Boom, Bust, Repeat - Nick Peña - Contemporary Landscape/Abstract Painting
Located in Signal Mountain, TN
In BOOM BUST REPEAT17, Peña creates a silhouette of house and fills it with sharpe-edged shapes that contain gradients and saturated hues of red, green, and violet. He balances these colors with muted tones of orange and yellow . The viewer can create a house that is yet to be built in between the gaps here. In "Boom, Bust, Repeat", Peña remarks on a house and landscape that has yet to take place. The painting is created with watercolor and acrylic paint on paper. In the foreground we see Sintra board or flattened PVC that has been CNC routed. In the "soil" beneath the house are small circular lines that have been hand drawn with India ink. The Sintra board has been cut to reveal arrows in the negative space pointing upwards as to hint at a boom in the market. Peña’s works range from painting to multimedia installations that question the ever-changing psychological landscape of America; asking the viewer to re-examine their perceptions of the “American Dream” and the affects that pursuit has on our environment and national psyche. The realization that both the idealistic pursuit of happiness and the relevance of painting in a technologically driven world informs his practice. With each composition the labor begins with digital composites of a fragmented American landscape in peril —where tension lies in the contrasts between past and present, analog and digital, representation and abstraction, and stability and instability. In his most recent series the American home (stability) and fragmented and shifting landscape (instability) are veiled by a digitally produced mat. Traditionally a mat is, by definition, a flat, thin piece of paper based material included within the picture frame and serves as additional decoration when framing artwork. He activates this commonly overlooked material by using a non-traditional material, Sintra (flattened sheet of PVC), that has a negative digitally drawn image cut-out. This cut-out might, at first glance, look hand cut however, a more astute viewer would realize the precision is mechanical. The mat has been transformed from inactive decoration to digitally produced veil that represents the technologically anxious precision we surround ourselves with. Nick Peña...

ON THE ICE - Textural figure painting - Oil and Enamel on Canvas Red, Polka-Dot
By Eleanor Aldrich
Located in Signal Mountain, TN
In the series of paintings titled “That Feeling When,” Aldrich expands the excess of materials to large figure paintings and small, overfilled sculptures. Aldrich uses thick materials that protrude from the surface, reminding the viewer that the paintings are not only physical objects in themselves, but also create the illusion of the picture. The work employs a risky excess of material that borders on uncontrollable; becoming metaphoric for barely controlled femininity, the attraction and repulsion of materialism, and the body pressing against constraints. The figures in the paintings are seen from behind or have turned away. The viewer is put in a place of questioning whether they are a voyeur or a co-viewer with the figure of something deeper in the picture plane. The full body paintings of young women based on Nancy Drew...

SLEEPING ADONIS - Eleanor Aldrich - 30 x 40 - Mixed Media on Canvas, 2019
By Eleanor Aldrich
Located in Signal Mountain, TN
This mixed media painting, titled "Sleeping Adonis” is a textural rendering of a figure resting in a sprawling hammock. The piece consists of oil paint, enamel, silicone, caulking, and found transfers on canvas. Our subject, Adonis (a reference to the handsome young man in Greek mythology), is pressed tightly against the hammock and with the help of gravity, his skin squeezes and pokes out playfully between the webs of the hammock strings. The palpable weight of the sleeping boy...

LAWN CHAIR WITH MARBLES - Oil, enamel painting on canvas with marbles in resin
By Eleanor Aldrich
Located in Signal Mountain, TN
A figure reclines in a red and yellow-strapped lawn chair. The figure sitting in the chair is activated by Aldrich’s transformation of paint and resin into oozing swaths of skin between the lawn chair straps. The chair, recalling the grid, works as a pattern trying to hold and contain the body resting inside it. -- Building on her previous show, Main Squeeze, which featured bodies pressing through the grid of lawn chairs, in “That Feeling When,” Aldrich expands the excess of materials to large figure paintings and small, overfilled sculptures. MIRROR - Contemporary - Geometric Abstract w/ Repurposed Construction Material
Located in Signal Mountain, TN
"Mirror" is a site specific installation that was exhibited in the show "Dialects of Place(s) by Land Report Collective at COOP Gallery in Nashville, TN. In this piece, Jobe uses industrial materials such as insulation foam, concrete, window screen, and graphite tracing paper to create a patterned structure that protrudes from the corner and carries the viewer's eye upward. At the bottom of the piece, we see delicately balanced concrete on top of pale blue insulation foam. The patterned concrete and insulation foam carries the viewer's eye upwards towards another pop of blue on top of the aluminum window screen frame. The screen gives the viewer a window in which to look through the piece. On one side, this mesh frames the graphite paper and on the other side the viewer can see the patterned concrete and insulation foam. Review from "The Rib" about "Mirror" One of the more surprising works here is Nashville-based Brian Jobe...

THE BLACK CAT - Textural figurative painting, woman reclining with black cat
By Eleanor Aldrich
Located in Signal Mountain, TN
A woman reclines in a disheveled bedroom, the folds in her sweatshirt are delicately rendered by the texture of the paint. She stares at the window, where a black cat stands on the sill, looking back at her. The open window reveals a hint of a snowy cityscape. --- Building on her previous show, Main Squeeze, which featured bodies pressing through the grid of lawn chairs, in “That Feeling When,” Aldrich expands the excess of materials to large figure paintings and small, overfilled sculptures. Aldrich uses thick materials that protrude from the surface, reminding the viewer that the paintings are not only physical objects in themselves, but also create the illusion of the picture. Peña’s works range from painting to multimedia installations that question the ever-changing psychological landscape of America; asking the viewer to re-examine their perceptions of the “American Dream” and the affects that pursuit has on our environment. In "From Sea to Shining Sea" Peña takes a traditional approach to representing a house with modern architecture in what is seemingly the suburbs and contrasts the image with a more abstracted and chaotic foreground consisting of Sintra or PVC. EQUIVALENCE 104- Acrylic and Tint on cut Linen- Green, Red Abstract Geometric
By Linda King Ferguson
Located in Signal Mountain, TN
This painting on cut linen canvas by Linda King Ferguson is primarily color blocked into three sections. The leftmost rectangular section is a bright green color, and the rightmost section is a wine red. These two sections are separated by a golden yellow/orange line, that has been cut in a teardrop shape, peeling back from the mother canvas to reveal that the back of the canvas has been painted pink. Her Equivalence Series began as a feminist project; works that subvert the historically male gaze and a material language speaking of gendered concerns. Her color choices first came from Helen Molesworth’s essay, Painting With Ambivalence, published in WACK! Art of the Feminist Revolution. The Essay includes a large reproduction of Mary Heilmann’s 1979 painting...

In "From the Bottom Up", Peña takes a more traditional approach to representing a landscape with bold and vivid colors and contrasts the image with a more abstracted and chaotic foreground consisting of arrows and cut Sintra board to act simultaneously as an obstruction and window into the image. THE CRACKED MIRROR - oil and enamel and canvas on canvas- textural, figurative
By Eleanor Aldrich
Located in Signal Mountain, TN
A feminine figure occupies the majority of the right side of this canvas, and though we can't see her face, we know that she is looking at the wall beside her. The wall is disheveled, seemingly covered with graffiti and a broken mirror hangs loosely at a precarious angle. -- Building on her previous show, Main Squeeze, which featured bodies pressing through the grid of lawn chairs, in “That Feeling When,” Aldrich expands the excess of materials to large figure paintings and small, overfilled sculptures. Aldrich uses thick materials that protrude from the surface, reminding the viewer that the paintings are not only physical objects in themselves, but also create the illusion of the picture.
