Stephen Edlich More Art
American, 1944-1989
Stephen P. Edlich (1944-1989) was born in New York City. He graduated from NYU in 1967, and spent a lot of time traveling in the UK. In England, he met Barbara Hepworth and saw the work of Ben Nicholson, which had a great influence on his art. Edlich worked in Cornwall before going back to the states to attend the New School for Social Research in New York for a sociology masters program.
While he was in England, Edlich also met art dealer Victor Waddington. Waddington put on an exhibition of Edlich’s work in 1969 at his gallery in Montreal. Edlich continued to create sculptures and exhibit in New York. There, he also worked for a serigraph printing firm and as an adjunct instructor at the New York Institute of Technology.
Edlich also began creating paintings and works on paper, and was showing at more and more important galleries, including Marlborough.
His work belongs to several museum collections including the Art Institute of Chicago; the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Neuberger Museum of Art; the Brooklyn Museum; the Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh; and the Cleveland Museum of Art.(Biography provided by Marlborough New York)

Nocturnal Parts - abstract geometric contemporary modern painting relief
Located in Doetinchem, NL
Nocturnal Parts is a unique one-of-a-kind contemporary modern painting relief by Dutch artist Sander Martijn Jonker. It is a relief consisting of two open spherical parts with an intriguing matte black finish, perhaps a bit mysterious but very beautifully made. It can be hanged in two different ways, with the opening between the two spherical elements either facing away or facing the observer. Depending where the light comes from one might decide for the one or the other hanging method.
Sander Martijn Jonker (1977, Netherlands) graduated from the St. Joost School of Art & Design in Den Bosch, The Netherlands. He primarily makes three-dimensional reliefs that play with the tension between abstraction and representation, surface and space. Light, shadow and their elusive ever-changing properties play an important role. Although the resulting works are abstract, he uses everyday reality as a starting and/or reference point.
His work is created through forms of manipulation, distortion, repetition and simplification. Some works arise from the repetition of a simple movement or form, others are made by exploring how far he can go with the deformation and manipulation of the material, after which he captures and preserves the shape.
He experiences daily life as uncontrollable and at times confusing. In order to cope with that, he is always looking for patterns and has gradually developed various rituals and ways of control, hoping they can offer him certainty and reassurance. His work and person are inextricably connected. He makes the things he makes because he doesn’t have a choice. He is trying to get a grip...
