¡Fútbol! - Deep Blue & Yellow Geometric Wall Hanging Sculpture on Linen & Panel
Located in Signal Mountain, TN
Imagine the swelling sea in an electric storm—fútbol/soccer fans in a packed stadium at night, their thunderous roars in the moments leading up to kickoff, their focus on one player on the field, the tension in the crowd increasing exponentially in contrast to the calm confidence of an expert, the distortion of space and time as she moves her foot ever closer to the ball—The Creation of Adam—a growing...

LOVE, ME - Figurative Painting on Brown Fabric
By Omari Booker
Located in Signal Mountain, TN
This painting by Omari Booker depicts himself and his sister when they were children. Originally painted as a study for a mural in Nashville, Tennessee, Booker reworked this very personal piece to stand alone. On the left side of this painting, Omari's sister sits in a pink and white polk-a-dot dress with a bow in her hair. She looks lovingly at her brother to the right, who is wearing a black and white button-up. The artist recalled that his mother made those outfits by hand, and he alludes to the special nature of textiles in his history by utilizing found fabric rather than a canvas as his medium. Omari Booker, a Nashville native, began his journey in the visual arts at Montgomery Bell Academy. Since then, he has studied and displayed his work at multiple institutions including Belmont University, Middle Tennessee State...

FRAME #93: Original Animation Frame from Fistfuls of Diamonds
Located in Signal Mountain, TN
This black and white still from McLean Fahnestock's animated video titled "Fistfuls of Diamonds," depicts two planes attempting to put out wildfires with water. The "water" in this case, has been replaced with glitter by the artist. Many of the depicted scenes were inspired by moments where Fahnestock was astonished by something that was equal parts mesmerizing and distressing. “Seeing my first wildfire in person, or the images of San Francisco covered in an orange haze, all the while recognizing that these things were in fact terrible. They signified disasters and ecological shifts. The increase in wildfire events is due in part to the encroachment of larger, developed communities onto lands that were previously maintained for fire season by natural means or by the Forest Service...

ZIG ZAG HAMMOCK - oil, enamel and silicone on canvas- pink, blue, tan texture
By Eleanor Aldrich
Located in Signal Mountain, TN
A feminine figure reclines in a pink and blue-strapped hammock. The figure sitting in the hammock is activated by Aldrich’s transformation of paint and silicone into layered, glistening, and oozing swaths of skin. The hammock, recalling the grid, works as a pattern trying to hold and contain the body resting inside it. -- Building on her previous show, Main Squeeze, which featured bodies pressing through the grid of lawn chairs, in “That Feeling When,” Aldrich expands the excess of materials to large figure paintings and small, overfilled sculptures. Aldrich uses thick materials that protrude from the surface, reminding the viewer that the paintings are not only physical objects in themselves, but also create the illusion of the picture. The work employs a risky excess of material that borders on uncontrollable; becoming metaphoric for barely controlled femininity, the attraction and repulsion of materialism, and the body pressing against constraints. The figures in the paintings are seen from behind or have turned away. The viewer is put in a place of questioning whether they are a voyeur or a co-viewer with the figure of something deeper in the picture plane. The full body paintings of young women based on Nancy Drew...

TECHNOLOGY OF DIRT & AIR - Oil & Canvas Abstract Floral Painting
By Jered Sprecher
Located in Signal Mountain, TN
A companion painting to this piece, TECHNOLOGY OF DIRT is owned by the Knoxville Museum of Art. The painting "TECHNOLOGY OF DIRT & AIR" was inspired by an image glanced as I passed by a florist shop window. Inside the florist show was a vibrant floral arrangement overflowing with roses and foliage. On the surface of the window were reflections of architecture behind me and abstracted slivers of light and distorted shapes of things reflected though hardly recognizable. I snapped a few photographs at the time. Several months later, I returned to those images and was intrigued at how the flowers in the image seemed to be made out of crystal and how the reflections on the window "interrupted" the ability to easily make out the forms in the photograph. I was intrigued by the complexity of the image and how recognizable elements emerged and then faded into abstraction. As I worked on this painting, I wanted it to be as if it was coming into crisp focus, while also becoming a complicated tapestry of shapes and colors. I have made six paintings in this series thus far. Jered Sprecher is a visual artist who was born in Lincoln, Nebraska (1976). He received his M.F.A. from the University of Iowa and his B.A. from Concordia University in Nebraska. He has taught at Princeton University and Cornell University. Mr. Sprecher currently lives and works in Knoxville, Tennessee, where he is an assistant professor at the University of Tennessee. Jered Sprecher’s studio practice explores the “handwriting” of humankind. The vocabulary that he draws from is focused on the vast array of marks and images in one’s surroundings. From this vocabulary he samples visual motifs and imports them into his paintings and drawings. These works continually focus on remnants and fragments that are captured in the midst of change, then edited and fused together in the space of painting. These images are pregnant with a longing to communicate. The success and failure of these “messages in a bottle” are the basis of his work. Mr. Sprecher has had solo exhibitions at Wendy Cooper Gallery, Chicago; Jeff Bailey Gallery, New York; the Art Gallery of Knoxville; The Cress Gallery-UTC, Chattanooga; and Steven Zevitas Gallery, Boston. His work has also been included in group exhibitions at The Drawing Center, New York; Brooklyn Academy of Music (Next Next Art), New York; Cheekwood Museum of Art, Nashville; Des Moines Art Center; Urban Institute for Contemporary Art, Grand Rapids; Arthouse, Austin; Mark Moore Gallery...

MIDNIGHT IN EDEN - Orange, Blue, Brown Adam and Eve in Surreal Garden at Night
By Constantin Werner
Located in Signal Mountain, TN
This painting is Werner's interpretation of The Garden of Eden at nighttime, as he imagines it becomes a hellscape after dark. Animals lurk in the darkness behind an emaciated Adam and Eve, the red eyes of a bull-headed dragon pierce through the darkness. "This was my idea: how about if the the Garden Eden was only a peaceful place during the daytime? Once night falls, dark and cruel animals appear, including bats and giant rodents, ruled by the Snake King (here a giant dragon with a male and a female head). Those frightening creatures represent the suppressed, destructive libido of Adam and Eve (painted upside down from each other to show that they are opposites.) Innocent, they only dream about sin and their dark, unrecognized desires." -Constantin Werner

PWW-777 - Eric Mack - Contemporary Abstract Collage Painting Based off the Grid
Located in Signal Mountain, TN
PWW-777 is part of Eric Mack's ongoing body of work utilizing multi-media, complex compositions, and a grid centered around urban design. Using a grid to create the framework of the painting, Mack has utilized Zerox copies adhered by a matte medium to create graphic imagery of electronics from the 90s, small bits of a map of various places in Germany, and vinyl records. Mack paints on top of a torn canvas, and on the edges you can see the frayed, painted canvas mounted to the white backing of the frame. The work is finished with glass that shows minimum reflection as well as a customized 2 inch, white frame. Eric Mack (b.1976, Charleston) creates mathematically based renderings with a distinct post-modern twist. Works are informed with super imposed grids, patterns, and portals. Layered surfaces are created with paint, found objects, natural fibers, and synthetic substrates that explore the systems of our visual world. His most recent show “Charting the Terrain” is on view now at the California African American Museum in Los Angeles was covered by the Los Angeles Times, KCRW, and LALA Magazine. His last solo exhibition was titled "Impossible Architectures" at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2017. Recent group shows include "Abstract Mind" at the Czong Institute of Contemporary Art, South Korea, "Small Works 2017 at Trestle Gallery, Brooklyn, "Checkered History", Outpost Artist Resources, Brooklyn, N.Y. 2015; Collections include High Museum Atlanta, Ing Investments, Hartsfield Jackson International Airport - Atlanta + Atlanta Gas & Light Co. EQUIVALENCE 124- Acrylic on cut Linen - Red, Pink Abstract Geometric Painting
By Linda King Ferguson
Located in Signal Mountain, TN
This painting on cut linen canvas by Linda King Ferguson depicts a diamond shape that is dominated by a horizontal vesica piscis shape. The two intersecting circles are a dark salmon orange and a deep wine red (left to right). The canvas at the intersection of the two circles has been cut and peeled back to reveal that the back of the painting has been painted pink. While the trangular shape above the interseccting circles has been painted an ashy brown, the lower section has been left raw. Her Equivalence Series began as a feminist project; works that subvert the historically male gaze and a material language speaking of gendered concerns. Her color choices first came from Helen Molesworth’s essay, Painting With Ambivalence, published in WACK! Art of the Feminist Revolution. The Essay includes a large reproduction of Mary Heilmann’s 1979 painting...

LENTICULAR VANISH - textural optical illusion painting using caulk and enamel
By Eleanor Aldrich
Located in Signal Mountain, TN
Excerpt from a review by art critic Joe Nolan: "In these works, Aldrich paints on surfaces that have been covered in uniform vertical strips of caulk. The textures don’t play into the subjects of these paintings so much as create a consistent 3D pattern across the whole surface of a wood panel covered with canvas. Two of the most interesting works in this style give us graphic renderings of domestic interiors laid out in blocks of color and elemental shapes. 'Kitchen Sink' and 'Ironing' depict counters, faucets and ironing boards through a distorted perspective that’s unnervingly deep and narrow, vertiginous and claustrophobic. The caulk brings lots of texture to these works, and Aldrich’s paint appears to be applied in chromatic washes of yellow, pink and blue that seem serene given their off-kilter surroundings. In fact, Aldrich uses the repeating vertical textures to create vividly colored lenticular illusions in these works, which only reveal themselves as viewers move past the paintings. In addition to their formal qualities and their narrative content, Aldrich’s works also comment on traditional gender roles in Western society. Her narrative portraits are mostly inspired by the covers of Nancy Drew novels. Drew, the “girl detective” who first appeared in print as a female counterpart to the Hardy Boys...
