Pinton Furniture

French

For more than 150 years, the family-owned Pinton company has designed and created beautiful rugs, carpets and tapestries, establishing a reputation as one of the world’s foremost textile makers.

Although the Pinton family’s association with rug and tapestry making can be traced back to 1770, the company itself was established in 1867 by Olivier Pinton in the town of Felletin, France, located on the outskirts of Aubusson, which is famous for its tapestries.

In the following years, the company was passed down through several generations of the Pinton family, who used centuries-old handweaving techniques on a basse-lisse loom in the Felletin workshop to create tapestries. After World War I, the company collaborated with several important artists and designers, such as Alexander Calder, Le Corbusier and Fernand Léger, weaving impeccable tapestries based on their artworks. During the 1940s, Pinton expanded into designing and producing fitted carpets and hand-knotted and hand-tufted rugs.

Towards the end of the 20th century, the Pinton firm experienced a downturn. In 2002, with the company facing bankruptcy, Lucas Pinton was encouraged by his father, François, to take over the business. At the time, Lucas was studying economics at the Université Paris-Panthéon-Assas and had little knowledge of his family’s renowned tapestry and rug-making heritage. His discovery of old letters and photographs taken during the firm’s heyday fueled his desire to reconnect with his family history. He dedicated himself to the company’s rebirth as Maison Pinton.

Today, Maison Pinton collaborates with major contemporary artists and designers like Marc Petit, Lionel Jadot, David Weeks, Ulrika Liljedahl, Julien Colombier and Jean Boggio to create Western European rugs and fine tapestries.

Maison Pinton pieces have been displayed at galleries and fairs worldwide, including the Venice Biennale, Art Basel and the FIAC International Contemporary Art Fair in Paris. Its rugs, carpets and tapestries are found in hotels, boutiques and private residences throughout Europe and the United States.
