Wang ZhiWu Figurative Paintings

Chinese, b. 1984
Wang ZhiWu is a Chinese pop artist, whose paintings and sculptures celebrate the life of children via whimsically caricatured animals. Although at first glance, Wang’s heroes delight the viewer with humor and innocent charm, deeper themes lurk afoot. With sophisticated, scumbled brushwork and coldpaint patinas, Wang uses color and texture to allude to global land masses, oceans, seas, mountains, weather patterns, skies, and national borders. The overall effect of his paint handling is to create a sense of geopolitical mapmaking, rather than that of just mere ‘flesh and fur!’ On close inspection Wang’s seemingly innocent animal protagonists turn out to be subtle referents of powerexchanges between mogul and maid, bad guy and bodyguard, the haves and havenots even to an array of geeks, nerds, and n'erdowells, seemingly striving to become calm, cool, and collected. Some of his protagonists haplessly go without the fate of the startled? while others fancy a social climb! In contemporary China’s topsyturvy world of instant billionaires, displaced peasants, newlyminted capitalists, sorry slums by luxury condos, and bureaucrats puzzled by the mixed signals of free markets with the old, topdown communist order, it’s no wonder that one of China’s most successful contemporary artists should take on such themes even if they are ‘masked over’ by his sheer love of ‘cute’ animals and the glorious life of children. (It should be noted that Wang is, indeed, and animalrights activist in China an oxymoron, in itself?) Finally, from a recent generation so saturated by animated, popular media and an exploding global art market it’s again no surprise that Wang tackles mixing fineart technique and thematic gravitas with pop characters and ingenuous “cartooning.” SELECTED MUSEUMS & EXHIBITIONS “World Expo,” Shanghai, China “Guangdong Province FineArt Exhibition,” Guangzhou Art Museum, Guangdong, China “The ArtisticProcess Show,” Shenzhen Art Museum, Shenzhen, China Shanghai Youth Biennial LIU, Haisu Art Museum, Shanghai 4th China International CulturalIndustries Fair, Shenzhen Dubai Museum of Fine Art, United Arab Emirates SELECTED PUBLIC & PRIVATE COLLECTORS Heng Tong Securities, Ltd., Hong Kong, China Shenzhen People’s Hospital The Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corporation, Ltd. Dog Years - Brightly Colored Self Portrait of Artist as a Aqua Colored Dog
By Marcos Raya
Located in Chicago, IL
Raya, like every productive artist, is a collection of actions, utopias and talents. He is an acrylic painter and a muralist; an installation artist and a practitioner of the theory of the fragment as a synthesis of the whole; he is Chicano but his work has no passport; he is an obsessive self-portraitist (I, as the multiplicity locked within the I) and his an advocate of his community (in the fullest sense of the world); his is from Chicago and - being a nation onto himself - is a native of his art education; his yearns for the Tijuana of tomorrow while being a full-fledged inhabitant of the Tijuana of half a century back; he admires high-tech while being a fan of Frida Kahlo. --Carlos Monsivais Marcos Raya Dog Years oil on canvas 17h x 17w in 43.18h x 43.18w cm MSR054 Marcos Raya brings together old and new works in a variety of media that mostly explores the sociological impact of technological change. His paintings, collages and installations present an idiosyncratic hybrid of Mexican folklore...
