The task of scaring off the “demons” and keeping away intruders is the reason you can find sculptures of lions guarding structures from the ancient Ishtar Gates...

Bronze Sculpture of “Antoine Laurent Lavoisier” by Aime Jules Dalou
By Susse Freres, Aimé-Jules Dalou
Located in Shippensburg, PA
The present model is a reduction of Dalou's "Monument to Antoine Laurent Lavoisier" executed for the Grand Amphitheater of the New Sorbonne in Paris where he remains situated directly opposing the stage in a domed niche. He received the commission in 1886 for the roughly three meter high stone figure and exhibited a model for it at the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts of 1890 as no. 1256. Dalou received permission in 1892 to offer reductions of the model and contracted with Susse Freres to cast his figures, revising it into four models with slight differences. The present model is an exact reduction of his commission while the others have variations to the base, the positioning of the books and the posture of the figure. One of these versions he exhibited at the Salon de la Société Nationale of 1901 as no. 32. One of his variations, known as reduction no. 1 of the same dimensions as the present model was offered at Christies (Sale 1365, 23 April 2004, lot 138) for an achieved sale price of $ 9560 USD. The present model was cast by the house of Susse, probably just shortly after Dalou's death in 1902. It is a technically exceptional model cast in the lost-wax method with great attention to detail shown in every aspect of the finishing, notable is the crispness of the model where every detail was carefully brought out by the foundry. It is finished in a complex golden brown artistic patination. ANTOINE LAURENT LAVOISIER Born in 1743, Antoine Laurent Lavoisier was a central figure in the chemical revolution of the 18th century and would eventually become known as the father of modern chemistry. He developed theories around the chemical reactivity of oxygen and was a coauthor for the present system of naming chemical substances. As a young man of 26, he was elected to the French Academy of Sciences and was a leading public figure and administrator for the Monarch. He had a share of the "General Farm" under the Monarch, an enterprise that helped finance the government and shared in the taxes collected for the government; it was for this participation he was executed in 1794 during the French Revolution's Reign of Terror along with his father-in-law and 26 other General Farm members. Aimé-Jules Dalou...

Art Deco “Panther Walking” French Bronze Sculpture by Maurice Prost & S. Freres
By Maurice Prost, Susse Freres
Located in Shippensburg, PA
Panther Walking" by Maurice Prost (FRENCH, 1894-1967) Patinated bronze; signed "M. Prost" & "Susse Fres Editeurs Paris" to base; exhibited 1928 Item # 009PAC15W A powerful and sleek model of a stalking black panther, this sculpture captures the essence of the Art Deco spirit with it’s mechanized minimalism and proportions. A trained animalier, Maurice Prost was skilled at capturing technical realism while depicting his subjects with utmost austerity - Payne’s "Animals in Bronze” showcases a resting panther by Prost that perfectly juxtaposes this form, its perfect realism and inordinate detailing lending credibility to springboard into minimalism. The present model is one of his most famous works, being finished in a nearly matte black patina and joined through the original Belgian black marble base. The edges of the stone are lightly ground to only hint at naturalism, the pure and gorgeous black marble stone cut with a slight taper in depth and a more evident height tapering. It is incised in the typical script on the base "M. PROST" and "SUSSE FRES EDITEURS PARIS". Prior sale results: Sotheby’s, Paris, 2010, lot 36, 24 3/8” edition; achieved 10,000 EUR Freeman’s, Philadelphia, 2008, lot 76, 14 3/16” edition; achieved $ 6,875 USD Bonhams, London, 2015, lot 69, 64.5cm edition; achieved $ 10,654 USD Christies, London, 2011, Sale 3697, lot 264, 14 5/8” edition; achieved $ 7,022 USD Sotheby’s, Paris, 2007, lot 109, 64.5cm edition; achieved 9,600 EUR Artist Listings & Further Reading: Art Bronzes, Michael Forrest, 1988, p. 220-221, half page illust. 3.171 E. French Modernism Bronze Sculpture “Roaring Jaguar” after Adolphe Geoffroy
By Adolphe-Louis-Victor Geoffroy, Susse Freres
Located in Shippensburg, PA
A vigorously modeled figure of a panther, Geoffroy executed this model in the nouveau and growing interest in modernism that began gripping the Animaliers during the first quarter of the 20th century. With a light impasto to the surface, it is evident where the artist heavily worked the wax before casting - note the presence of fingerprints that have transferred into the casting, likely a rather early lost-wax casting of the model. An exquisite casting, Geoffroy does a marvelous job alluding to the power, ferocity, agility and curious personality of the panther. Adolphe Louis Victor...

"Lionne Marchant" French Bronze Sculpture by Roger Godchaux & Susse
By Susse Freres, Roger Godchaux
Located in Shippensburg, PA
Executed in a very fine overall green patination with hints of bronze, browns and blacks, the subject is soft and slinky in her movement. The subject is sometimes noted as “Panther”, as in the case of the work by Forrest (p. 220) and most examples sold by Sotheby’s over the decades; however, it is most commonly assumed to depict a young Lioness and it is probably most accurately referred to as "Lionne Marchant”. The lioness is finished with Godchaux’s distinctive surface modeling where the flesh is left textured like a wax model on the artists bench...

“Elephant with its Young” French Modernism Bronze Sculpture by Ary Bitter
By Ary Bitter, Susse Freres
Located in Shippensburg, PA
A rich and sensitive work, this fine sculpture beautifully depicts the protective nature of the proud Elephant as she stands over her young. The loose impressionism and rough working of the model is captured in the bronze in a way that leaves us with a sense of being very close to the artist's vision. A heavy impasto in the shaping of the model gives us a wonderful a sense of motion, an attempt to capture an incomplete story that remains in flux. As a lost-wax casting, the model was signed "Ary Bitter", "Susse Fre. Ede. Paris" and "cire perdue" in the wax prior to being cast, rather than the signatures being engraved or worked into the model afterwards. It is finished in a complex variated brown patination with hints of red-oxide with highlights intentionally relieved for effect. A tiny cold-stamped "FRANCE" is visible along the lower front edge. The work is raised over a sculpted solid rosewood base, reeded and undulating with a movement that compliments the work beautifully. Born in Marseilles, France on May 29th of 1883, Ary Jean Léon Bitter began his studies under the guidance of Emile Aldebert...
