Theodoros Stamos Prints and Multiples

American, 1922-1997
The Greek American artist, Theodoros Stamos, was born in 1922 in New York City into a family of Greek immigrants. He was a member of The Irascibles group which consisted of the first generation of the New York School and Abstract Expressionism. Members included Jimmy Ernst, Barnett Newman, James Brooks, Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, Clyfford Still, Robert Motherwell, Ad Reinhardt, and others. Betty Parsons hosted a solo exhibition of Stamos work in 1943 when he was only 21 years old. In the years following, Parsons served as a vital mentor helping Stamos establish his position in the contemporary art world. Stamos early works from the 1940’s incorporated organic motifs and earthy coloring. As a member of The Irascibles, Stamos was influenced by his fellow members and his technique began to shift towards a more expressionist style. His works became increasingly simplified in the subsequent years, tending towards greater abstraction. Areas of flat color contrast one another to create a sense of depth in his works. Stamos taught at Black Mountain College in North Carolina, the Art Students League in New York, and the Cummington School of Fine Arts in Massachusetts. His art is owned by many major collections including The Phillips Collection in Washington, DC; Museum of Modern Art in New York, New York; and the Art Institute of Chicago in Chicago Illinois. He passed away in 1997 in Greece.

Andersen (Printer) Philip Barber (Printer) Hang Nguyen (Printer) Stephanie Nowack (Printer) Michael Reid (Printer) Daniel Rounds (Printer) Vermillion Editions Limited (Publisher) Sam Gilliam Biography: Sam Gilliam was one of the great innovators in postwar American painting. He emerged from the Washington, D.C. scene in the mid 1960s with works that elaborated upon and disrupted the ethos of Color School painting. A series of formal breakthroughs would soon result in his canonical Drape paintings, which expanded upon the tenets of Abstract Expressionism in entirely new ways. Suspending stretcherless lengths of painted canvas from the walls or ceilings of exhibition spaces, Gilliam transformed his medium and the contexts in which it was viewed. As an artist in the nation’s capital at the height of the Civil Rights Movement, this was not merely an aesthetic proposition; it was a way of defining art’s role in a society undergoing dramatic change. Gilliam pursued a pioneering course in which experimentation was the only constant. Inspired by the improvisatory ethos of jazz, his lyrical abstractions took on an increasing variety of forms, moods, and materials. In addition to a traveling retrospective organized by the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. in 2005, Sam Gilliam was the subject of solo exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (1971); The Studio Museum in Harlem, New York (1982); Whitney Museum of American Art, Philip Morris Branch, New York (1993); J.B. Speed Memorial Museum, Louisville, Kentucky (1996); Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C. (2011); and Kunstmuseum Basel, Switzerland (2018), among many other institutions. A semi-permanent installation of Gilliam’s paintings opened at Dia:Beacon in August 2019. His work is included in over fifty public collections, including those of the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris; Tate Modern, London; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; and the Art Institute of Chicago. This artwork "Untitled #1" is an original color screen print on heavy Wove paper by noted Greek artist Theodoros Stamos, 1922-1997. It is hand signed and numbered 70/225 in pencil by the artist. The image size 30 x 22.65 inches, sheet size is 34 x 26.75 inches. It is in excellent condition, the colors are fresh and bright, has never been framed. About the artist: Theodoros Stamos is heralded as one of the few abstract painters who bridged the New York School's first and second generations. His age, in particular, afforded him this unique position, as he was the youngest member of the "Irascibles," the core group of fifteen New York School painters publicized by Nina Leen's 1951 photograph in Life magazine. Like his New York School contemporaries, in particular his close friends Barnett Newman and Mark Rothko, Stamos continuously explored the workings of artistic form through color. Throughout his long career, Stamos has continued to be renowned as an abstract expressionist Born in 1922 in New York to parents of Greek heritage, Stamos showed exceptional promise early in life. At thirteen years old, in 1936, he accepted a scholarship to the American Artists' School in New York to study sculpture with Simon Kennedy and Joseph Konzal...

An original silkscreen by Theodoros Stamos, Greek/American (1922 - 1997). it is hand-signed and numbered 50/75 in pencil. Currently unframed. Theodoros Stamos was one of the original Abstract Expressionists working in New York City in the 1940s and 50s. His interest in nature, Surrealism, primitive arts and Asian Mysticism helped him to synthesize a non-representational language, which he emphasized with subtle gradations of color and form. His canvases often have a grainy, atmospheric surface with muted colors and calligraphic configurations. Stamos, the fourth of six children born to Greek immigrants in New York City, was awarded a scholarship to American Artists’ School, where he studied sculpture with Simon Kennedy and Joseph Konzal...
