Finding My Way 3 , Oil on Panel, 30 x 30, Abstract, "THREE I's", Texas Artist
Located in Houston, TX
Finding My Way 3 Cheryl D. McClure oil on wood panel 30 x 30 x 2 Inv #: 821 Price $3,300 To make my paintings I have come to the realization that I use what I call the ‘Three I’s” of INFLUENCES, INTUITION. and INTENT. Like a lot of artists, McClure’s interest in art developed early in childhood. She recalls, “When I was eight years old, I begged my dad to let me take an after-school painting class. I was shocked when I got there and found out they were painting with paint by number kits. I did not want to do that. I hate coloring inside the lines. So, the teacher allowed me to look for images to use as inspiration. In my memory, I think the first one must have been a reproduction of a Cezanne landscape. I just did what I did all on my own, but I loved mixing colors. Then my dad died, and we moved from Oklahoma to Texas. Sadly, I never really did anything else until I was in my twenties. I then took up painting again all on my own and trying to learn from other artists demonstrating their painting techniques and taking workshops. I have been painting ever since, more than forty years.” She continues, “For many years I only painted with acrylics or mixed media collage. In 2005, I also started painting with encaustic and have gone back to using oil paint again. I suppose acrylic remains my dominant medium. Mixing it up now and then keeps me on my toes and is a great way to learn. Each medium can teach you certain aspects of painting others do not. Each medium has its strengths and weaknesses depending on what you want to express. You can learn from all. I did not love watercolor because it took too much pre-planning. But I learned a lot about negative shapes and composition. I learned a lot with pastel and charcoal about making marks. By working back and forth with different media, I am growing as a painter.” If I used only intent, I would more than likely be disappointed because my imagined intent is always elusive. I get more than I imagined by not setting too many rules about how to get there. Using all of these factors, I can use the knowledge of formal issues that comes from viewing a lot of art and, also, from being in the studio making art all of the time. Using that comprehension of formal design as an aid to intuitively know what is the right relationship of color, mark, space, etc. is the intent. Intention is necessary to direct you to explore the former two. Intention also demands you delve more into your own reasons for making art. 2020 University of Texas, College of Pharmacy Partnership Exhibit, Tyler, TX Beauty of Art and Medicine IV, Rogers Nursing and Health Sciences Building, Tyler Junior College, Tyler, TX Stable, Cerulean Gallery, Dallas, TX 2019 Mississippi Art Colony Fall Travel Show, juror, Stanley Kurth Small Works, Gallery Mack, Seattle, WA 2017 Black Tie (optional), Invitational, Adam Peck Gallery, Provincetown, Mass. Encuentro, Monasteries on the slopes of Popocatépetl, Mexico, Oil on canvas,
Located in Houston, TX
Encuentro by Mercedes Ayala is an oil painting most like painted at the Monasteries on the slopes of Popocatépetl. The Monasteries consists of fourteen monasteries built on or near the Popocatépetl volcano in central Mexico in the sixteenth century by members of the Franciscan, Dominican and Augustinian orders. They were a major factor in the Christianization of a large population over a vast territory and in a short period of time. These 14 monasteries cover over 150 miles (242 kilometers) of land southeast of Mexico City; 11 in the state of Morelos and three in Puebla state. It was impossible to photograph but behind the second monk is a third monk and you can barely see the candle. This is an oil on canvas and painted in her studio in Mexico D.F. Excellent Condition Commentary of her work: Desiderio Hernández Xochitiotzin "Emphasizing the light; the inner light of the being where fragile and subtle figures of angelic appearance inhabit magical beings guardians of good, monks or sages, reminiscences that refuse to disappear. Figures that contrast faintly on a background, almost always dominated by suggestive colors of the night space or of the first morning flashes. Mercedes Ayala Gress, Artist of a high sensitivity as befits her to a great family of Artists… Meche as we fraternally call her, is an artist of a magnificent plastic domain and her work has recreated the greatness of our national landscapes and with great affection that of our Tlaxcalteca land, recreating with emotion in those novo Hispanic...

I believe I share with the majority of painters a tremendous love of the abstract stuff of the world that painting addresses: edges, planes, masses, forms, lines, passages, light and shadow. My inspiration for painting comes from direct observation of this “stuff.” The subject for a painting can be anything, but it helps to love the subject and to spend a lot of time with it. Even more important than the choice of subject is to find a relatively quiet, secure, solitary place to work. I have always loved looking out of windows...

Sailing to the Sun, Reflection in the Water, Oil , Abstract Landscape, Nature
Located in Houston, TX
Sailing into the Sun is an abstract landscape painting. It is oil on canvas. It is gallery wrapped so there is no need for a frame. On a summer morning in 1993 a 22 years old young came to Florida from a small old town in the central area of Cuba called Santa Clara. In his bag, he brought no more than two valuable things, his worn-out brushes and a great dream. The dream to one day become a professional artist in this new land that welcomed him with open arms. Captivated by his love for the beauty of the Landscapes, his last works are what he sees even in the most common scenes: the close relationship of life and who we are with the natural world around us that asks us to respect and care for it. Artist Statement: " I like to scrutinize in the simple things, sometimes it is there where the lost painting is waiting to be found by the painter's eyes. The landscape painting gives me the opportunity to establish a close relationship with the natural world and humbly capture on a canvas a little of its beauty listening to its voice that reminds us how valuable we are and how much we should love it". Giea, Oil Painting Realism, Alla Prima, History Flows Into the Present, Figures
Located in Houston, TX

Giea reexamines portraits of individuals throughout history to illustrate the premise that history flows into the present in an ever-changing state. And, with each new context, we view people and events through a contemporary lens specific to that moment. Giea appropriates and contextualizes original portrait elements to create reinvented portraits using technique and patterning that brings a contemporary context and perspective to these historically inspired portraits. My current body of work, Contemporary Histories, explores this phenomena by re-interpreting historical portraiture using a contemporary visual language. It is my intent to create a modern visual lens through which to view these individuals and their legacies, as they continue to flow into the present in ever-changing states. As a keen example of how history changes and morphs over time, I have selected portraits of women who chose an alternate path from the traditional ones prescribed in their times. Some of these individuals overtly stepped outside the traditional roles prescribed for women to realize their goals. Others astutely maneuvered within the social system they lived in to obtain their aspirations. Whether altruistic or nefarious, these women and their actions altered the future cultural landscape. Through a 21st century lens, we view them as women with minds of their own, who made choices to control their own lives and futures. Often, in stark contrast to how they were viewed and how their actions were recorded in their own times. For a modern visual language, a combination of fine and decorative arts has inspired my approach to this subject. Employing several formal contemporary tenets, most notably, rather than place the figure in a 3-dimensional space, as in the originals, the figures reside in flat graphic picture planes of damask designs, repetitive patterns or botanical grounds as modern settings for their modern legacies. These graphic backgrounds symbolize what was historically considered a woman’s proper domain, in particular, gardening and needle crafts, such as; quilting, embroidery and sewing. Formally, unlike the originals, I am working alla prima, rather than with a base grisaille and delicate layers of glazing. While, the patterned and botanical environments, along with gold leaf applications, contemporary compositions and color palettes are formally influenced by a spectrum of 19th - 21st century artists and artisans; from Gustav Klimt and the Wiener Werkstatte to Henri Rousseau, Tamara de Lempicka and Will Cotton.
