Tomi Ungerer Prints and Multiples

French, 1931-2019
Tomi Ungerer is an incredibly prolific artist who has published over 140 books of drawings ranging from iconic children’s books to controversial adult work. He is famous for his sharp social satire and his witty aphorisms, and his work ranges from the fantastic to the autobiographical. He is also an illustrator, a sculptor, an inventor, an architectural designer and has worked extensively in advertising. In 2007 the Tomi Ungerer Museum opened in Strasbourg, making him the first living artist to have a museum dedicated to his life and work in France. Since then, the Tomi Ungerer Museum has been voted as one of the 10 best museums in Europe by the Council of Europe. Ungerer is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Illustrators in 2011, the European Prize for Culture in 1999, the National Prize for Graphic Arts in France in 1995, and the Jacob Burckhardt Prize, awarded by the Goethe Foundation, in 1983.

Tomi Ungerer Evergreen Review poster, 1967 (protest posters)
By Tomi Ungerer
Located in NEW YORK, NY
Vintage original Tomi Ungerer, Vietnam protest poster, Evergreen Review, 1967: Grove Press publisher Barney Rosset began Evergreen review in 1957 as a literary quarterly featuring the likes of Sartre, Camus and Beckett as well as American poets Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Jack Kerouac. By 1966, the publication had increased its frequency and become a voice of political iconoclasm, so graphic designer John Alcorn refreshed its look, dropping "review" from the title in the process. Heralding the redesign was a new advertising Campaign : "Join The Underground." Here, a poster for the February 1967, number utilizes cover artwork by noted illustrator and satirist Tomi Ungerer: a coolie-hatted image of Uncle Sam, sunk in the quagmire of Vietnam and displeased with the face he presents to the mirror. Off-set lithograph. Measure: 30 x 45 inches. Some signs of minor handling; otherwise very good condition for its age. Unsigned from an edition of unknown. Original 1st printing. About the artist Tomi Ungerer is best known for his witty children's books, as well as being a successful political commentator, prolific writer, and erotic artist. Born in Strasbourg in 1931, he first gained notoriety after moving to New York in 1956 and creating illustrations for magazines such as Esquire, Life, Harper’s Bazaar, The Village Voice, and The New York Times. Ungerer is now internationally renowned for his etched caricatures imbued with sharp social satire. During the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s Ungerer began to branch out from advertising and editorial work to make personal pictorial responses to racism, fascism, and war, most notably a set of brutal anti-Vietnam war posters...

Close has said “I’m not interested in daguerreotypes because it’s an antiquarian process, I like them because from my point of view, photography never got any better than it was in 1840… Photographs are often so big now that twenty or thirty people can view one at the same time, but a daguerreotype is the most intimate image made with a camera, because it is small and only one person can look at it.” Printer: Universal Limited Art Editions, East Islip, New York / ULAE & Brand X Editions Publisher: Doctors of the World / Art of this Century, NY Literature: "The Art of Healing" which catalogues the works from the portfolio.
