Mimmo Paladino Prints and Multiples
Italian, b. 1948
Mimmo Paladino (b. 1948, Italy) played a central role in the development of the Transavantgarde movement alongside Sandro Chia and Francesco Clemente. Regarded as the Italian version of Neo-Expressionism, Transavantgarde revived the emotion, figuration and mysticism in art. Paladino’s sculptures, paintings and prints often reference past art historical traditions, modernizing iconography with distinct, graceful elongation. Paladino attended the Benevento Art High School, where he was influenced by Pop artists Claes Oldenburg and Jim Dine. The artist has exhibited internationally, including at the 1980 Venice Biennale and the 1982 documenta VII. His work can be found in prominent collections worldwide, notably the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden (Washington, D.C), Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), Museum of Fine Arts (Houston) and Tate Modern (London).(Biography provided by Zane Bennett Contemporary Art)

Mimmo Paladino is an Italian contemporary sculptor, painter, muralist and printmaker. He attended the Liceo Artistico di Benvenuto (Benevento Art School) from 1964 to 1968, when minimalism and conceptualism dominated the international art scene, which had effects on his art. He was also a part of Transavantgarde – the artistic movement with the neo-expressionist resurgence that swept through Italy in the 1980s. Paladino seeks his inspiration from both the ancient and the modern – from Egyptian, tribal, and classical artworks to the modern painting and sculpture. In his compositions we can often see a figure in combination with the signs like crosses, and techniques like the application of gold leaves, a symbol of eternity, borrowed from Christian iconography, as well as the hieratic pose of Byzantine figures and the gestural quality of that culture’s rites. Knox Martin (1923-2022) was an esteemed New York School painter.
Knox Martin was born in 1923 in Barranquilla, Colombia. He was the son of the aviator, painter, and poet William Knox Martin, the first man to fly over the Andes mountains.
After serving in World War II, Knox Martin attended the Art Students League of New York on the G.I. Bill from 1946-1950, where he studied with Harry Sternberg, Vaclav Vytlacil, Will Barnet, and Morris Kantor.
In 1954, Knox Martin's friend Franz Kline placed a painting of his in the Stable Gallery Annual.
Charles Egan of the renowned Charles Egan Gallery saw Knox Martin's painting at the Stable Gallery and asked Martin to show his work in a one-man show for the tenth anniversary of the Egan Gallery.
