Roxanne Lowit Art

American, 1942-2022

Photographer Roxanne Lowit was at the forefront of recording modern culture for more than four decades. With her camera, she captured the grit within the glamor, bringing out the truest essence of each subject.

Lowit had no formal training in photography. She graduated from New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology with a degree in art history and textile design. She had a successful career as a designer, but also had a penchant for painting. Many people offered to sit for her paintings, but her busy schedule did not allow for lengthy sessions. Instead, she would take photographs to use as references when she had time to work on her art.

She enjoyed the instant gratification of producing an image through the lens. She began her photography practice in earnest at New York fashion shows, taking pictures of her own designs. Soon, models such as Jerry Hall were inviting her backstage to the shows. Her behind-the-scenes shots catapulted her into icon status in the fashion industry.

She later expanded her focus beyond fashion. Throughout her illustrious career, Lowit photographed world-famous cultural figures, like American Pop artist Andy Warhol, Spanish Surrealist painter Salvador Dalí and American singer Madonna.

Many prestigious venues have displayed Lowit’s work, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Andy Warhol Museum. Her work is part of the permanent collection of Japan’s Kobe Fashion Museum

The American, French, German and Italian editions of Vogue all included Lowit’s photographs on their pages, as did many other notable publications, including GQ and Vanity Fair. Lowit produced advertising work for many major companies, including Armani, De Beers and Land Rover. Lowit published four books of her photography, including Roxanne Lowit Photographs Yves Saint Laurent in 2014. She died in 2022.

After over three decades of celebrity and backstage photography Roxanne Lowit has become a star in her own right. Her work has left its mark, and her distinctive style has influenced the visual culture of an epoch. Her photographs are documents and historical records at the same time. Most of them black-and-white, they reveal quite clearly that Lowit is more interested in the inner world behind the glamorous façade. Her pictures smoothly combine glamour and the underlying spirit, countenance and atmosphere, surface detail with depth. This piece specifically documents the friendschip between big names of the 90s art...

All prints are limited edition. Available in multiple sizes. High-end framing on request. All prints are done and signed by the artist. The collector receives an additional certificate of authenticity from the gallery. Roxanne Lowit's backstage photography of the 80s and 90s is iconic and helped shape the cultural world of the late 20th century. This Portrait was taken at the Vivienne Westwood fall-fashion show in Paris in 1995. The Collection was titled 'Vive la Cocotte' and focused on undergarments to create exaggerated silhouettes. In typical Westwood style, the show was a contrast to the classic 90s aesthetic, which is perfectly captured in this Portrait of the Model Nadja Auermann. She is wearing a Corset top richly adorned with ruffles, bows, and flower print. Her black leather gloves contrast the light tulle skirt and stola. She looks directly at the camera with pursed lips, even further exaggerating her porcelain doll makeup. The classic Vivienne Westwood pearl choker...

Helmut Newton, Paris - Portrait of the Photographer, Fine Art Photography, 1996

High-end framing on request. All prints are done and signed by the artist. The collector receives an additional certificate of authenticity from the gallery. Helmut Newton is renowned for his provocative and daring fashion photography that revolutionized the industry. Born in 1920 in Berlin, Newton became famous for his work with Vogue and other major fashion magazines, where his bold and often controversial style stood out. His photography is characterized by a striking blend of glamour, eroticism, and often surreal elements, which challenged traditional notions of beauty and femininity. Helmut Newton's legacy lies in his fearless approach to fashion photography, his unique ability to blend art with commercial photography, and his influence on future generations of photographers who continue to draw inspiration from his iconic style. Roxanne Lowit photographed her colleague in Paris in 1996, capturing him with his camera in hand. Daring poses, red lips, crooked smiles, and sex appeal characterize the photographic oeuvre of the late Roxanne Lowit. Catapulting us straight back into a decade of excess and ecstasy, her unfiltered lens into the 90s reveals more than ever. Uninterested in glossy façades, the star photographer captured the unseen without being voyeuristic. Eternalizing the prime of supermodel culture with Kate Moss and Naomie Campbell, enfant terribles of the art circus...
