AnnDemeulemeester 1996 Wool Set RibbedHighNeckKnit & BiasCut LowWaistMiniSkirt
By Ann Demeulemeester
Located in Chicago, IL
Like a turtleneck ensemble acquired by TheMet Costume Institute, Ann Demeulemeester designed this bold-silhouette contrasting-texture wool set of chocolate ribbed high-neck cropped tight knit sweater and black bias-cut crepe mini skirt for her Fall/Winter 1996-1997 collection, when the latter low-waisted garment without a waistband was worn on the Paris runway over trousers. The soft thick darted pullover jumper characteristically has the designer's hallmark of oversized exaggerated cuffs, which can be left unfolded for a more feminine look. The Belgian designer meticulously tailored the brushed-wool skirt so that its three seams are in the back, where there are also darts to flatter the bias drape, two belt loops, and invisible zip closure at the center.
Aside from featuring knitted turtlenecks in almost every ensemble that debuted on the runway that season, this collection was significant because Demeulemeester--who was known for her black-and-white palette of monochromatic pieces until she retired from her independent label in 2013--added colors and textures including this sweater. However, red was the only color featured on the runway. For an alternative pairing idea, we included a photo of a similar brown ribbed darted high-neck sweater, which was worn in Demeulemeester's runway show for Fall/Winter 2000, but with a shiny billowy slit maxi skirt...

1990s Christian Dior Three Piece Navy Skirt Suit with Polka-Dot Blouse
By Christian Dior
Located in London, GB
This early 1990s Christian Dior navy and white polka-dot three piece suit is comprised of a skirt, jacket and sleeveless top. The ensemble would have been designed by Gianfranco Ferre during his eight year tenure as Creative Director of the House. The jacket is pristinely tailored from a smooth navy wool and lined with a playful white-on-navy polka-dot silk. It has a single-breasted cut which fastens with five oval gold-tone buttons engraved with the “CD” logo. The silhouette is elegant, showcasing a slight nipped-in waist and elongated length with three flap pockets to the front. The sleeves are split and trimmed internally with ribbed white ribbed cotton, as are the inside of the lapels. The skirt is cut to a knee-length pencil silhouette. It is lined in coordinating polka-dot silk and fastens at the back with a hook-and-eye clasp and hidden tonal zip. The inside of the waistband is lined in ribbed white cotton. The final piece in this ensemble is a sleeveless blouse in navy and white polka-dot silk - to match the lining of the jacket and skirt. The top has a relaxed, straight shape and fastens at the back of the neck with a hidden tonal zip and hook-and-eye clasp. The label reads “Christian Dior Boutique Paris” and is numbered. We have attached an advertising campaign for Christian Dior makeup...

Questions About Vionnet Suits, Outfits and Ensembles
- 1stDibs ExpertJanuary 10, 2025Madeleine Vionnet created two innovations that would revolutionize women's fashion. The first is the bias cut, the practice of cutting fabric at a 45-degree angle to its grain to enhance its stretch and allow it to flow more freely. In addition, Vionnet pioneered new draping methods, reducing the number of seams and fastening needed to produce a dress. On 1stDibs, find a large selection of vintage apparel and accessories.
- 1stDibs ExpertJanuary 27, 2025The designer Madeleine Vionnet was known for a few innovations. Perhaps her most important contribution to fashion was the bias cut, a method of cutting fabric across the grain at a diagonal to enhance the draping properties of a garment. She also revolutionized fashion by introducing more fluid silhouettes, such as evening gowns inspired by the flowing tunics of ancient Greece. This approach allowed women to abandon the restrictive undergarments of the era, such as corsets. In this way, Vionnet was ahead of her time in terms of championing women's comfort when developing fashion designs. On 1stDibs, shop an assortment of vintage apparel and accessories.
