This pair of modernist low tables designed by Wolfgang Hoffmann for Howell were made circa 1938 and are in excellent almost original condition. The chrome is completely original and has almost no pitting or discoloration. The lacquer appears to be from the 1960s and we have had it polished out to maximize its shine and luster and is in good order as well. The tables retain original Howell labels to the underside. Wolfgang Hoffmann is the son of Joseph Hoffmann. Born in Vienna and trained to be working under his father's staff he married and moved for his early carrier to New York. His wife and he opened a design studio to create interior furniture and design for the modernist movement and was featured in House and Garden in 1929 with his custom furniture designs. In 1932 he was asked to contribute to the design and color scheme of the Chicago Worlds Fair as well as design the furniture and layout of the exhibits lumber industry house. This heavy and impressive crystal art object made mid-1950s is cast and then carved and engraved. The considerable amount of technical skill required shows a master at his craft. The hand created first then set with the globe second and after cooling the engraved longitude and latitude lines, continents and islands engraved creating the whole. Unsigned but completely worked by hand the piece is simple and dramatic without being overwhelming. It shows a considerable amount of wear on the ground smooth pontil but otherwise is in perfect condition.

On the heels of WW II, the U S Government saw the need to have modern ships that could be easily converted to troop transport ships in wartime constructed with safety and speed as the top priorities. They worked in partnership with the United States Line and underwrote a great deal of the liner's finished cost of 72 million as well as the future operating and maintenance cost of this proud symbol of her country and her age. The designer of the ship William Francis Gibbs had to incorporate the requirements of the government into his designs for the great liner. From her knife-edge bow across the superstructure and a pair of massive blue white and red raked funnels to the perfect arc of her stern, she sat proudly in the water and conveyed a sense of movement and speed even when still.
