Paul Landacre Landscape Prints

American, 1893-1963
Paul Landacre was an illustrator who specialized in wood engravings of naturalistic images executed in a sparse, rhythmic, linear style. Born in Columbus, Ohio, he was an athlete as a youth. During his sophomore year at Ohio State University, he contracted a life-threatening illness that left him partially disabled. During this same year he also enrolled in a drawing class. After a long recuperation, Landacre moved with his family to California. In order to increase his physical strength he took long walks in the nearby rural areas, and on these walks, drew in his sketchbook. By 1918 he found a job as a commercial illustrator. In 1923 he enrolled at the Otis Art Institute, where he studied all types of media, including wood engraving. Landacre's artistic reputation began to emerge in the early 1930s with the publication of his book California Hills and other Wood Engravings and his first one-person exhibition in Los Angeles. He received many commissions for book illustrations; since he worked in a careful, deliberate manner, his large projects required years to complete. For thirty-one years the artist maintained a hand press in his home, allowing him to have total control over the printing of his designs. In 1939 he was made an associate of the National Academy of Design. The remainder of Landacre's professional career was balanced between teaching and illustrating books. Two examples from the National Gallery's permanent collection demonstrate the range of Landacre's work. His engraving, Smoke Tree, evokes the nearby desert scenery that the artist knew. The sharp, angular canyons of the mountain contrast with the delicate, small-leafed tree in the foreground. Some Ingredients is a still life composition that displays the same strength of line, forceful contrasts, and textures seen in his landscapes. 1870 View of Proposed Brooklyn Bridge and New York City
By Theodore R. Davis
Located in Alamo, CA
This framed engraving entitled "Birds-eye View of the Southern End of New York and Brooklyn, Showing the Projected Suspension-Bridge Over the East River, From the Western Terminus in Printing-House Square, New York" by Theodore R. Davis (1840–1894) was published as a supplement of Harper's Weekly, November 19, 1870. The print is presented in a maple frame and a double mat. The frame measures 23.5" high, 29" wide and 0.75" deep. There is a vertical center fold and additional vertical lines, where wood engraving blocks were joined for the printing process. It is in excellent condition. This framed image depicting New York in 1870 was a centerfold for the November 19, 1870 issue of Harper's Weekly. It includes the site and eventual appearance of the East River New York-Brooklyn Bridge; the name later shortened to the Brooklyn Bridge. The print was issued eleven months after the start of construction of the bridge on January 2, 1870, which would take another 12.5 years to complete. When this view was drawn, work on the bridge was all below ground, constructing the supports for the bridge’s towers. Labels in the upper portion of the print identify locations in the background including "Light Ship...

'Jones Island' original woodcut engraving by Gerrit Sinclair
By Gerrit Sinclair
Located in Milwaukee, WI
The print 'Jones Island' is something of a self portrait. In the image, an artist stands before and easel, depicting the docks and buildings on the coast. The title indicates that this is Jones Island in Milwaukee, the peninsula along Lake Michigan that today is home to largely industrial buildings. The buildings and figures in the print suggest that this might be a view of the last of the Kashubian or German immigrant settlements on the peninsula before they were evicted in the 1940s to make way for the development of the harbor. The artist in the image thus acts as a documentarian of these peoples. The careful line-work of the woodblock engraving adds a sense of expressionism to the scene, leaving the figures and buildings looking distraught and dirty, though the image nonetheless falls into the Social Realist category that dominated American artists during the Great Depression. This print was published in 1936 as part of the Wisconsin Artists' Calendar for the year 1937, which included 52 original, hand-made prints – one for each week of the year. 6 x 5 inches, image 10 x 7.13 inches, sheet 13.43 x 12.43 inches, frame Signed "GS" in the print block, upper left Entitled "Jones Island" lower left (covered by matting) Inscribed "Wood Engraving" lower center (covered by matting) Artist name "Gerrit V. Sinclair" lower right (covered by matting) Framed to conservation standards using 100 percent rag matting and museum glass, all housed in a silver gilded moulding. Gerrit Sinclair studied at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1910 - 1915, under Vanderpoel, Norton, and Walcott. In World War I, he served in the Army Ambulance Corps and later recorded his experiences in a series of oil paintings. He taught in Minneapolis before arriving in Milwaukee in 1920 to become a member of the original faculty of the Layton School of Art. He was also a member of the Wisconsin Painters & Sculptors. Sinclair's paintings and drawings were executed in a lyrical, representational style, usually expressing a mood rather than a narrative. His paintings reveal a great sensitivity for color and atmosphere. His subject matter focused on cityscapes, industrial valleys, and working-class neighborhoods, captured from eye-level. A decade before the popularity of Regionalism, Sinclair's strong interest in the community was reflected not only in his paintings, but also in his encouragement to students to return to their communities as artists and teachers. Joseph Friebert...

Fourteen superb, richly-inked impressions, printed from the original blocks, on cream wove paper, bound into book format. Including Landacre's acclaimed wood engravings 'Big Sur', 'Indio Mountains', 'Point Magu', 'Malibu Coast', 'Berkeley Stadium', 'San Bernadino Mountains', 'Monterey Hills', and others. Probably the best-known California illustrated book. Reference: Journal of Decorative and Propaganda Arts #7, Winter 1988. The first and most beautiful book illustrated by Landacre. Foreword by Los Angeles artist and critic Arthur Millier; printed directly from the original blocks by Harold Young. Published by Bruce McCallister, Los Angeles. With the original black paper-covered slipcase, wear to the slipcase edges and losses to the top and bottom open front edges. Wilson pasted to the inside front cover. Discreet owner inscription, in ink, in the top inside back cover. Overall a near fine copy of this extremely rare and fragile book. Book cover size 12 3/4 x 9 3/4 inches; image sizes, various; page size 12 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches. "Except in occasional engravings of buildings, Paul Landacre has confined all his efforts to hymning the 'eternal hills' and especially to searching out those qualities in them that prompt us to use the adjective eternal. He gradually evolved a conception of black lines and white lines - one kind passing easily and unnoticed into the other - which enable him to cut into wood the erosive flow which has given rhythmic form to hills and mountains." —Arthur Millier, from the Preface to 'California Hills'. Honored as one of the “Fifty Books of the Year” for 1931, by the American Institute of Graphic Arts, New York. Collections: Library of Congress, University of California Library (Irvine), William Andrews Clark...
