REGENCY STYLE GILT AND FAUX-PORPHYRY IRON ATHENIENNE JARDINIERRE
Early 20th century, likely designed to be used as a jardinierre
Item # 407MYK10M
Unusual and eye-catching, this bold Regency-style athenienne is cleverly designed entirely out of iron, the surface of which has been decorated with parcel gilding, a baked enamel that simulates pophyry marble and polychromed uprights. The vessel has drainage points in the bottom that insinuate it was designed to be used as a jardinierre. This is surmounted by gilded lion masks with rings in their mouths over the tripart columnar supports stretched on a triangular mid-tier shelf, the loosely klismo legs swirling and curving outward over gilded animal...

American Still-Life Oil Painting of Apples by Bryant Chapin ca. 1900
By Chapin
Located in Shippensburg, PA
BRYANT CHAPIN
United States, 1859-1927
Still Life of Apples (1900)
Oil on canvas signed lower left “BRYANT CHAPIN / 1900.”
Item # 404PDJ21Q
A vivd scene that captures the essence of nature's bounty through the portrayal of vibrant, freshly picked apples. Unlike many of his contemporaries who preferred lush, naturalistic environments, Bryant Chapin often chose a simpler greenish-brown backdrop, allowing the viewer's attention to be drawn solely to the meticulously rendered apples.
The apples are the focal point of the image, each depicted with their rich red and yellow skins glistening under the warm sunlight. The manner in which Chapin paints them allows them to almost hover above the rustic surface. This characteristic slight elevation of the fruit from the surface is a distinctive feature of Chapin’s style. The background is largely impressionistic with bold chaotic brushstrokes blending earthy tones of greens and browns with subtle textures, an effect that provides a softened contrast to the hyper-realist bright and shiny apples, emphasizing their freshness and natural beauty.
For a similar example on the open market, see a nearly identical painting Chapin painted in 1907 with almost the same stretcher size (10" x 15") which was offered at Bonham's, New York in their May 21, 2008 sale (lot 1003), which achieved $ 5,400 USD.
ARTIST
Bryant Chapin (American, 1859-1927) was a prominent still life artist, born and raised in Fall River, Massachusetts, where he spent his entire life. The early roots of his artistic inclination were likely nurtured by his maternal aunt, Sarah Augusta Borden née Washburn (1841-1911), a pioneering art teacher in Fall River.
Chapin studied under the prominent still-life painter Robert Spear Dunning (1829-1905), a connection evident in his early works which reflect Dunning’s influence. These initial paintings often feature fruit meticulously arranged on highly polished tabletops with elaborate carved edges and reflective surfaces, showcasing Chapin's attention to detail and his delicate rendering of light and texture.
Before fully dedicating himself to art, Chapin pursued careers in engineering and banking. It wasn't until 1888, at the age of twenty-nine, that he established his first studio and committed to his artistic profession. Chapin maintained this studio in Fall River throughout his life. He also briefly taught freehand drawing at the Fall River Evening Drawing School, part of the local public school system.
Chapin’s artistic repertoire included still lifes, landscapes, marine scenes, and occasional portraits. His still life paintings can be categorized into two styles: arrangements of fruit on polished tabletops with intricate moldings and reflections, and outdoor settings where fruit is placed directly on the ground against a vague, greenish-brown background. His outdoor still lifes often feature vibrant berries spilling from rustic, wooden boxes.
Chapin traveled extensively throughout New England and Canada to paint landscapes, and in 1912 and 1913, he ventured abroad in search of new subjects. His Impressionistic landscapes were described as having a "wistful mysticism," making them popular among contemporary audiences. Hezekiah Anthony Dyer...

Pair of French 19th Century Neoclassical Bronze and Red Marble Lamps
Located in Shippensburg, PA
FINE PAIR OF NEOCLASSICAL ORMOLU-MOUNTED ROUGE MARBLE TABLE LAMPS
France, probably Paris, circa third quarter of the 19th century
Item # 404LBP26Q
A magnificent pair of Neoclassical vases converted into lamps, they are designed loosely after the influential vases of Antiquity known as the Medici and Borhese Vases. Those Kraters were executed in marble and have been widely considered the finest and most well-conceived vases of Antiquity. They have been frequently copied and have been the inspiration for many decorative arts, including the present pair.
The original vases feature bas-relief scenes in the Medici vase of a seated Iphigenia beneath a statue of Diana surrounded by Achilles, Ulysses and Agamemnon and in the Borghese vase a scene of drunk Silenius, Dionysus wearing his animal skin garment and Ariadne all together accompanied by a procession of revellers.
The present example departs from antiquity, focusing only on the Bacchic revellers and have repeated this motif across the field of the vase. They carry in their outstretched arms wreathes and long drapes of their garments, several carrying in hand the Thrysus. The chorus of figures is loosely reminiscent to the Borghese Dancers, also known as the Dancing Hours, executed in bas relief in marble...

George III Mahogany Architect’s Desk attr. Gillows of Lancaster circa 1790
Located in Shippensburg, PA
GEORGE III MAHOGANY ARCHITECT'S DESK IN MANNER OF GILLOWS OF LANCASTER
England, circa 1790 with alphabetized rent drawers interior unmarked
Item # 405KYH28Z
This remarkable architect's pedestal desk was almost certainly crafted by Gillows of Lancaster, London circa 1790. It features a rectangular top inlaid with maroon gilt-tooled leather bordered by a molded edge. Below this is situated a full-width frieze drawer which is decorated to appear as two false drawers over pedestals containing three graduated drawers on either side of an open kneehole. The desk stands on a molded plinth base fitted with casters.
The top drawer reveals a sliding gilt-tooled leather writing surface with a central panel that can be lifted on ratchet supports to hold and display documents. This surface slides back to uncover a lower compartment with an open storage area, flanked by three lidded compartments labeled alphabetically within oval reserves. The back of the desk is designed for a tidy appearance, making it suitable for placement in the center of a room, featuring two full-width faux drawers above faux cabinet doors in the pedestals.
While the present example is not marked by Gillows, it is almost without question a product of their workshops and is firmly attributed to their design books. The alphabet inlaid drawers were inspired by designs popularized by Thomas Shearer’s The Cabinet Maker’s London Book of Prices (1788-1803). These were employed in designs published by Gillows, such as the 'bureau writing-table' with a double-ratcheted top made for the Earl of Shrewsbury in 1789 and a writing-table from 1794 (see Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, L. Boynton, ed., 1995, pl. 24 and 41). A similar design appears in the firm’s 1798 Estimate Sketch Book (p.1481), preserved in the Westminster City Library. The drawer design is further seen on pedestal desks stamped by Gillows, including the library table provided by the firm in 1778 to Denton Hall (see C. Gilbert, The Life and Works of Thomas Chippendale, London, 1978, vol.II, p.246, pl.449).
Gillows produced many variations of this desk style, including those with ratcheting tops for standing use, enclosed kneehole designs, various types of pulls, and subtle dimensional adjustments. Examples can be seen well into the George IV period and the influence of this form on later desks by Gillows can be seen as the tastes changed into the second half of the nineteenth century.
Sir Walter Scott acquired a similar desk from Gillows for his Edinburgh house in Castle Street in 1810, later moving it to his study at Abbotsford in 1826. In a letter to J.B. Morritt of Rokeby Hall, Yorkshire, dated May 1810, Scott wrote: ‘You know I fell in love with your Library table and now the The Lady [The Lady of the Lake] has put crowns into my purse I would willingly treat myself unto the like...’ On 9 August, Scott wrote again to Morritt: 'I must not omit to tell you that Gillows table has arrived and gives great satisfaction. Everyone that sees it likes it so much I dare say I shall have some commissions to send him. His bill did not much exceed yours being about £30 ready money’. The Gillow archives from 1810 record: ‘pack for W.Scott Esq., Castle Street, Edinburgh, case containing mahogany bureau writing table Double Elevating tops cupboard in center complete writing drawers’. (See C. Wainwright, The Romantic Interior, Fig 162 & 163).

JOHN WARRINGTON WOOD
British, 1839-1886
Bust of a Woman, almost certainly depicting Lady Layard (1870)
Carrara marble signed to the reverse "WARRINGTON WOOD SCULPT ROMA 1870"
Item # 405UGP17Q
A very finely carved marble bust that almost certainly depicts Lady Layard (British, 1843-1912) at 27 years of age. While the bust is not titled, John Warrington Wood had a relationship with the family, first sculpting Lady Mary Enid Evelyn Layard's husband and cousin Henry Austin Layard the year before in London in 1869. Wood exhibited that bust at the Royal Academy in 1870 and the same year Lady Layard would have sat down with him in Rome for the completion of this bust. Interestingly, Henry Layard decided he did not like the bust that was completed of him and eventually re-commissioned Wood to complete the bust again 12 years later in 1881, that example held in the permanent collection of The National Gallery in London. The same year, John Warrington Wood executed a second bust of Lady Layard that is held in the permanent collection of the British Museum of Art (acc. no. OA.10557). It is interesting to view the painting completed by Vicente Palmaroli y González...

Rare American Western Sculpture “Desert Rat” (1928) by J. Clinton Shepherd
Located in Shippensburg, PA
J. CLINTON SHEPHERD
United States, 1888-1975
"The Desert Rat" (1928)
Patinated bronze signed "(c) 1928 J. CLINTON SHEPHERD", cold stamped "GORHAM CO FOUNDERS QGCB"
Item # 405KOB04A
An exceedingly rare cast of J. Clinton Shepherd's study of a Western miner and his pack mule titled "The Desert Rat", it features a tired old-timer with his worn and weathered features trodding along with his pickaxe resting on top of the full pack and a sturdy walking stick in his other hand. The sheer rarity of the cast perhaps is due to the timing of his model, which was modeled in 1928 and started production at Gorham almost in sync with the beginning of the Great Depression. Shepherd saw his income from sculpture dwindle to such a degree that he was forced to begin illustrating thriller novels during the 1930s. The only other model we have seen on the open market was offered at Christie's in New York on November 30th of 1990 (lot 86) with an estimate of $ 10-15,000. An example of this sculpture is recorded in the Smithsonian American Art Museum index of American Art as being preserved in the permanent collection of the University of Delaware (acc. no. 64.2.007); it is also held in the Birmingham Museum of Art (acc. no. 1978.41).
Joy Clinton Shepherd was born on September 11, 1888, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Charles and Emma Shepherd. He was the third of five children, and his family lived on Twenty-third Street. His father, a men's suit salesman, enabled Joy to attend college after high school. Joy studied at the University of Missouri at Kansas City before leaving in 1909 to travel to the Northwest with his brother, where they lived with the Crow Indians and learned their customs.
In 1910, Joy moved to Chicago and enrolled at the Art Institute of Chicago where he graduated in 1914. He subsequently studied at the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design and afterwards worked as a freelance artist. He married Gail English, a fellow art student, in 1915. In 1916, he joined the Illinois National Reserve as a bugler. Despite a hearing defect, he served until 1919 when he moved to New York City to work as a freelance artist for magazines like Colliers and The Saturday Evening Post.
Joy adopted the signature "J. C. Shepherd" and found success throughout the 1920s. He and Gail moved to Westport, Connecticut, and had two children, Joy and Charles. In addition to illustration, he pursued a career as a sculptor of western bronzes.
The Great Depression shifted his work to pulp magazine covers...

Located in Shippensburg, PA
LOUIS XVI STYLE PARQUETRY-INLAID ORMOLU MOUNTED ONE-DOOR ARMOIRE
Paris, France circa 1880 lock stamped "B & P Paris", back of one mount stamped "L.P."
Item # 403BDA14P
This exquisite Louis XVI style armoire is a picture of the high precision cabinetwork the French ébénistes of the 19th century were capable of producing. Crafted in Paris in the last years of the 19th century, the cabinet is finished on the top with an original marble top shaped to conform to the cabinet profile. This is raised by a thin crown of egg-and-dart molding over a repeating greek-key border executed in solid brass.
The front door is a brilliant display of parquetry inlay work, an extraordinarily complicated arrangement that comes together flawlessly: the kingwood veneer ground is set diagonally while being bookmatched down the center to create symmetry - a form that is more fully developed in the sides of the case where these diagonal veneers are set into rectilinear and square panels for greater effect. This surrounds a rosewood and stringer-inlaid border encasing a latticework of rosewood astragals over squared lighter hue woods. The application of the veneers is so convincingly executed - note the curves of the rosewood inlays where the grain of the wood twists to create spirals that appear to layer upon one another. In the center of the door is a large ormolu mount of a Neoclassical urn with bacchus masks on either side raised over a pierced footer embellished by foliage.
This door opens using only a key, as there is no knob or pull hardware to allow access to the space. The interior is a very spacious and simple arrangement that allows clothing to be hung while valuables and smalls are stored in the cupboard at the top. No keys are presently available for the door or the interior cupboard, but if locking the armoire is important than having keys fabricated is never terribly difficult and can be done by our shop upon request.
The lock is marked on the inside by the fabricator "B & P Paris", while one fo the rosette mounts on the corners of the cabinet is marked "L.P."
A magnificent example of Parisian craftsmanship from the late 19th century, this is a very fine armoire of ideal dimensions for both function and aesthetically. Unlike so many armoires and wardrobes...
