Robert Mangold Prints and Multiples

American, b. 1937
Robert Mangold (born October 12, 1937) is an American minimalist artist. “Robert Mangold’s paintings,” wrote Michael Kimmelman in the New York Times in 1997, “are more complicated to describe than they seem, which is partly what’s good about them: the way they invite intense scrutiny, which, in the nature of good art, is its own reward.” His works are comprised often of simple elements which are put together through complex means. Mangold's work challenges the typical connotations of what a painting is or could be, and his works often appear as objects rather than images. Elements refer often to architectural elements or have the feeling of an architect's hands. He almost always works in extensive series, often carried through both paintings and works on paper.

Miss Prather's Class
By Winfred Rembert
Located in New York, NY
Color Reduction woodcut from 4 blocks with 4 silk screen colors and embossing on white Rives BFK paper Edition 28/30, Unframed MassArt welcomed artist Winfred Rembert for the 2014 Master Print Series, an artist in residency project during which, an established artist transforms an idea into physical artwork, and invites students to collaborate in the art-making process. A self-taught artist, Winfred Rembert records a painful chapter of American history in autobiographical paintings, created on hand-tooled and dyed leather, which explore the lives of African Americans in Jim Crow-era Georgia. After taking part in civil rights demonstrations, he survived a lynching only to be sent to prison to do hard labor on a chain gang. Another inmate taught him leatherworking and Rembert began depicting his past in engaging compositions and vibrant color. In many scenes, Rembert offers a raw view of racism, inequality, and violence while celebrating his community’s resilience in the face of such overwhelming injustice. Winfred Rembert also participated in the Adderley Lecture series, which features distinguished artists, historians, and writers and was established in 1995 in memory of Tyrone Maurice Adderley. Past Adderley lecturers have included Chakaia Booker, Melvin Edwards...

By Viola Burley Leak

Motif (Abstract) in orange abstract. From the small edition of 10. from 1982. I am not sure if this is a woodcut or woodblock print or a silkscreen screenprint or some combination. Viola Burley Leak, American (1944 - ) Viola Leak was born in Nashville, Tennessee, she received a B.A. in Art from Fisk University, a B.F.A. in Fashion Design from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, an M.A. from Hunter College, NY and an M.F.A. in Media from Howard University, Washington, DC. Leak was an art consultant for both the New York State Board of Education and the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Print Department, in addition to working for the Experimental Gallery of Art at the Smithsonian Institute. Her mixed media work often references religious motifs and those of her African-American experience and heritage. She is a multimedia artist, her works include printmaking, textile designing, soft sculpture, appliqué tapestries, doll making, and multi-media. Viola has studied with many renowned artists such as Aaron Douglas, Romare Bearden, Robert Blackburn, and Charles White. Her works can be found in the collections of World Federation of United Nations, New York State Office Building, Manufacturers of Hanover Trust Company, Atlanta Life Insurance Company and many more organizations. Viola's exhibition experience is extensive - more than 100 showings over a decade, national and international. Her quilts exude a miraculous and magical presence. They have traveled in two international shows and three national quilt projects in the past three years. A proud moment for her was being featured in the December 20, 2000 of the Smithsonian magazine; the article praised her mural "Afro Dance Scan" as one of the outstanding artworks in the "When the Spirit Moves: African American Dance...
