Victor Di Gesu Figurative Prints

American

Victor di Gesu first attended the Chouinard Art School before moving to Paris, where he studied with André Lhote at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. He subsequently attended the Escuela de Bellas Artes in Barcelona before furthering his studies in Italy. Returning to California, he worked with a variety of artists, including F. Tolles Chamberlain and Maynard Jepson. An intuitive colorist, Di Gesu’s classical training and scientific research into color theory helped him create vivid yet harmonious works which, while reminiscent of Matisse and Gauguin, retained a verve and spontaneity that was uniquely his own. A prolific artist, Di Gesu was the recipient of numerous medals and juried awards, both in the United States and France. He was the winner of the Prix Othon Friesz Prize. He exhibited widely and with success, including at the Louvre Museum and the Exposition des Artistes Etrangeres in Paris, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

'Hostellerie des Chiens du Guet' — British Impressionism
By Sybil Andrews
Located in Myrtle Beach, SC
Sybil Andrews, 'Hostellerie des Chiens du Guet', color monotype, c. 1925; edition 2, proof 1. Signed 'Sybil Andrews pinx et imp' and titled in pencil. A superb, painterly impression, with fresh colors, on heavy cream wove paper; the full sheet with margins (5/8 to 1 3/4 inches). Printed by the artist. The artist’s original archival mounting tape remains in the four sheet corners, recto (well away from the image), in excellent condition. Matted to museum standards, unframed. A unique impression. Image size 8 15/16 x 11 15/16 inches (227 x 303 mm); sheet size 12 1/4 x 15 1/2 inches (311 x 394 mm). ABOUT THIS WORK In addition to her almost 80 celebrated modernist color linocuts, Sybil Andrews also worked in the monotype technique. She typically produced two or three impressions (or pulls) from each hand-painted plate, each proof unique in its qualities of color values and vibrancy. In 1933, Sybil Andrews and Cyril Power had an exhibition of their color monotypes and linocuts at the Redfern Gallery. Most of Andrews' monotypes were destroyed by a fire in an Ottawa gallery in 1959, and they now rarely come to the market. ABOUT THE IMAGE The Hostellerie des Chiens du Guet is a small hotel at the edge of...

The clown's eyes are hand drawn with added details throughout the face and hair. Signed, numbered, and titled along the bottom edge of paper, "35/120 E.V. "Alter Ego" Claus Sievert" Presented in a new white mat with foam core backing. Mat size: 24"H x 20"W Paper size: 18.38"H x 15"W Image, Claus Sievert, (American, 1949–2009) nicknamed “The Tree Guy," was a German-born American printmaker and illustrator, who studied etching in an art college in Brunswick, Germany, in 1971. He began his career as an art teacher in Germany, teaching printmaking, art history, advertising design, and visual communication, and became a full-time artist in 1981. Sievert created limited-edition etchings from copper plates and a hand-turned press which he then individually hand-colored. Sievert’s work won awards, illustrated a children’s book by Leo Tolstoy, was commissioned by the Sierra Club and Golden Gate National Recreation Area to illustrate their publications, and he had his images published in several calendars. He was known for his prints highlighting forms and the beauty of nature. His art was also featured in Ansel Adams Gallery, Muir Woods...
