Antique French Brass Hunting Horn, "Le Cor de Chasse", Early 1900s
Located in Dallas, TX
An ancestor of modern orchestral horns, this le cor de chasse, or hunting horn, would have been carried by a member of a fox or stag hunting party known as the huntsman. Unlike orchestral horns, this brass version is valveless, relying on the skill of the huntsman to manipulate pitch through delicate adjustments of the lips. By varying the frequency of notes, as well as the pitch and duration, the huntsman would produce different signals to alert members of the hunting party or to relay commands to the hounds. Horns such as these (cor à plusieurs tours) that feature distinctive tight coils and a soldered mouthpiece were designed to be played with one hand while on horseback. Our French brass hunting horn...

Antique French 2-Piece Cast Iron Dolphin Fountain, Circa 1900
Located in Dallas, TX
Dating to circa 1900, this French dolphin fountain consists of two pieces of cast iron that have developed a wonderful oxidized and verdigris patina. The vertical dolphin has a rising tail that intertwines around a bouquet of typha (commonly referred to as cattail or bulrush). Designed to be affixed to a wall, the downward-facing dolphin has an open mouth, allowing water to fill the scalloped shell basin below. The basin has a height of five and a quarter inches, with an existing drainage hole. Both items are highly detailed, from scales of the dolphin to the striations of the shell. The iron has developed a greenish-brown patina with traces of orange oxidation, resulting in exposure to the elements. Our two-piece cast iron dolphin...

Early 1900s Regence Style Bleached Oak Partners Desk from France
Located in Dallas, TX
As a transitional age in French history, the Regence period is known for furniture that showcases forms of the preceding period (Louis XIV), as well as early Louis XV stylings. In the case of this bleached oak partner’s desk, the motifs are prefigures of the Rococo style of Louis XV, while still maintaining the rectilinear form often seen with Louis XIV furnishings. Hand-carved in France in the early 1900s, the oak wood has been bleached more recently, resulting in a warm, golden brown hue with some fascinating wood grains. A cavetto molding graces the top on all sides, even in the slightly recessed areas above the leg holes. Both sides of the desk have been carved identically, with three belt drawers featuring arabesque margents with foliate shells and thin molding. Similar vertical carvings flank the doors, which are rectangular panels adorned with geometric and foliate motifs. Both doors to the right of the leg hole open to reveal three pull-out drawers, while the doors to the left front three shelves. The rectilinear form is softened by eight short cabriole legs, each with a paw foot pad, beneath a sinuous apron embellished with a foliate shell medallion over thin molding. Our well-carved partner’s desk...

Hexagonal Garden Jardiniere or Fountain Element from Aix-en-Provence, 20th C.
Located in Dallas, TX
Hailing from Aix-en-Provence in the South of France and dating to the 1900s, this fountain element was cast in four sections. The soft cream-color has developed a mottled patina of brown, black, and gray on the basin, while the angular column has significantly less speckling. A hexagonal basin with slender and protruding quarter-round edges sits on top of a similarly shaped column, also adorned with thinly projected moldings and a beveled base. Inside the bowl is an elevated platform, carved with a removable door, making it ideal for housing a pump for a fountain or water jet. The platform and door can be removed, allowing the hexagonal basin to be utilized as an elevated planter...

Antique Italian Oil on Canvas, The Wood Carver's Apprentice, Giovanni Torriglia
By Giovanni Battista Torriglia
Located in Dallas, TX
A fascinating oil on canvas painting depicting a group of monks in a wood carving studio, this oil on canvas was painted by Giovanni Torriglia in the late 1800s. The darkened tones used by Torriglia (black and brown) are offset by a gilt frame with foliate details above a deep cavetto molding. Five monks are gathered around a workbench inside a workshop covered in shadows. One of the young monks, who is wearing glasses, is manipulating a sheer green fabric across the only light source: a shuttered window behind our quintet. Two senior clergymen sit behind the workbench on slatted Savonarola chairs. They gaze with delight at a junior monk hammering a chisel into wood, sculpting a winged angel. A final youthful monk leans on a wonderfully carved sgabello chair, watching the apprentice closely. The colors are splendid, accentuated by tiny nuances such as the wood chips on the floor, various completed sculptures behind the monks, and a green-leafed tree visible outside the window. Giovanni Battista Torriglia...

Weathered White Painted Belgian Cement Unicorn, Circa 1960
Located in Dallas, TX
Cast in Belgium, circa 1960, this cement unicorn features a fabulously weathered white-painted finish. Acceptable losses to the paint have revealed areas of the gray-colored stone, which have developed a black and green patination. The unicorn is depicted in a lodged manner, which is a heraldry term for a domesticated animal lying down with its head raised. A long, flowing mane runs down the nape of the neck, partially covering a bejeweled choker harness. In Europe, unicorns have been part of folklore for over 2,000 years, with people believing they existed up until the late Middle Ages. Legends stated that unicorns were impossible to capture but that their horns contained magical medicinal properties. Eventually, they came to symbolize strength and protection. Our painted Belgian...

Antique French Carved Stone Fountain Facade from Paris, Circa 1900
Located in Dallas, TX
A stylized depiction of the first appearance of the Greek goddess, Aphrodite, this fountain façade was hand-carved in limestone in Paris. Although there are several theories about the creation of Aphrodite, one of the most common legends is that she mysteriously arose from the Mediterranean Sea, either near Cyprus or the Greek Island of Kythira. Carved in mid-relief, the face of Aphrodite can be seen encircled by various seashells as if she were emerging from the water. Above her head is another large shell, flanked by a pair of volutes that comprise the double-arched top of the stone. Aphrodite’s mouth has been carved agape, with an opening of ¾ of an inch, allowing the façade to be paired with a basin for a cascading water fountain...

Large French Landscape Painting of a Hunter and Hillside Village, Dated 1962
Located in Dallas, TX
Purchased from a chateau in the South of France, this large landscape painting of a hunter walking outside of a hillside village is over 10 feet tall and seven feet wide. The canvas is signed and dated in the lower right-hand corner, indicating that the artist completed the massive painting in 1962. Based on the apparel of the hunter and the condition of the surrounding vegetation, it appears to be an early autumn day. Our hunter is walking through a forest clearing with his dog, possibly an Irish Setter with a long, ruddy coat. The man is clad in a green fedora and similarly colored pants with black knee-high boots and an olive jacket...

A French Nature Morte, 20th Century
By Nicolas Desportes
Located in Dallas, TX
The brilliant colors of this French nature morte are quite impressive, allowing the imagery to be seen crystal clear. Oil enhancements have been applied to this 20th-century transferred image to evoke similarities to the painting that it is after, which is currently housed in Le Louvre Museum in Paris. Our version is incredibly well-done and true to the Alexandre François Desportes original, which is entitled Game, Fruit, Flowers, and a Dog (1712). A variety of felled game (a rabbit and six birds) and a hunting rifle are displayed next to a stone fountain with a mythical creature mascaron water feature. The gadrooned basin is not filled with water, but rather a woven basket of blueberries next to a cluster of fruits including peaches and cherries (there is also a blue and white ceramic bowl full of peaches on a stone to the right of the fountain). Vibrant flowers in a wicker basket sit atop the thickly molded entablature of the cream-colored fountain. A pink rose bush grows on one side of the fountain, opposite from large, verdant bushes that obscure most of the blue sky. Laying beneath the fountain basin is a white hunting dog with black markings on its ears and face. Desportes was born in 1661 in Champigneulle, in northern France, later studying in Paris with the Flemish painter, Bernaerts. Initially, Desportes was a well-respected portrait painter, living in Poland during his mid-thirties to paint aristocrats such as King John III Sobieski. Upon the king’s death, Desportes returned to Paris and switched his focus to painting animals and floral arrangements. Both Louis XIV and Louis XIV commissioned Desportes to paint portraits of their favorite hunting dogs. Desportes would often join the kings on royal hunts, where he would travel with a notebook for still life sketches...
