager and camera man for Bruce Brown Films. Andersen (Printer) Philip Barber (Printer) Hang Nguyen (Printer) Stephanie Nowack (Printer) Michael Reid (Printer) Daniel Rounds (Printer) Vermillion Editions Limited (Publisher) Sam Gilliam Biography: Sam Gilliam was one of the great innovators in postwar American painting. He emerged from the Washington, D.C. scene in the mid 1960s with works that elaborated upon and disrupted the ethos of Color School painting. A series of formal breakthroughs would soon result in his canonical Drape paintings, which expanded upon the tenets of Abstract Expressionism in entirely new ways. Suspending stretcherless lengths of painted canvas from the walls or ceilings of exhibition spaces, Gilliam transformed his medium and the contexts in which it was viewed. As an artist in the nation’s capital at the height of the Civil Rights Movement, this was not merely an aesthetic proposition; it was a way of defining art’s role in a society undergoing dramatic change. Gilliam pursued a pioneering course in which experimentation was the only constant. Inspired by the improvisatory ethos of jazz, his lyrical abstractions took on an increasing variety of forms, moods, and materials. In addition to a traveling retrospective organized by the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. in 2005, Sam Gilliam was the subject of solo exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (1971); The Studio Museum in Harlem, New York (1982); Whitney Museum of American Art, Philip Morris Branch, New York (1993); J.B. Speed Memorial Museum, Louisville, Kentucky (1996); Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C. (2011); and Kunstmuseum Basel, Switzerland (2018), among many other institutions. A semi-permanent installation of Gilliam’s paintings opened at Dia:Beacon in August 2019. His work is included in over fifty public collections, including those of the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris; Tate Modern, London; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; and the Art Institute of Chicago. She received a BFA from Carnegie Institute of Technology, Pittsburgh, PA in 1964 and an MFA from Columbia University in 1967. Kozloff was a major figure in both the Pattern and Decoration and the Feminist art movements of the 1970s. In 1979, she began to focus on public art, increasing the scale of her installations and expanding the accessibility of her art to reach a wider audience. Kozloff has since executed a number of major commissions in public spaces, including Dreaming: The Passage of Time for the United States Consulate, Art in Embassies Program in Istanbul, Turkey; The Movies: Fantasies and Spectacles for the Los Angeles Metro’s Seventh and Flower Station, CA; Caribbean Festival Arts for P.S. 218, New York, NY; New England Decorative Arts for the Harvard Square Subway Station, Cambridge, MA; and Bay Area Victorian, Bay Area Deco, Bay Area Funk for the International Terminal, San Francisco Airport, CA. Since the early 1990s, Kozloff has utilized mapping as a device for consolidating her enduring interests in history, culture, and the decorative and popular arts. She initially concentrated on cities known to her, onto which patterns and images reflecting their colonial pasts were then overlaid. Subsequent series examined bodies of water and the inaccuracies of early maps from the so-called “Age of Discovery.” In 1999-2000, Kozloff was awarded the Jules Guerin Fellowship / Rome Prize from the American Academy in Rome, Italy. During her yearlong residency abroad Kozloff conceived and completed Targets, a nine-foot walk-in globe in twenty-four sections, each of which is painted with an aerial map of a place that has been bombed by the U.S. in the years since World War II. A 2001 residency at the Bogliasco Foundation in Liguria, Italy provided the genesis for Boy's Art, a series of twenty-four collaged drawings based on maps, diagrams, and illustrations of historic battles...

Abstract Composition - Screen Print by Luigi Montanarini - 1970s

Geometries is a beautiful original screen print, realized by the Italian artist Luigi Montanarini (1906-1998), published by La Nuova Foglio, a publishing house of Macerata, Italy, as the dry-stamp points on the lower right corner of the sheet. Hand-signed and numbered in pencil on the lower margin. From a rare edition of La Nuova Foglio edition of 23/50 prints. In very good conditions. This contemporary and Informal artwork, representing a synthetic colorful abstract composition, shows how Montanarini frees the color from the geometric rigor in a bidimensional surface. Luigi Montanarini (Florence, 1906 - Rome, 1998) His artistic career started a little by chance when, in 1925, during one of his frequent visits to the Uffizi, he met the painter Maurice Denis and in the same year he stayed for the first time in France.
