Untitled (Tondo) A
By Leon Polk Smith
Located in New York, NY
Leon Polk Smith (1906 -1996) holds a unique place in a long tradition of American geometric abstract painting. Born near Chikasha, a Native American territory later annexed by the U.S. as the state of Oklahoma, Smith’s parents, who were of Cherokee ancestry, raised him with both a strong sense of his heritage and an abiding respect for the land. Art would eventually draw Smith to New York where he would quickly embrace elements of geometric abstraction in his work. Many of Smith’s hard-edge compositions could be viewed as distillations of imagery drawn from the Oklahoma landscape...

Broadway Jump
By Martin Canin
Located in New York, NY
Martin Canin is an American artist known for his intense color field and abstract geometric paintings. Color is freed from objective context and becomes the subject in itself. Though at first it would be easy to assimilate his paintings to the work of color field artists like Barnett Newman or Jack Bush, Canin’s large oil paint canvases maintain a distinctive lyrical aspect that separate them from pure geometry and plunge them into a subtle psychological realm. This painting is part of a series from which just a few pieces are left. Canin created a vibrant color field of pink, orange and blue colors. The rigorousness of the geometry is broken up the intense vibrating sensation created by the color combination. The calibrated juxtaposition of the intense colors create the impression of internal glowing light, almost like a painted version of a Dan Flavin work with fluorescent light fixtures...
