Vladimir Clavijo-Telepnev Still-life Photography

Russian, b. 1962

Contrary to the typical perspective of portrait photography, Vladimir Clavijo-Telepnev poses his nude subjects facing away from the viewer, creating a visual dissonance. In monochromatic images, the Russian photographer examines themes of fear, lust and uncertainty.

Clavijo-Telepnev’s grandfather, Edmundo Clavijo Cubilios, was a well-known Colombian photographer and artist. Clavijo-Telepnev pursued his studies in painting, graphics and polygraphic design at the Moscow Polygraphic Academy, now the Moscow Polytechnic University, graduating in 1986.

Clavijo-Telepnev gained experience through working as a press photographer, as a fashion and advertising photographer and as a lecturer at various institutions including Moscow State University and the Design Academy. Over his career, Clavijo-Telepnev has held memberships in the International Association of Graphic Artists and the Russian Union of Photo Artists. His honors include the Best Cover for Youth Magazines award and Best Photo Project main award for the Benedetta Barzini Portrait.

Romantic, and tinged with melancholy, his work features iconography reminiscent of storybook tales. In 2001, Clavijo-Telepnev launched his own photo art school and published Imperfecto and Impressions. In 2005, he published Cherry Orchard. For a 2012 group show at the Story Museum in Oxford, England, he exhibited photographs with an enticing, yet frightening, quality inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

His work has been exhibited widely in Moscow, including at the Lumiere Gallery, Cervantes Institute and the Russian Modern History State Central Museum. Internationally, his photography was in the 2003 “Remembrance: Russian Post-Modern Nostalgia” at the Yeshiva University Museum in New York, and in exhibitions at Hay Hill gallery in London and the gallery at Grand Hyatt Dubai. English musician Elton John and Welsh film director Peter Greenaway are among the collectors of Clavijo-Telepnev’s artwork.

"White Flowers" Photography 30"x26" inch Ed. 1/3 by VLADIMIR CLAVIJO-TELEPNEV Author's direct print on wood PRINT ON THE WOOD The series is based on the idea to look at the famous literary work from an unorthodox perspective and show the content with the help of visual images. In Vladimir’s view the asexuality of the characters allows, within the given photographic project, to use a “transvestitism approach” with females portraying males. The task was to use a natural female refinement of the heroines. Chronologically-wise the Chekhov’s characters find themselves in the 1920’s and the 1930’s when the very notion “style” was most graphic and fitting. The retro-styling approach used in the series makes the photos both expressive and melancholic at the same time. With all his inherent theatricality and nostalgia the artist puts his post-modernistic compositions in the atmospheres of the years past reproducing long-gone motifs. He shows reality against the background of a “theatrical universe”. Grace Glueck, a prominent art critic for the New York Times newspaper, wrote that Vladimir Clavijo-Telepnyov’s large-scale photos look intriguing and, among other things, the photos have something really theatrical about them as if inspired by the system initiated by the Russian theatrical director of the early 20th century Konstantin Stanislavsky. In a subject called Temptation, the rather spoilt servant Yasha in the role of a tempter portrays a so-called new Russian. The character is expressive and cynical; he is aloof, kind of cheeky and self-satisfied individual quick to elbow old-timers. A tragic theme of old age, helplessness and eventual death of a servant named Firse is solved in the form of diptych with a little girl sitting alone in the corner of a huge empty room. The image of land-owning lady Ranevskaya was quite logically portrayed by Renata Litvinova, an actress, script-writer and film director who had played the same role in the Moscow Art Theater...

The Castelloland Installation. From the Castelloland series
By Paloma Castello
Located in Miami Beach, FL
Castelloland works with objects whose uniqueness is fundamental to the narrative of each story, as each image reacts and develops through the interaction between the word and the object. This series is composed of more than 30 photographs and the stories that connect them, which oscillate between fiction and reality. The artistic work of Paloma Castello, giving life or a different narrative to the past of an object. She is interested in playing with memory and relating it to the present, creating an atmosphere between reality and fiction. Castellos' family and social origins have a powerful influence on her work. She grew up surrounded by objects and anecdotes inherited from her ancestors that inspire endless surreal stories. Her work arises from these experiences; They are evidence of her “autofiction.” Paloma Castello presents us with a work full of nostalgia. Her artistic work represents the soul of her proposal: inherited objects discovered or found that have become the tip of the iceberg of her past. They are elements that she collects, remembers and then classifies following a method that frames her anachronistic attitude that shows the youth of her art. It also shows that experimentation on herself is common for an artist just starting her career. Without a doubt, this resource, valid and true, becomes the path that determines the author's experimental character. From the series Castelolland 34 Castelloland digital photographs...
