"Sur la rivière (Marne)" - On the River Marne - Hand Colored Lithograph
Located in Soquel, CA
"Sur la rivière (Marne)" - On the River Marne - Hand Colored Lithograph Serene depiction of a house along the Marne River by unknown artist "Charlot." This piece was commissioned and printed by Camilla Lucas Publishing in New York. A two-story house with a red roof sits on the bank of the river. Lush trees line the banks, some of which are depicted with orange-brown leaves, indicating that autumn has arrived. The color in this piece was added by hand. Titled "Sur la riviere (Marne)" in the lower left corner. Signed "Charlot" in the lower right corner. Presented in a wood frame with a double mat. Frame size: 20"W x 16"W Image size: 11.5"H x 9"W In 1928, Hungarian-born Sidney Zoltan Lucas founded "Camilla Lucas Publishing" which encompassed a wholesale art publishing house and a retail art gallery. This business was both wholesale and retail and dealt in reproductions of antique, modern, and contemporary prints. It also sold original art including etchings, lithographs, and paintings. Starting in the 1930's and continuing into the 1950's, Sydney Lucas traveled to Europe periodically and contracted with French and Flemish artists to publish their work under the banner of the "Paris Etching Society." During his career, Sydney published many thousands of images. He brought art into the homes of people at all levels of income through his etchings, serigraphs, woodblock prints, restrikes and reproductions. The various subjects included Redouté and Prevost Flowers, Barraband and Gould Birds, Piranesi, French Landscapes, Urban Scenes, Women, Children, Animals, Hunting and much more. Later on in the 1950s, Sydney and his wife Phyllis Lucas became the first North American publishers of original signed, limited edition lithographs by the famous surrealist artist Salvador Dali. They worked directly with Mr. Dali over several years and the three created such fine images that in 1985 the Lucas’ Collection of limited edition lithographs from Salvador Dali’s paintings were displayed alongside his original paintings at the Salvador Dali Museum...

Located in Soquel, CA
"Fisherman's Wharf - San Francisco" Multi Layer Screen Print on Paper - Signed Rare and bold Screen Print (Silk Screen) of Fisherman's Wharf 1957 by Gordon Cope (American, 1906-1999). Several boats are docked at Fisherman's Wharf, with buildings directly behind them. In the distance, the hills of San Francisco can be seen meeting a pale blue sky. Of particular note is the skillful representation of the reflections of the boats in the water, and the clever use of grey paper as negative space. Numbered and titled in pencil in the lower left corner "22/100 Fisherman's Wharf - San Francisco" Hand signed and dated in pencil in the lower right corner "Gordon Cope 1957" Titled, signed, and dated "in plate" Presented in a silver colored frame with a double mat. Frame size: 22.5"H x 27"W Image size: 15"H x 20"W Gordon N. Cope (American, 1906-1999) was an educator and painter. Trained in Utah and France, he exhibited his landscape paintings and portraits in the United States and Europe, and he believed music was related to painting. Cope was born on May 14, 1906, in Salt Lake City. He was trained by Utahn artists LeConte Stewart and Lawrence Squires, and at the Académie Julian in Paris, France in 1928. He also studied singing at the Opéra-Comique. Cope taught art at Latter-day Saints University, and he served as the chair of its Department of Art in 1930–1931. He taught at the Mountain School of Art from 1932 to 1938, and he was the director of the Art Barn School in Salt Lake City in 1939–1941. Cope painted Utahn landscapes as well as a portrait of Henry H. Blood, who served as the seventh governor of Utah from 1933 to 1941. Cope exhibited his work in the United States and Europe. According to the Deseret News, Cope "felt that music and painting are closely interrelated, and that the study of one form may be used to complement the appreciation and understanding of the other." Cope died on June 10, 1999, in San Francisco, California. Gordon Nicholson Cope studied with well-known Utah artists A.B. Wright and LeConte Stewart, and became recognized as a major Utah artist of the Great Depression. Cope was born in Salt Lake City in 1906 and spent much of his life in Utah. Cope gained much of his artistic training from diverse environments and influences. Following his training with the previously mentioned artists, Cope spent the next year, 1924, working with Lawrence Squires in Arizona. To expand his knowledge and training, Cope traveled to Europe, where he studied the "old masters" such as Da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael. From 1924 to 1928, Cope studied in England, France, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, Holland, and worked for a year at the Acadamie Julian, where many early Utah artists...

Seated Nude Woman American Impressionist School 1940s by Fred Yost
Located in Soquel, CA
Seated Nude Woman American Figurative School 1940s Mid-century American impressionist painting of a woman by American artist Frederick "Fred" Yost (American/Swiss, 1888-1968). He studied: at Mt. Union Col., Alliance, OH; American Students League, New York, and with Homer Boss, John Sloan, Robert Henri, R. Lahey. The painting gleans much form his studies with John Sloan and Robert Henri in the French post-impressionist style. Image 24"H x 18"W Frame, 30"H x 24"W x 1.5"D Signed "Yost" lower right Painter, lithographer, teacher, lecturer About Fred's life: by Hal Fry of the Herald “Fred Does Whatever He Likes” was a title given to a biography written about Fred Yost by Hal Fry of the Herald. The following is taken directly from this column: “Fred Yost’s living style is like his painting style. He has fun with it. Fred John Yost was born in Switzerland, he’ sure, on November 6, 1889, he thinks. His father John brought the family to his country when Fred was about a year old—first to New York and later to Canton, Sebring and finally Alliance, where Yost Sr. loaded freight for a railroad. Fred like drawing and painting so far back he can’t remember how or when it started—it was always that way. But through the public schools in Alliance he didn’t think of this as a career possibility. He wanted to be a newspaperman. He worked his way through Mt. Union College, finishing, he thinks, about 1912. Then he beat it for New York and after kicking around for a time got a job as a proofreader for the Wall Street Journal. He combined this and art school until World War I took him into the Army. In infantry, field artillery and ordnance duties he served with the 27th New York Division through St. Mihiel and the Argonne and the rest—in the process getting his hearing clobbered by blasts from his outfit’s own guns. Coming out a Sergeant in 1919, he went back to the Wall Street Journal briefly—then caught on as a staff artist for the (New York) Herald. For several years, when he felt like it, Yost would take a bus to the Mexican border and switch to a Mexican bus to carry him way down south, then make it any way he could to the places he wanted to see. On these trips he virtually becomes a peon, disappearing totally from those who know him—living with, like and clearly thoroughly liked by the people among whom he moves.” Yost was a graduate of the Art Students League and past president of the Ohio Watercolor Society. William Fisher (1891 - 1985) William Fisher was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1891. He studied at the Brooklyn Institute of Art and Science and at Pratt Institute. Following service as an ambulance driver in WWI, he remained in Europe after the war and studied painting in Rome, Italy for one year. Upon his return from Rome, to New Jersey, he pursued his painting and began to teach small art classes. In the 1920's Fisher became a successful illustrator. His work appeared in Saturday Evening Post, Mc Calls, Harpers and other popular magazines. He later did pen and ink sketches for the Villager, a weekly Greenwich Village newspaper. Microfilmed pages of the Villager are preserved in New York University's Washington Square Library. His sketches also appeared on the cover of the Gotham Guide, which was sold Fridays at news stands in Manhattan. In partnership with Margaret Kilburn, an artist and crafts person, Fisher opened an art gallery and school at 33 West 8th St in NYC during the 1930s. They also opened a summer art gallery and school in 1949 in Kennebunkport, Maine, which ran for many years, and, after the NY gallery closed (around 1952), they made a full time commitment to living and working in Kennebunkport, Maine. Fisher was the recipient of over 100 awards. His work was widely exhibited in Philadelphia, Pa., Montclair, Trenton, and Newark, NJ, the Currier Gallery in New Hampshire and the Brick Store Museum in Kennebunk, Maine. William Fisher and Margaret Kilburn were familiar and beloved figures in Kennebunkport. They taught generations of local children, and they participated in numerous exhibits with other artists, both in the Kennebunkport area and throughout Maine. Mr Fisher always insisted on marching in the local Memorial Day parade, until he was well in his 90's, because he didn't want to ride in a car provided for older veterans. Many homes in the Kennebunks have his works, including members of the Bush family, and they were purchased by numerous out of state and Canadian summer visitors. There are several examples of his works in the Kennebunkport Town Offices and in local churches. Fisher loved to paint "big" canvases, usually local Maine scenes...
