Yoshitomo Nara (b.1959) is a renowned Japanese artist best known for his paintings of children and animals that appear simultaneously sweet and sinister. Nara's pastel-hued subjects often recall manga characters with their wide eyes and large, round heads. However innocuous or innocent Nara's children and animals may seem, they are sometimes brandishing weapons, in defiant stances, and usually have an accusatory look of intense irritation or hatred in their eyes. This signature juxtaposition of cartoon-y innocence with symbols of human evil has earned Nara international acclaim and following. Equally as prolific throughout his oeuvre is Nara's white dog motif, which has been reimagined across mediums.
