By Pamela Longobardi
Located in New York, NY
24” x 20” Gouache, ink, acrylic and devalued currency collage, signed on reverse by the artist "I utilize the genre of landscape painting to investigate the problematic psychological relationship between humans and the natural world while simultaneously suggesting an interconnected fate. "Weeks 297" Sea Train, Subway Reef Photograph by Stephen Mallon 40"x60" unframed
By Stephen Mallon
Located in New York, NY
C-Print Photograph, edition 3 of 5 - 40"x60" signed and editioned on reverse by the artist. Presented unframed. This photograph documents the creation of artificial reefs along the Atlantic Coast. Stacks of New York City subway cars sit atop a barge at sea. The blue-grey water, shows a white wave cresting in foreground with the lines of subway train cars stacked on top of each other center of the composition. This unusual recycling program created artificial reefs along United States East Coast utilizing the decommissioned NYC subway cars. From 2001 to 2010, the MTA, which runs the city’s subways, re-purposed thousands of decommissioned subway cars by submerging them into the ocean off eastern seaboard states such as New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, and South Carolina. There, the urban relics become artificial reefs, providing safe habitats for marine life. Photographer Stephen Mallon spent two years documenting the project, and his images are now on view at the New York Transit Museum‘s Grand Central Terminal Annex in a new exhibition. In a bold move, the NYC Transit...

Violet Portal 72"X48" Contemporary Abstract Painting
By Debra Drexler
Located in New York, NY
72"x48" acrylic and oil on canvas, signed on reverse by the artist. This is a contemporary abstract painting by the New York/ Hawaiian artist, Debra Drexler. Violet and blue hues are contrasted with neon orange and deep red orange forms. A circular form of violet attracts a central focus in the fields light orange and nearly pastel blue undertones in this stunning vibrant painting by the artist Debra Drexler's paintings are informed both by participating in the contemporary resurgence of abstraction coming out of New York, and by living in the Post Colonial Pacific for close to three decades. In the 21st century, much of our experience is mediated through the screens of our devices. In contrast, the making and viewing of paintings remains a direct, engaging experience in Drexler's paintings. She aims to take us to a state of timelessness that is primal in its humanity, disconnecting us momentarily from the mediated “now” of our electronic devices, and connecting us to a “now” that gives us a glimpse of the infinite. As a colorist, Debra Drexler provokes unexpected color relationships and creates spatial contradictions that come from those interactions. Some of her color choices reference the post digital experience with its highly saturated synthetic color. The luminosity and saturation also mirror the unique quality of light and tropical color interactions in Hawai’i, where Drexler also lives. Her work is driven by an athletic painting...

"Radiator" Optical Art Contemporary Painting with Female Figure
By Emily Roz
Located in New York, NY
"Radiator is an evocative contemporary op art painting, depicting a female nude with bullseyes of color and graphic bursts. Emily Roz incorporates a complex palette of pastel colors with contrasting deep violets, reds and golden yellow oranges. The geometric patterns and forms create illusion and optical effects that distorts the background into multi-levels of angles and planes of color. The female figure's skin tone reflects and seems to radiate the glow from the vibrant red and yellow stripes and concentric circles, which reference op art and a 1970's sensibility. Emily Roz, "Radiator" acryla gouache on paper, 12 x 16 inches, 2020 Emily Roz (b. 1972, New Haven, CT) is a New York based artist. She has had multiple solo exhibitions at Front Room Gallery...

Located in New York, NY
"Suspend" is an evocative contemporary op art painting, depicting a female nude lounging amongst a planar background of optics and geometric visual effects. Referencing op art and a 1970's sensibility, volumizing shaded stripes, polka dots, stripes and radiating lines of color in contrasting angles creates a distorted planar ground that the figure extends across, facing away from the viewer. "Hummingbirds and Honeysuckle", ink and watercolor painting on paper
By Jesse Lambert
Located in New York, NY
78” x 42” ink and watercolor on paper, signed on reverse by the artist, Jesse Lambert. The abstract ground of washes of green, blue, orange and rose tones over white create an active field of color. The imagery of hummingbirds and bird feeders amongst graphic representation of trees, leaves and branches are created with defined black inkwork lines. Pattern and repetition with the vertical tree trunks, are intersected with cross sections of lumber with beautiful wood grain. This large scale painting is featured in "Shelter, Scatter, Feed" a solo show of new works by Jesse Lambert. Front Room Gallery is proud to present a solo exhibition of new works on paper by Jesse Lambert, titled, "Shelter, Scatter, Feed". This is Jesse Lambert’s second solo show at Front Room Gallery. In this exhibition, Lambert continues to explore themes of shelter, safety, and the passing of time. His ink and watercolor paintings on paper depict abandoned scenes in an abstracted rural space. In previous works, Lambert combined the spaces of domesticity and the natural world, with an occasional appearance of the human figure. His new work contemplates the new reality under COVID-19, and continues to evoke the universal need for shelter and protection. In these paintings Lambert imagines the world abandoned by human inhabitants, reclaimed by nature- as if the world has moved on, without us. In this series,
Lambert’s familiar color washes have taken on a more natural hue. Lambert presents a grouping of medium sized paintings which explore the theme of birdhouses as a metaphor for human needs. The birdhouses are falling apart or incomplete, dysfunctional structures failing to meet their stated function. In his larger paintings, remnants of built structures of unknown use are scattered across a forested setting. Strips or planks of wood are nailed to tree trunks. A broken ladder promises ascent, but falls apart. Fragments of wood and string hint at former use, yet all vestiges of functionality have disappeared. Abandoned bird feeders swing precariously. Within the chaos of darting birds, falling leaves and flowers, and remnants of built space, a pattern almost emerges. These paintings emote a feeling of webbed interconnectedness that reveals the beauty of decayed things, and an allure of the poignancy of impermanence. In a series of smaller black and white drawings...

Contemporary Abstract Painting, "Verdant Shield" (w/ green, turquoise, blue
By Debra Drexler
Located in New York, NY
"Verdant Shield" is an apt titled for this green toned abstract painting by Debra Drexler. Blues and turquoise create vertical fields of color atop an atmospheric background of pinks and light blue to create an immersive dimensional depth. Debra Drexler maintains studios in both New York and Oahu, and her work is informed by her unique bi-coastal experience. In her luminous, large-scale abstract paintings, she brings the transcendent experience of the Hawaiian landscape to a New York audience. Through her New York based studio and curatorial practices, she is also deeply engaged in critical conversation surrounding new abstraction. She states “Abstraction takes us to a state of timelessness that is primal in its humanity, disconnecting us momentarily from the mediated “now” of our electronic devices, and connecting us to a “now” that gives us a glimpse of the infinite. While our insistent digital projections can take us away from both our animal and spiritual nature, abstract painting reminds us again of what it means to be human. The corporality of the paint mirrors the flesh of the body and transports us into the timeless.” Debra Drexler's paintings are informed both by participating in the contemporary resurgence of abstraction coming out of New York, and by living in the Post Colonial Pacific for close to three decades. "Symbiosis" Contemporary Large Scale Abstract Painting 60"x48"
By Debra Drexler
Located in New York, NY
60"x 48" acrylic on canvas, signed on reverse by the artist. This is a contemporary abstract painting by the New York/ Hawaiian artist, Debra Drexler. Turquoise and violet raspberry colored forms reminiscent of Matisse cut outs, curl in a textural ground of brushed and poured paint. Drexler's process of composed shapes and fields of color are created with brushwork, poured glazes and and textural depth. This immersive and expressive painting is created with vibrant colors, which react beautifully with each other to create a rhythm of forms that is meditative and contemplative. Debra Drexler's paintings are informed both by participating in the contemporary resurgence of abstraction coming out of New York, and by living in the Post Colonial Pacific for close to three decades. In the 21st century, much of our experience is mediated through the screens of our devices. "Blimpie" Wayne Hills Mall, Wayne, NJ (Modern Ruins) color photograph
By Phillip Buehler
Located in New York, NY
limited edition of 5, signed on reverse by the artist, Phillip Buehler. Flooded hallways and abandoned kiosks are all that remains of the shops at Wayne Hill's Mall. This photograph depicts the once active Blimpie's sandwich shop. It's famous logo and neon sign still intact in the dilapidated mall. This photograph is a featured in a solo exhibition of Phillip Buehler's photographs, entitled: “Mallrat to Snapchat: The End of the Third Place.” Front Room Gallery is proud to present “Mallrat to Snapchat: The End of the Third Place,” on view November 29th - January 12th. January recent work by photographer Phillip Buehler documenting the death of the Wayne Hills Mall in Wayne, New Jersey. This is Buehler’s second solo show at Front Room Gallery. Buehler’s exhibition is part photography, part installation, part cultural critique, mixed in with nostalgia and genuine affection for this very American economical and sociological experiment— The Mall. Buehler takes a very intimate look at the beginning, and possibly ending, of mall culture in the United States featuring not only photographs, but also artifacts from the mall and its opening year, 1973. Under a photograph of a desolate Sam Goody will be a bin filled with almost 100 albums from that year, that visitors can flip through and play in the gallery on a vintage record player. Buehler’s photos of iconic hangouts and lowbrow teenage meeting places ring out from the 1970’s, 80’s, and 90’s but are torn away from their movie soundtracks and sent into an apocalyptic icy future. Featuring Sam Goody, Waldenbooks, Toys R Us...
